Quick answer: Most cruise ships dock alongside on the inner side of the Rijeka breakwater, in the central harbour; MedCruise puts the terminals a few hundred metres' walk from the historic centre, so you walk to the Korzo. Some ships anchor and tender passengers to the passenger terminal. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, 90 if your ship is at anchor.
Rijeka is Croatia's largest port and a working city rather than a resort, with its Austro-Hungarian centre right behind the harbour. The Port of Rijeka Authority lists berths 32 and 33 on the inner side of the Rijeka breakwater for cruise ships and berth 35 for smaller ones, next to the passenger terminal in the middle of the Rijeka basin. Cruise traffic is growing: the Port Authority recorded 39 berth reservations for 2026 in spring 2025, and the Rijeka Tourist Board announced more than 30 calls for the 2026 season, running to December. The city itself is compact: the Korzo, St Vitus Cathedral and the WWII tunnel are on the flat, and Trsat Castle sits on a hill above, reached by a long stairway or city bus 2. Opatija's seafront is about 35 minutes away by bus 32.

Rijeka breakwater cruise berths (berths 32, 33 and 35) and the maritime passenger terminal
The Port of Rijeka Authority places the passenger terminal in the centre of the Rijeka basin, between the De Franceschi pier and Riva Boduli, and lists berths 32 and 33 on the inner side of the Rijeka breakwater for cruise ships and berth 35 for smaller cruise ships. Riva Boduli (berth 29, 189 m) is also a passenger berth. An outer breakwater berth of up to about 360 m was at planning stage in 2021. MedCruise says the port is in the city centre and the terminals are a few hundred metres' walk from the historic centre.
Can you walk? Yes. The cruise berths and passenger terminal are in the central harbour. MedCruise describes them as a few hundred metres' walk from the historic centre; no official walking time in minutes is published, and the walk from the breakwater berths is longer than from the terminal itself. The Korzo, St Vitus Cathedral, the Rijeka Tunnel, the City Market and the Governor's Palace are all on foot from the harbour. Trsat is 138 m above sea level: walk up the Trsat stairs (561 steps) or take city bus 2.
Dock or tender: Most ships berth alongside. Some ships anchor at the outer anchorage and take passengers by boat to the Rijeka passenger terminal; local press reported this for Mein Schiff 5 in 2022. Check your daily programme, and add 30 minutes to every return time if you are tendering.

Autotrolej city bus 2 to Trsat
Single from the driver from €2.50 (Autotrolej price list, 2026)Not confirmed
Rijeka Tourist Board says line 2 runs from the city centre to Trsat; the nearest stop is at the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat, and the castle is signposted from there. A popular plan is the bus up and the stairs down.
Autotrolej bus 32 to Opatija
Zone fares from the driver €2.50–€4.00 one way (Autotrolej price list, 2026); ask the driver for the Opatija fareAbout 25–30 min Rijeka to Opatija and about 35 min back
Autotrolej's summer timetable (from June 2025) shows about 16 weekday departures each way between 09:00 and 18:00, roughly every 30 to 55 minutes, and about every 55 minutes at weekends. Check the current timetable at the stop, and note the time of the bus you will need back before you leave Rijeka.

When to head back
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 minutes if your ship is at anchor and you need a tender. Start down from Trsat at least 90 minutes before all-aboard. From Opatija, take a bus that leaves at least 150 minutes before all-aboard.
No official walking time from the centre to the breakwater berths is published, so do not cut the return fine. The Trsat stairs are long and steep. Bus 32 from Opatija takes about 35 minutes to Rijeka, buses can be almost an hour apart at weekends, and coast traffic is heavier in summer.
If you are running late: Take a taxi straight to the port. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.
Where people go wrong: Missing a weekend bus back from Opatija, where buses can be almost an hour apart.

