Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Savona is a docked port: ships berth at the Palacrociere and the centre is about 350 m away on foot, over a small bridge, so you need no transport for the town. Trains from Savona station reach Genoa in 28–60 minutes and Finale Ligure in about 13–20, but the station is a 20–30 minute walk from the port. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard from town, or 90 minutes if you took a train.

Savona is Costa's main home port and also a good port of call, because the cruise terminal sits right beside the old harbour. The town is a working Ligurian city rather than a resort, with a compact medieval centre, a Genoese fortress at the water's edge and a chapel built by Pope Sixtus IV. This guide treats it as a port day. If you are starting or ending your cruise here, follow your cruise documents instead. The main decision is whether to stay in town or take a train along the coast, and the walk to the station is what catches people out.

When to leave Savona

Times include the way back
  • Old town and DarsenaOn foot over the small bridge, 5–10 min 16:20
  • Fornaci beachTaxi, about 2 km 16:15
  • Savona stationOn foot, 20–30 min, or taxi 10–15 min 15:30
  • Finale Ligure MarinaTrain, about 13–20 min, then 30 min walk 15:10

Times are port time, the time your phone shows ashore.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Palacrociere Terminal 1 (West) · 0.35 km to the centre

The main terminal building, opened in 2003 and run by Costa. It has lifts, escalators and boarding bridges. The address on cruise documents is Via Antonio Gramsci 14 or Calata delle Vele, Darsena nuova.

  • Palacrociere Terminal 2 (East) · 0.35 km to the centre

Opened in 2014 and joined to Terminal 1 by a 21 m bridge. The two quays are Calata delle Vele (450 m, two berths, 11 m of water) and Don Genta (325 m, one berth), so three ships can berth at once. Other quays in the port are used occasionally, so check your ship's berth.

Can you walk? Yes, about 5 min. Walk over the small bridge to the old harbour. The route is level and wheelchair friendly. Torre Leon Pancaldo is 5 minutes away, Torre del Brandale and the museums about 7, and the Priamar about 9. The railway station is the exception, at 20–30 minutes.

Getting to town

On foot to the old town

Free5–10 min

Leave the terminal, cross the small bridge and you are at the Darsena (old harbour). The centre is compact and the half-day route through the main sights covers about 2 km.

On foot to Savona station

Free20–30 min

The station is at Piazza Aldo Moro. Walk mainly along Via Paleocapa, passing Piazza Mameli. Allow the full 30 minutes when planning a return train.

Shuttle bus to the station (TPL Linea)

Paid on board; ask the driverCheck at the terminal

TPL Linea runs shuttles from the Palacrociere for Costa guests, including to Savona station and other nearby places, but only if requested by the terminal operator. It does not run on every call. Ask at the terminal on arrival, and do not depend on it for the way back.

Taxi to the station

Fare not verified; agree it first10–15 min

Taxis use the covered area at the terminal. Agree the fare first and use licensed taxis only.

Train to Genoa (Trenitalia)

Fare not verified; check Trenitalia28 min fastest; most take 42–60 min

Around 46 trains a day to Genova Piazza Principe, all direct. Validate paper tickets before boarding.

Train to Finale Ligure Marina (Trenitalia)

About €5 one way on regional trains (2026)About 13–20 min

Around 23 direct trains a day. From Finale Ligure Marina station, buses run to Finalborgo, Varigotti and Malpasso beach.

Bus or train to Noli

Check on board or at a kioskCheck the timetable

Noli has no railway station of its own. TPL Linea buses run from Savona station and Piazza Mameli to Bergeggi and Noli (line 38). Italy's tourist board also gives the route by train to Finale Ligure Marina and then Line 40. Buy tickets at kiosks: they cost more from the driver.

Taxi to Finalborgo

Fare not verified; agree it firstAbout 22 min

The train is the better choice. Use a taxi only if you are short of time or have missed a connection.

When to head back

From town, leave 70 minutes before all-aboard and be back on board 60 minutes before: 16:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard. If you take a train, be back on board 90 minutes before: 16:00.

The walk from the station takes up to 30 minutes, so your train needs to reach Savona by 15:30 on a 17:30 all-aboard. Leave Genoa by 14:30 and Finale Ligure Marina by 15:10. Start back from Fornaci 75 minutes before. Keep one earlier train as a spare in case of delays.

If you are running late: From Savona station take a taxi to the Palacrociere, 10–15 minutes. If you are stuck further along the coast or will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Where people go wrong: Assuming the railway station is beside the terminal, when it is a 20–30 minute walk.

Savona is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Skip the ship tour for Savona itself: the sights start a few minutes from the gangway. Costa has run a 3.5-hour guided walk with food tastings, which suits you if you want the tastings arranged. A ship tour is worth it for a big day in Genoa if you want no train risk, because a late regional train is the main way to miss the ship here. Finale Ligure is easy enough to do alone on a long call. For Noli, check the return bus first: we could not verify its times.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the railway station is next to the terminal.

It is a 20–30 minute walk. Build that into both directions, or take a taxi.

  • Relying on the shuttle bus to get back from the station.

It runs only when requested by the terminal operator. Plan the return on foot or by taxi.

  • Trying to fit Genoa into a short call.

With up to an hour each way plus the station walk, it needs at least 8 hours in port. Leave Genoa by 14:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard.

  • Turning up at the museums on a Tuesday to Thursday.

Those days are not on the listed hours, and the Cappella Sistina is a weekend listing. Check before you plan around them.

  • Booking the Le Officine parking shuttle or whale watching for a port day.

The Le Officine shuttle is for parking, not sightseeing. Whale watching from Savona takes about 4.5 hours and needs advance booking.

  • Not validating a paper train ticket.

Stamp it in the machines near the platforms before boarding. Inspectors can fine you on the spot.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Savona is an ordinary Italian city with low overall crime, though UK travel advice says to watch your belongings on public transport and at tourist sites. Take care in the station area and on trains, as you would anywhere in Italy. Carry photo ID, because police can ask for it at any time. Pedestrians can be fined for crossing within 100 metres of a crossing without using it, so use the marked crossings on the main roads. Emergency number: 112.
Scams to know
  • Distraction theft: UK travel advice warns of thieves in Italy working in pairs or groups at tourist sites and on transport. This is Italy-wide advice, not specific to Savona.
  • Unlicensed taxis: Italy-wide advice is to use only licensed taxis with a roof sign and company details. Agree the fare first.
Accessibility
The Palacrociere has lifts, and the small bridge to the old harbour is described as wheelchair friendly. The old town is compact, and the route to the Darsena is level. The Le Officine parking shuttle buses have no wheelchair ramps, so do not assume that TPL shuttles have them either. The Priamar is on a low hill, so ask at the entrance what can be reached. Ask your cruise line about assistance at least 48 hours ahead.
If it rains
The Museo della Ceramica and Pinacoteca are the obvious choices, on a combined ticket, and the Archaeological Museum at the Priamar is another indoor option. The cathedral is close by. Check the opening days first.
Crowds
The terminal can handle more than 12,000 passengers a day, and three ships can berth at once. Only about a third of passengers were in transit in 2016, so much of the crowd at the terminal is embarking or disembarking rather than sightseeing. Check the ship schedule for your date, leave early and come back early. Sunday is quiet, as most shops close, though bars and restaurants stay open.
