Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Cruise ships dock alongside at berth 15, which the port authority describes as at the gates of the centre; MedCruise puts the centre 500 m from the port, so you walk into town. No shuttle into the city for passengers in transit was confirmed. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, and start down from the Duomo at least 75 minutes before.

Ancona is a working ferry port first and a cruise port second. Cruise ships use berth 15 in the old harbour, which the port authority describes as at the gates of the centre, and the berth is shared in summer with ferry traffic. Trajan's Arch stands on the quay, the Duomo of San Ciriaco sits on Guasco hill above, and Vanvitelli's pentagonal Mole is set in the water nearby. The passenger building at berth 15 is a temporary structure; a new 1,600 m² terminal is planned but was still at feasibility-check stage in January 2026. Ancona had 45 cruise calls scheduled for 2026, with MSC Lirica calling every Friday from 3 April to 23 October; MedCruise gives its regular 2026 Friday call as 14:00 to 20:30.

When to leave Ancona

Times include the way back
  • Historic centre (Santa Maria della Piazza, old harbour)Walk back, about 500 m, through the port gate named in your daily programme; be on board 60 min before all-aboard 16:30
  • Duomo of San Ciriaco (Guasco hill)Walk down the hill to the port gate 16:15
  • Ancona Centrale stationWalk about 15 min to the port (MSC), or take a taxi 16:15

Times are port time, the time your phone shows ashore.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Cruise berth 15 (Banchina Giovanni Da Chio, Molo XXIX Settembre) · 0.5 km to the centre

The port authority describes berth 15 as at the gates of the centre. MedCruise, the Mediterranean cruise ports association, lists the distance from the Port of Ancona to the city centre as 500 m and says the historic centre is a few steps from the cruise terminal. Passenger facilities at berth 15 are temporary; the port authority's new 1,600 m² terminal (about €7.2 million) was still being checked at feasibility stage in January 2026. On MSC Lirica's first 2026 call, disembarking passengers left through a purpose-built gate behind the Banca d'Italia building and walked into town. MSC embarkation guests enter through Gate 2A, following signs for 'Traghetti'; MSC's free shuttle links the Biglietteria Marittima on Via Einaudi with the terminal for embarking and disembarking guests, not the city.

Can you walk? Yes. The berth faces the historic centre. Ancona Tourism says that if you arrive from the port you are already in the centre and can visit it on foot, and MedCruise gives 500 m from the port to the city centre. No official walking time in minutes is published, and the exact route depends on the gate your ship uses. The Duomo is on Guasco hill above the port; MSC calls the walk up a stiff climb from the port area.

Getting to town

On foot

FreeThe centre is about 500 m from the port (MedCruise); no official walking time published

Leave by the gate your ship names in its daily programme and walk into the centre. Santa Maria della Piazza is opposite the port exit; Trajan's Arch and the Clementine Arch are on the old harbour. Wear shoes with grip for the climb to the Duomo.

Walk to Ancona Centrale railway station

FreeAbout 15 min on foot (MSC Cruises)

Only needed if you plan a train trip. Taxis and city buses also link the station and the port.

Conerobus city bus

€1.60 for 60 min or €1.80 for 100 min bought before boarding; €2.00 from the on-board machine; €3.60 from the driver; €5.00 for 24 h (fares from 1 August 2026)Varies

Buy from resellers or online before you board; buying from the driver costs more than double. Validate the ticket when you board. Useful mainly for the Passetto on the far side of the city.

Taxi

MeteredVaries

Useful for the climb to the Duomo or for the Passetto. Check the meter is running; Wikivoyage notes reports of overcharging.

When to head back

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Start down from the Duomo at least 75 minutes before all-aboard, and leave Ancona Centrale station at least 75 minutes before.

No official walking time from the centre to berth 15 is published, so do not cut the return fine. The Duomo is up a steep hill, so allow for the descent. MSC puts the station about 15 minutes on foot from the port. Ancona is a busy ferry port: use the gate named in your daily programme and allow extra time on heavy ferry days.

If you are running late: Take a taxi straight to the port gate. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.

Where people go wrong: Cutting the return fine from the Duomo on Guasco hill or heading to the wrong gate in a busy ferry port.

Ancona is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Ancona's own sights are walkable, so the city needs no tour. Loreto is on the railway south of Ancona, but this guide could not confirm train times or fares from Trenitalia; if you go on your own, check the return train on trenitalia.com before you leave and treat the ship's tour as the safer choice on a short or afternoon-only call. The ship's tour earns its price for the Frasassi Caves, Urbino or the Conero coast, which are awkward by public transport on a cruise timetable.

Common mistakes

  • Underestimating the climb to the Duomo.

Do it first while it is cool, and start down at least 75 minutes before all-aboard.

  • Planning a full day on an afternoon-only call.

MSC Lirica's regular 2026 Friday calls arrive at 14:00. Keep to the old harbour and the Duomo.

  • Waiting for a shuttle into town.

The MSC shuttle on Via Einaudi runs between the ticket office and the terminal. For the city, walk.

  • Buying the bus ticket from the driver.

It costs €3.60 against €1.60 bought beforehand (2026). Buy from a reseller or online.

  • Going to Loreto without checking the return train.

Check times on trenitalia.com before you leave Ancona, or take the ship's tour.

  • Returning to the wrong port gate.

Ancona is a busy ferry port. Use the gate given in your ship's daily programme.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Wikivoyage describes the Marche as one of Italy's safest regions, and the centre is fine to walk. Take care in the port area, which is busy with ferry traffic, lorries and cars in summer, and stay on marked walkways. The road up Guasco hill and the paths in Parco del Cardeto are steep and uneven. Check taxi meters are running. Emergency number: 112.
Scams to know
  • Taxis not running the meter; insist it is switched on or agree the fare first.
Accessibility
The harbour front is fairly level, but Ancona is a hilly city: the Duomo and the Cardeto park involve steep slopes. Wheelchair users should take a taxi up to the Duomo. The Passetto beach has a lift as well as stairs. The Omero museum at the Mole is a tactile museum designed for visitors with sight loss.
If it rains
Visit the Duomo, Santa Maria della Piazza and the Omero museum or any exhibition at the Mole Vanvitelliana, then a long lunch in the centre. Cardeto park paths are unpaved and best skipped in rain.
Crowds
Ancona sees relatively few cruise calls (45 scheduled in 2026), but in summer the old harbour is busy with ferries and berth 15 is shared with ferry passengers. Leave the port promptly after docking and allow extra time to re-enter on busy ferry days. The Duomo is quietest early in the morning.
