Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Calvi is a tender port: ships anchor in the bay and land passengers at Quai Landry, at the edge of the lower town. Everything central is on foot: the citadel entrance is 500–700 m away and free, and the beach starts about 5 minutes from the port. Be at the tender pier 105 minutes before all-aboard.

Calvi has no cruise terminal, so the day starts with a tender into the marina. The Genoese citadel stands on its rock above the landing, a long sand beach runs east from the port, and the coastal train heads along the Balagne shore to L'Île-Rousse. The two things that catch people out are the steep cobbles up to the citadel and a train that runs about every two hours. Recent listed calls here are mostly small ships.

Where the ship docks

  • Quai Landry tender landing (marina) · 0 km to the centre

Tenders land at the edge of the lower town. Citadel entrance 500–700 m; beach about 1 km to the main stretch; railway station about 8 minutes' walk.

Can you walk? Yes, about 10 min. The lower town and marina are mostly flat. The citadel entrance is 500–700 m from the landing, then the route climbs steep, uneven cobbles. The beach starts about 5 minutes from the port.

Tender: Calvi has no cruise port facilities (Cunard). Ships normally anchor in the bay and tender passengers to the marina at Quai Landry, at the edge of the lower town (CruiseMapper). Wind and sea can affect tender operations, so leave a margin before the last boat. A very small ship may be sent to the commercial port instead: a 2013 local report had the 207-passenger Seabourn Pride due to moor there. Check your daily programme.

Getting to town

On foot

FreeAbout 10 min to the citadel entrance; about 5 min to the start of the beach

Follow the marina to reach the citadel at one end and the beach at the other. The climb into the citadel is the only hard part.

Balagne train to L'Île-Rousse (Tramway de la Balagne, operated by Chemins de fer de la Corse)

€6 one way, 3 sections; €12 return (2026)40–45 min

The 31 August–1 November 2026 timetable has six trains a day each way, leaving Calvi at 08:00, 10:00, 12:35, 14:25, 16:30 and 18:30, and leaving L'Île-Rousse at 09:00, 11:00, 13:30, 15:20, 17:30 and 19:20. The 2 November 2026–3 January 2027 timetable is much thinner, with several trains not running at weekends. Timetables change by season, so check cf-corse.corsica/horaires for your date.

Balagne train to beach halts

From €2 for one section; up to €6 (2026)Santa Restituta 13–15 min; Lumiu L'Arinella 14–17 min; Botri 35–41 min

The same train stops at beach halts along the coast. Some halts are request stops, so signal the driver. Calvi station is open daily and takes cash and cards; it lists hours from at least 06:30 to 20:00.

Taxi

Agree or confirm the fare firstL'Île-Rousse is about 25 min by road

Useful for Notre-Dame de la Serra, which has a car park at the top, and as a backup if a train is missed.

When to head back

Be at the Quai Landry tender pier 105 minutes before all-aboard (15:45 for a 17:30 all-aboard), so you are on board 90 minutes before. Leave the citadel 120 minutes before and the beach 130 minutes before. If you take the train, it must reach Calvi at least 150 minutes before all-aboard (by 15:00 for 17:30), so leave L'Île-Rousse at least 195 minutes before.

The train is the main risk: trains are about two hours apart, so one delay or a missed departure can cost two hours. In the 31 August–1 November 2026 timetable, the 13:30 from L'Île-Rousse (arrives 14:10) is the last safe train for a 17:30 all-aboard; the 15:20 arrives at 16:00, which is too late. From the citadel, allow 15 minutes on the cobbles down to the pier. Wind can also slow tender operations.

If you are running late: If you miss a train at L'Île-Rousse or a beach halt, take a taxi to Calvi; L'Île-Rousse is about 25 minutes by road. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Where people go wrong: Taking a late Balagne train back from L'Île-Rousse, when trains are about two hours apart and the tender queue still lies ahead.

Calvi is one day. Time the whole cruise.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Skip the ship tour for the citadel, lower town and beach: all are on foot from the tender. L'Île-Rousse is easy by train if your call is long enough. A ship tour earns its price for the inland Balagne villages or the Scandola reserve, where an independent return is harder to control. On a short call, stay in Calvi.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the Balagne train as a frequent shuttle.

Trains are about two hours apart. Choose your return train before you leave Calvi, and keep the next-earlier one in mind.

  • Taking the last train that seems to fit.

The train must reach Calvi at least 150 minutes before all-aboard. On the autumn 2026 timetable that meant the 13:30 from L'Île-Rousse for a 17:30 all-aboard.

