Quick answer: Villefranche is a tender port: ships anchor in the bay and tenders land at Port de la Santé, a few minutes' walk from the old town. Nice is 7–10 minutes and Monaco 15–20 minutes by train from Villefranche station, about 10 minutes' walk from the tender quay. Be back at the tender quay 90 minutes before all-aboard, and 120 minutes before if your day includes a train or bus.
Villefranche-sur-Mer sits on a bay between Nice and Cap Ferrat, and big ships anchor offshore and send passengers ashore by tender. The landing, Port de la Santé, is a small harbour north of the citadel run directly by the Alpes-Maritimes departmental council, and it handles more than 200,000 cruise passengers a year. The old town, the Cocteau chapel and the citadel are all on foot from the quay; Nice and Monaco are short train rides. Since a prefectoral order of 9 December 2025, Villefranche takes only one ship of more than 1,300 passengers a day, an average of 2,000 cruise passengers a day (3,000 on some calls), and no more than 15 calls a month in July and August.

Port de la Santé tender landing · 0.2 km to the centre
Small harbour north of the citadel, managed by the Alpes-Maritimes departmental council. The old town and waterfront are a few minutes' walk away, uphill in places. Villefranche station is about 600 m away, roughly 10 minutes on foot along the Promenade des Marinières, with stairs and a short climb. The Octroi bus stop (lines 15 and 600) is about 7 minutes' walk.
Can you walk? Yes, about 5 min. The old town and harbour front are a few minutes from the tender landing, and the Rue Obscure is a few steps up from the port. The village is built on a slope, so expect stairs and steep lanes. The station and Plage des Marinières are about 10 minutes' walk.
Tender: Ships anchor in the bay and tenders land at Port de la Santé, at the western end of the village below the citadel. The tender ride takes about 10–15 minutes. The landing has a small terminal with a tourist information desk and toilets, and taxis wait outside. Queues for the tenders back to the ship can build in the afternoon, so return early.

Stops at Octroi in Villefranche, about 7 minutes' walk from the port. It runs along the coast to Nice and to Monaco and Menton. Lignes d'Azur tickets are accepted for Nice–Monaco trips that do not enter Monaco. Traffic on the coast road makes the bus less predictable than the train.
Bus 15 (Lignes d'Azur) to Nice
€1.70 Lignes d'Azur ticket (2026)About 25–30 minutes to Nice port
Runs from the Octroi stop to Nice in one direction and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in the other. Cheaper than the train but slower on busy cruise days.
Èze village
Bus fare or taxiNot confirmed
Èze is about five miles from the pier. By public transport, bus 83 runs from Beaulieu-sur-Mer via Èze-sur-Mer station up to the village, and lines 82 and 602 run from Nice. Times were not confirmed for this guide, so a taxi or a ship tour is the safer choice on a short call. The last part of the village is reached by steps.
Taxi
MeteredAbout 15–20 min to Nice, 30–40 min to Monaco, depending on traffic
Taxis wait outside the tender terminal, and the village rank is on Place Amélie Pollonnais (+33 4 93 55 55 55). Availability can be short on busy days.
When to head back
Be back at the tender quay at Port de la Santé 90 minutes before all-aboard if you stay in Villefranche. If your day includes a train or bus to Nice or Monaco, be back at the quay 120 minutes before all-aboard.
Tender queues build in the afternoon. From Nice-Ville, take a train that leaves at least 140 minutes before all-aboard; from Monaco station, at least 150 minutes before. From Villefranche station, allow about 10 minutes on foot, with stairs, back to the quay.
If you are running late: If trains are disrupted, take a taxi straight to Port de la Santé, or bus 600 to the Octroi stop. If you will miss the last tender, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.
Where people go wrong: Arriving at Port de la Santé just before the last tender, when afternoon queues are longest.

On your own or a ship excursion?
Nice and Monaco are easy on your own by train, so neither needs a tour. A ship tour is worth it for Èze, where bus connections are awkward and the village sits high above the coast, and for combined Èze–Monaco or Saint-Paul-de-Vence days that are hard to time on public transport around tenders.
| What | Ship | On your own | Saving |

Common mistakes
Leaving the return to the last tender.
Afternoon queues build at Port de la Santé. Be at the quay 90 minutes before all-aboard, or 120 if you went to Nice or Monaco.
Relying on the coast-road bus to get back.
Bus 600 and bus 15 are slowed by traffic on cruise days. Use the train for the return and keep the bus as a backup.
Underestimating the walk from the station.
The 10-minute route from Villefranche station to the quay has stairs and a climb. Allow for it with bags or a pushchair.
Planning the Cocteau chapel on a Monday or Tuesday.
It opens Wednesday to Sunday only and closes at lunchtime and from mid-November to mid-December.
Trying to fit Èze, Monaco and Nice into one day by bus.
Pick one or two, or take a ship tour for Èze.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- Villefranche itself is small and calm. In Nice, Monaco and on trains and at stations, the UK Foreign Office warns that pickpockets work in gangs, with one distracting you while another goes into your bag. Carry your bag across your body, keep cards and passport apart, and stay alert around tourist sights and cash machines. The lanes in the old town are steep and stepped, and the walk to the station has stairs. Emergency number: 112.
- Scams to know
- Distraction thefts by pickpocket teams on trains, at stations and around tourist sights, where one person distracts you while another takes from your bag.
- Accessibility
- Tender transfers depend on sea state, and wheelchair users should check with the ship whether tenders can take them on the day. The harbour front is fairly level, but the old town is built on a slope with steps and steep lanes, the walk to the station includes stairs, and Èze is reached by steps. Taxis wait at the tender terminal.
- If it rains
- See the Cocteau chapel and the Volti museum in the citadel, then take the train to Nice or Monaco, which have more indoor options. Rough seas can delay or stop tenders, so stay close to the quay if the weather turns.
- Crowds
- Villefranche receives more than 200,000 cruise passengers a year and the old town can be busy several times a week from April to October. Since the prefectoral order of 9 December 2025, only one ship of more than 1,300 passengers may call per day and summer calls are capped at 15 a month in July and August. Go ashore early, and use the train rather than the coast-road bus on busy days.
Fees and rules for visitors
A mayoral decree capping ships at 450 passengers in Nice and 2,500 in Villefranche was suspended by the Nice administrative court, which ruled the mayor lacked the power.
Would have been: 450 passengers (Nice), 2,500 (Villefranche)
Decree of 9 July 2025; suspended 13 July 2025