On your own or a ship excursion?
Rijeka itself does not need a tour: the centre is compact and the sights are cheap. Trsat is easy by bus 2 or the stairs, and Opatija is a straightforward city bus ride on a full-day call. The ship's tour is worth it for longer trips such as Plitvice Lakes, Rovinj, Krk or Zagreb, which are not practical by public transport on a cruise timetable, and the ship waits for its own tours.
| What | Ship | On your own | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rijeka walking tour (Korzo, St Vitus, market, theatre) | From US$40, about 2 hours (Seabourn) | Free on foot; Rijeka Tunnel €2 and Trsat Castle €3 in summer (2026) | Most of the tour price |
| Trsat Castle and Sanctuary | Varies by line; check your cruise planner | Bus 2 from €2.50 or the stairs, plus €3 castle entry (summer, 2026) | Not calculated |
| Opatija | Varies by line; check your cruise planner | Bus 32 each way, zone fare from the driver | Not calculated |

Common mistakes
Assuming the ship is right on the Korzo.
Breakwater berths are a walk from the centre. Allow extra time and do not cut the return fine.
Climbing the Trsat stairs in the midday heat.
Take bus 2 up and walk the 561 steps down.
Planning the Rijeka Tunnel or Trsat Castle desk on a Sunday.
The tunnel is closed on Sundays and the castle info desk opens Monday to Saturday. Check your call day.
Going to Opatija without checking the bus back.
Weekend buses can be almost an hour apart. Take a bus that leaves Opatija at least 150 minutes before all-aboard.
Forgetting the tender time when the ship is at anchor.
Add 30 minutes to every return and be at the tender pier 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- GOV.UK says crime levels in Croatia are low and violent crime is rare, but pickpockets work in tourist areas, so keep valuables close and do not carry large amounts of cash. The harbour is a working port, so stay on marked walkways near ferries and vehicles. The Trsat stairs are long and steep. Wildfires are common in hot, dry summers; outdoor fires are banned from 1 June to 31 October outside designated areas, and fires should be reported on 112. Emergency number: 112.
- Scams to know
- Overcharging at some 'gentlemen's clubs', sometimes by thousands of euros, with customers threatened if they refuse to pay (GOV.UK).
- Pickpocketing in busy tourist areas (GOV.UK).
- Accessibility
- The harbour front, Korzo and old town centre are mostly flat. Trsat is up a long stairway; wheelchair users and anyone with limited mobility should take a taxi or bus 2 instead. Trsat Castle and the Rijeka Tunnel give free entry to persons with disabilities. If your ship is at anchor, ask the ship about tender access.
- If it rains
- Spend the morning in the Maritime and History Museum at the Governor's Palace, then walk the Rijeka Tunnel and St Vitus Cathedral. Lunch at the market taverns. Skip the Trsat stairs in rain, which make them slippery.
- Crowds
- Rijeka sees far fewer cruise passengers than Dubrovnik or Split, and the centre rarely feels crowded. The busiest times are mornings at the market and the Korzo when a large ship and ferries arrive together. Trsat is quieter in the early afternoon once tours have moved on.
Rijeka cruise port FAQ
Is Rijeka walkable from the cruise port?
Yes. Ships dock in the central harbour, which MedCruise puts a few hundred metres' walk from the historic centre.
Is Rijeka a tender port?
Usually not. Most ships dock at the breakwater berths, but some anchor and tender passengers to the passenger terminal. Check your daily programme.
How do I get from Rijeka cruise port to Trsat Castle?
Walk to the centre and take city bus 2 to the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat, then follow the signs, or climb the 561-step Trsat stairs. Castle entry is €3 in summer (2026).
Can I visit Opatija from Rijeka cruise port?
Yes on a full-day call. Autotrolej bus 32 takes about 25–30 minutes; take a bus back that leaves Opatija at least 150 minutes before all-aboard.
What can I do in Rijeka in one day from a cruise ship?
Walk the Korzo, visit St Vitus Cathedral and the Rijeka Tunnel, go up to Trsat Castle, eat near the City Market and finish at the Governor's Palace museum.
Beaches near Rijeka cruise port?
Rijeka is a port city rather than a beach town. Opatija, about 30 minutes by bus 32, has a long seafront; ask the tourist office on the Korzo for the nearest swimming spots.
Is Rijeka safe?
Yes. GOV.UK says crime levels are low; watch for pickpockets in tourist areas.
