Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Most ships dock at Costa Morena, a working port 3–5 km from the centre, so you need a ride: a cruise line shuttle to Piazza Cairoli if yours offers one, or a taxi of about €10–15. Lecce is about 30 minutes away by regional train from Brindisi station. Leave the centre 80 minutes before all-aboard, and allow 90 minutes on board if you return by train.

Brindisi is a ferry and cargo port at the heel of Italy, and an MSC homeport since 2015. Its town centre has the Roman column that marks the end of the Via Appia, a seafront promenade and a cathedral, and it fills two or three hours on foot. Many passengers use it as a base for Lecce, Ostuni or the trulli of Alberobello. The main thing to get right is where your ship is: Costa Morena is not walkable, while a small ship at the inner harbour can land close to the centre.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Costa Morena (Costa Morena Est, cruise terminal) · 5 km to the centre

The main cruise and ferry area. Published distances to the centre run from 3 km to 5 km, and the road transfer takes 15–20 minutes. Since June 2025 Bari-Brindisi Cruise Terminal, an MSC company, has held a 10-year concession for the passenger facilities here. The berths stay public. The road entrance is the Varco Seno di Levante on Via Spalato.

  • Stazione Marittima / Banchina Carbonifera (inner harbour) · 0.2 km to the centre

Used on some calls, depending on the ship. MedCruise lists it 200 m from the centre and 1 km from the railway station.

  • Sant'Apollinare (planned)

Not an operating cruise berth in our sources. The June 2025 concession refers to planned berths here and asks MSC for a new terminal project. In October 2026 the port authority's president said work on two new ferry and cruise terminals had been delayed about five years by court orders.

Can you walk? No. Do not plan to walk from Costa Morena: the route through the commercial port is not practical, so follow the passenger access instructions. From the inner-harbour berth the centre is about 200 m away. Inside the centre everything is walkable in 2–3 hours.

Dock or tender: Ships normally dock. MedCruise says anchorage is available and ship tenders are allowed, but this is not the usual arrangement. Check your daily programme.

Getting to town

Cruise line shuttle

Often free; confirm with your line (2025)15–20 min

Many cruise lines run a shuttle to Piazza Cairoli, but it is not guaranteed. Check the drop-off point, any charge and the last return time before you leave the ship.

Taxi

About €10–15 to the centre (2025)10–20 min

Taxis are metered. One passenger reported none at the ship in 2018, so check at the terminal and do not rely on finding one on the way back. Taxis wait at the railway station.

STP bus line AP

€1.00 in advance, €1.50 on board (STP page; timetable file dated 2017)15–20 min from Costa Morena to the town centre

The circular line links the airport, Piazza Crispi (railway station), the via del Mare car park and Costa Morena, about every 30 minutes. STP lists the Costa Morena leg from 08:15 to 20:45 and says it runs daily until 31 October. That date has passed for this season, so confirm the bus is running, the current timetable and that you can reach the stop from your berth.

Regional train to Lecce

From about US$4 one way (Rome2Rio, November 2026)20–30 min

From Brindisi station on Piazza Crispi. Trains run roughly every 20–30 minutes. Lecce station is about 15 minutes' walk from the historic centre. Check the return train before leaving.

Regional train to Ostuni

From €4 one way (Omio, November 2026)About 20 min direct

Omio lists direct Regionale Veloce trains. Ostuni station is outside the town. The local bus runs about hourly and takes 15–27 minutes; a taxi takes about 12 minutes at US$20–25.

Alberobello by private car or tour

Prices vary; compare before bookingAbout 1 hour each way by road

There is no direct train. Public transport takes at least 90 minutes to 2 hours with a change, which is a poor fit for a port day.

When to head back

Leave Brindisi town centre 80 minutes before all-aboard if your ship is at Costa Morena. Aim to be on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 if you return by train.

The Costa Morena transfer takes 15–20 minutes and you may wait for a shuttle or taxi. After a train from Lecce or Ostuni you still need that transfer from the station. Check the time of the last shuttle, and do not count on the very last train of your window.

If you are running late: Taxis wait at Brindisi station. If you may miss all-aboard, ring the port agent number on your daily programme straight away. The Harbour Master (Capitaneria di Porto) is on +39 0831 549111.

Where people go wrong: Assuming the ship berths by the town centre or that a free shuttle runs, when Costa Morena is 3–5 km out through a working port.