  • Waiting at a beach halt without signalling.

Some halts are request stops. Signal the driver clearly as the train approaches.

  • Climbing to the citadel in beach shoes.

The cobbles are steep and uneven. Wear shoes with grip.

  • Booking a Scandola boat trip on a normal call.

It is a half-day boat excursion from Quai Landry. Do it only as a ship tour or on a very long call.

  • Using a timetable from another season.

Check cf-corse.corsica/horaires for your date. The timetable changed on 2 November 2026 and many trains were dropped.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Calvi is a small town and the main risks are practical: falls on the citadel cobbles, heat, and summer wildfires. The UK Foreign Office lists Corsica among the highest-risk areas for wildfires, and causing a fire, even accidentally, is illegal. Do not smoke in the maquis or pine forest, and obey any closures. Swim at supervised beaches where you can, and learn the flags. Arinella has no lifeguards. If you see a fire call 112 or 18. Pickpockets are a national issue in crowded tourist spots, so keep valuables separate. Emergency number: 112.
Scams to know
  • Distraction theft: the UK Foreign Office warns that pickpockets in France may work in gangs, with one distracting you while another goes into your bag. This is national advice; no Calvi-specific scam was found.
Accessibility
Tender boarding depends on the swell, so ask the ship in advance whether wheelchair users can transfer. The lower town and marina are mostly flat. The citadel is reached over steep, uneven cobbles, so expect it to be hard going with a wheelchair. Calvi beach is rated for reduced-mobility access, with a beach mat, a beach wheelchair and accessible toilets; call the lifeguard station on 04 95 65 13 19 or the Calvi Nautique Club on 04 95 65 10 65. At Arinella, floating wheelchairs and mats are held at Restaurant Le Matahari, though there are steps to the beach.
If it rains
Rain makes the citadel cobbles slippery, so go slowly or stay low. MUDACC is free and under cover at the citadel entrance. Otherwise use the cafés and shops of the lower town. If a storm is forecast, skip forest and clifftop walks, and expect wind to affect the tenders.
Crowds
Cruise calls are modest: 45 were planned for 2022, and CruiseMapper's late-April 2027 listing shows three small ships on three separate days. Summer crowds come more from holidaymakers: beach parking fills quickly and popular coves get busy in high summer. Go up to the citadel first thing and keep the beach for after lunch.

Calvi cruise port FAQ

Is Calvi a tender port?

Yes. Calvi has no cruise port facilities, so ships normally anchor in the bay and tender passengers to Quai Landry. Very small ships may occasionally use the commercial port.

Is Calvi walkable from the cruise port?

Yes. The tenders land at the edge of the lower town. The citadel entrance is 500–700 m away, then a steep cobbled climb. The beach starts about 5 minutes away.

Is the Calvi citadel free?

Yes. Entry is free and open all day, all year. An adult audioguide costs €8 (2026).

Can I take the train from Calvi to L'Île-Rousse on a cruise day?

Yes on a long call. It takes 40–45 minutes and costs €6 one way or €12 return (2026). Trains are about two hours apart, so the train back must reach Calvi at least 150 minutes before all-aboard.

Beaches near Calvi cruise port?

Calvi beach starts about 5 minutes' walk from the port and runs for nearly 4 km. Sainte-Restitude and Arinella are a 13–17 minute train ride away.

What can I do in Calvi in one day from a cruise ship?

The citadel in the morning, lunch on the harbour, then a swim at Calvi beach. On a long call, take the train to L'Île-Rousse instead of the beach.

How early should I be back at the Calvi tender pier?

Be there 105 minutes before all-aboard, so you are on board 90 minutes before. Leave more margin in windy weather.

Is Calvi safe?

Yes. Take care on the citadel cobbles, in the heat and with summer wildfire rules.

Not yet confirmed

  • No published 2026 cruise cap or rule specific to Calvi was found. Corsica's executive announced a 15% cut in calls for summer 2023; whether anything further applies in 2026 was not confirmed.
  • A tourist-office page reports a closure of the Calvi–L'Île-Rousse shuttle 'from 13 November until further notice' with no year. The official 2 November 2026–3 January 2027 timetable shows no closure, so this appears out of date, but it was not confirmed.
  • Tender ride length at Calvi: no reliable figure found.
  • April–August 2026 Balagne timetables were not opened; only the two autumn 2026 ones were.
  • Taxi fare from Calvi to L'Île-Rousse: only a third-party estimate was found.
