Ashore from 08:15, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Ships berth alongside at the Dique quay in the Port of Motril, about 2.5 km from the town centre; there is no cruise terminal building, and shuttle buses carry passengers into Motril. Granada and the Alhambra are 45–60 minutes away by road, or 50–75 minutes on the ALSA bus from Motril. If you go to Granada on your own, leave the Alhambra at least 3 h 45 min before all-aboard by public transport, or leave Granada at least 2 h 30 min before by taxi or private car.

Motril is a working cargo, fishing and ferry port on the Costa Tropical, and most cruise passengers use it as the door to Granada. The Alhambra is the reason to come, but it needs a pre-booked, named ticket with a fixed time for the Nasrid Palaces, and the round trip by road takes up a big part of a port day. The alternative is a slow day in Motril itself: an old centre with a 16th-century church and sugar-cane heritage, fish restaurants on Playa de Poniente, and Salobreña's hilltop old town a short taxi ride west. Calls have grown fast, with 68 ship calls expected in 2026, and Norwegian Dawn calls weekly in summer.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Muelle Dique (Dique quay) · 2.5 km to the centre

Cruise ships including the 326 m Norwegian Getaway have berthed here. There is no cruise terminal yet: a large terminal project was dropped and a smaller passenger services building on the bulk quay is only at application stage (2026). Distance to town is quoted as 2.5 km by the regional tourist board and about 4 km by other guides, depending on where in town you measure to.

Can you walk? No. The berth sits inside a working cargo port and the town is 2.5–4 km away by road. Use the shuttle bus, which on busy days runs a fleet of eight to ten buses.

Getting to town

Port shuttle bus to Motril centre

Free on recent calls; confirm on your daily programme (2026)Short ride, 2.5–4 km

The port and Motril council set up a free town shuttle for cruise passengers, and eight to ten shuttle buses ran on big-ship days in 2024. It goes to the commercial and historic centre. Check the last shuttle time before you leave the ship.

ALSA bus Motril–Granada

Check the fare on alsa.com before travelling (2026)About 50–75 min

ALSA runs frequent direct buses between Motril and Granada bus station, with the fastest taking about 50 minutes. Granada bus station is outside the centre: take city bus 33 to Catedral, then the C30 minibus up to the Alhambra, about 35 minutes in all. Check the return timetable before you set off and pick a bus with slack.

Granada city bus and Alhambra minibus

€1.60 single, paid to the driver (2026)C30 about every 12 min

The C30 runs from Calle Pavaneras by Plaza Isabel la Católica up to the Alhambra; the C32 links the Alhambra and the Albaicín about every 10 minutes. A ticket allows a change of line within one hour.

Ship excursion or pre-booked private transfer to Granada

Varies; check your cruise planner (2026)45–60 min each way by road

A motorway links the coast and Granada. The ship's tour waits for its own coaches, which removes the timetable risk on the way back.

When to head back

From Motril centre, be on a shuttle back 75 minutes before all-aboard. From Granada by public transport, leave the Alhambra 3 h 45 min (225 minutes) before all-aboard; by taxi or private car, leave Granada 2 h 30 min (150 minutes) before.

The Granada return chains three legs: Alhambra minibus and city bus to the bus station (about 35 minutes), the ALSA bus to Motril (50–75 minutes), and a taxi or shuttle to the berth. A missed connection at any point costs time, and summer traffic on the coast road adds more. Aim to be back on board 90 minutes before all-aboard.

If you are running late: If an ALSA bus is full or late, take a taxi from Granada straight to the Port of Motril (45–60 minutes). Call the port agent number on your daily programme as soon as you think you may be late.

Where people go wrong: Going to Granada without a pre-booked, named Alhambra ticket with an early enough Nasrid Palaces slot.

On your own or a ship excursion?

For the Alhambra, the ship's tour is worth considering here. Tickets are named, have a fixed Nasrid Palaces time, sell out weeks ahead, and cannot be changed, and the DIY route needs three connections each way. A ship tour holds the tickets and guarantees the return. Go independently only on a long call, with tickets already booked and the ALSA return timetable checked. For Motril, the beach or Salobreña, you do not need a tour.

Common mistakes

  • Turning up in Granada hoping to buy Alhambra tickets on the day.

Book on the official site, ideally a month ahead. Tickets sell out and cannot be changed or refunded.

  • Booking the Nasrid Palaces slot too late in the day.

Choose a slot around 11:00–11:30 so you can leave the Alhambra by 13:45 for a 17:30 all-aboard.

  • Leaving the passport on the ship.

Alhambra tickets are named; bring the ID whose number you gave when booking.

  • Assuming Granada's bus station is next to the Alhambra.

It is outside the centre. Allow about 35 minutes by bus 33 and the C30 minibus each way.

  • Buying cheap Alhambra tickets from a reseller.

Only the official Alhambra ticket site sells the €21–22.27 ticket. Cheaper offers may cover only the gardens or nothing at all.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Motril and Granada are generally safe. Inside the cargo port, follow the marked route and use the shuttle instead of walking among lorries and port machinery. In Granada watch your bags on crowded minibuses and around the Alhambra and Albaicín viewpoints. Summer heat inland is strong; carry water and shade for the Alhambra gardens. Emergency number: 112.
Scams to know
  • Unofficial Alhambra ticket sites: sites offering tickets below the official price may sell only gardens access, an expensive tour or nothing at all. Buy only on the official Alhambra ticket site.
  • 'Guided tours' around €30 that include nothing more than the standard entry ticket, or only the audioguide the official site provides free.
Accessibility
Ships berth alongside, so no tender transfer is needed. Ask the ship whether the shuttle buses are accessible before you leave. In Granada, the Alhambra minibuses are small and the Alhambra itself has long distances, slopes and some steps; parts of the Nasrid Palaces and Generalife are uneven. The Albaicín is steep and cobbled. Motril's centre and the Playa de Poniente promenade are flatter options.
If it rains
Rain does not close the Alhambra, but the gardens and Alcazaba walls are exposed, so bring waterproofs. In Motril, the sugar-cane museum at Casa de la Palma, the Encarnación church and a long lunch in town make a short wet-weather day.
Crowds
The Alhambra controls numbers with fixed Nasrid Palaces slots, so the main crowd risk is not getting a ticket at all. Book early. In Motril, the first shuttles fill with everyone heading to town; ship tours leave first, so independent passengers can take a later shuttle without a queue. On big-ship days several thousand passengers share eight to ten shuttles.