Brindisi is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

In March 2024, eight Norwegian Dawn passengers on a private tour came back to the pier in São Tomé more than an hour after all-aboard. Getting back on board took six days, seven countries and over $5,000. The details

Fine, light sand and clear water at the northern edge of Torre Guaceto.

Torre Guaceto

Private car, then a shuttle from the parking area · Further north along the coast · Fare not verified

  • Seafood · Mama – Trattoria di mare, Via Santa Lucia 15, Brindisi
  • Pasticciotto (custard pastry) · Pasticceria Natale, Via Salvatore Trinchese 7, Lecce
  • Pasticciotto with cream and sour cherry · Pasticceria Franchini, Via G. Salvemini 45, Lecce
  • Pasticciotto at the bar · Caffè Alvino, Piazza Sant'Oronzo 30, Lecce

On your own or a ship excursion?

Take a ship tour or a reliable private driver for Alberobello. There is no direct train, and combining it with Ostuni makes a day of about 8 hours. Lecce is easy to do alone by train if you allow for the port transfer. Ostuni works alone on a long call, but the station is outside the town. Skip the tour for Brindisi itself, which is small and walkable once you reach the centre.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the waterfront on the map is where you will get off.

Check your berth. Costa Morena is 3–5 km from the centre, and walking through the port is not practical.

  • Assuming there will be a free shuttle.

Many lines run one, but not all. Confirm it, the drop-off and the last return before you leave the ship.

  • Timing your return from the train arrival alone.

Add 15–20 minutes for the station-to-Costa Morena transfer, plus any wait, and be on board 90 minutes before all-aboard.

  • Taking public transport to Alberobello on a port day.

There is no direct train and journeys take 90 minutes to 2 hours or more each way. Use a tour or private driver.

  • Planning to go inside Castello Svevo.

It is a Navy site and can be seen only from outside. Choose the cathedral or Monumento al Marinaio instead.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
We found no documented crime problem aimed at cruise passengers in Brindisi. Costa Morena is a working port shared with ferries and freight, so stay on the marked passenger routes. Use normal city care with valuables in stations and busy streets. For emergencies dial 112. Emergency number: 112.
Accessibility
Costa Morena is too far to reach without a vehicle, so ask your ship about accessible transfers. The cruise terminal building has about 100 seats, toilets and air conditioning. The Comune lists the Monumento al Marinaio as free of architectural barriers, but another guide says it is reached by stairs, so ring InfoPoint before you go. Old town streets in Lecce and Ostuni have not been verified for wheelchairs, and Ostuni is a hilltop town.
If it rains
Stay in the centre for the cathedral, the Tempietto di San Giovanni al Sepolcro and the Museo Archeologico Provinciale Francesco Ribezzo, which holds Roman finds and the Punta del Serrone bronzes; check its hours first. Lecce is also a good choice, as its churches and the amphitheatre sit close together.
Crowds
We found no evidence of the crowding seen at bigger Italian ports, and the MSC concession forecasts only 84 calls a year at Brindisi by 2030. Ferries also use Costa Morena, so ask about the transfer on heavy ferry days. In Lecce, go early and see the amphitheatre at opening.

Brindisi cruise port FAQ

Is Brindisi walkable from the cruise port?

Not from Costa Morena, which is 3–5 km out through a working port. From the inner-harbour berth the centre is about 200 m away.

Is Brindisi a tender port?

Normally no. Ships dock. MedCruise says tenders are allowed, but it is not the usual arrangement.

How do I get from Brindisi cruise port to the town?

Use your line's shuttle to Piazza Cairoli if offered, a taxi at about €10–15, or the STP AP bus. Allow 15–20 minutes.

Do cruise ships use Sant'Apollinare in Brindisi?

Not in our sources. The berths there are planned, with a cruise terminal project attached to MSC's 2025 concession. Check your ship's berth.

Can I visit Lecce from Brindisi on a cruise day?

Yes. Regional trains take 20–30 minutes, roughly every 20–30 minutes. Leave Lecce's historic centre about 155 minutes before all-aboard if you are docked at Costa Morena.

Can I visit Alberobello from Brindisi on a cruise ship?

Yes, but use a tour or private driver. It is about 1 hour by road and there is no direct train.

What can I do in Brindisi in one day from a cruise ship?

See the Roman Columns, cathedral and seafront, then visit the Monumento al Marinaio or go to Lecce or Ostuni by train.

Beaches near Brindisi cruise port?

Apani is a few km from the city and Punta Penna Grossa is about 13 km away. You need a taxi or driver for both.
