Zadar Cruise Port to Old Town: Shuttle, Bus or Taxi
Quick answer: Most ships dock at Gaženica, about 3.5 km south-east of the Old Town. Zadar is not a tender port. Walking takes 40–50 minutes on a hot, exposed road, so most people ride. The cruise-line shuttle or a taxi takes 10–20 minutes. The cheap option is Liburnija bus 9 to the main bus station, then line 2 to the Old Town: €1.59 a ride (2026), about 30–40 minutes including the change, with buses about every 30 minutes. Small ships berth on the Old Town waterfront, and you simply walk off. Head back from the Old Town 90 minutes before all-aboard: 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
Where the cruise ships dock
Zadar is two ports in one. Check which berth your ship uses in the daily programme before you plan the day.
Gaženica passenger terminal. This is the main cruise and ferry port, south-east of the city. It has five berths for international cruise ships and ferries, and the terminal building opened in 2019. It is about 3.5 km from the Old Town. Cruise-line shuttles and Liburnija bus 9 serve the area. Taxis wait outside the terminal.
Old Town waterfront (city port, Poluotok). Only smaller ships and expedition vessels use it. You step off on the edge of the Old Town, and the Roman Forum and the Sea Organ are a few minutes on foot. If your ship berths here, you do not need any transport.
Once you are in the Old Town, everything is flat and compact. It sits on a pedestrian-only peninsula, and the Forum, St Donatus and the Sea Organ are all within about ten minutes of each other.
Cruise-line shuttle
Most lines that use Gaženica run a shuttle to the edge of the Old Town near the Sea Organ.
- ·Cost: set by the cruise line. Some include it in the fare.
- ·Time: 10–20 minutes to the Old Town.
- ·Tickets: usually sold on board.
- ·Gotcha: queues build in the last 90 minutes before all-aboard. Come back early, not at the last minute.
Liburnija bus 9, then line 2
This is the cheapest way in, but it is not direct. There is no bus that runs straight from the port to the Old Town.
- ·Cost: €1.59 per ride, or €2.65 for a two-ride ticket (2026). You need two rides each way.
- ·Time: about 30–40 minutes including the change.
- ·Frequency: about every 30 minutes.
- ·Where to board: buses serve the port area but do not enter the terminal itself, so you walk out to the stop.
- ·How to pay: single tickets can be bought from the driver in cash.
Line 9 links the port with the main bus station (Kolodvor). Line 9A is the variant that runs to the Gaženica ferry port. At the bus station, change to line 2, which serves the Old Town (Poluotok). On the way back, do the same in reverse.
With services about every 30 minutes on each leg, a missed connection costs real time on the way back.
Taxi or ride-hailing
- ·Cost: agree or check the fare before you set off.
- ·Time: about 10 minutes to the Old Town gates.
- ·Where: taxis wait outside the terminal. Uber and Bolt also operate in Zadar.
- ·Gotcha: vehicles cannot enter the Old Town, so you are dropped at the walls.
Some taxis overcharge cruise visitors on this short run. Agree the fare first, insist on the meter, or use Bolt or Uber, which show the price in the app.
Walking from Gaženica
You can walk, but it is not comfortable. It is about 3.5 km and 40–50 minutes along a flat but exposed roadside route with little shade. In summer the heat on this road is real, so carry water if you try it. Most people ride.
Barkajoli rowing boats
Boatmen have rowed passengers across the city harbour between the Old Town and the mainland side for centuries. The crossing takes about 2 minutes, and you pay a small fare on board. It is useful if you find yourself on the mainland side of the harbour. It is not a link to Gaženica.
Options compared
| Option | Cost (2026) | Time to Old Town | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cruise-line shuttle | Set by the line; sometimes included | 10–20 min | Most passengers |
| Bus 9 + line 2 | €1.59 a ride, two rides each way | About 30–40 min with the change | Lowest cost |
| Taxi, Uber or Bolt | Agree or check the fare first | About 10 min | Groups, late returns |
| Walk from Gaženica | Free | 40–50 min | Cool days only |
| Walk from the Old Town berth | Free | A few minutes | Small ships |
When to head back
From the Old Town, be at the shuttle stop, bus stop or taxi rank 90 minutes before all-aboard. The ride to Gaženica takes 10–20 minutes by shuttle or taxi, but shuttle queues lengthen late in the day. The bus needs a change at the bus station, with services about every 30 minutes.
| All-aboard | Leave the Old Town | Back on board by about |
|---|---|---|
| 17:00 | 15:30 | 16:00 |
| 17:30 | 16:00 | 16:30 |
| 18:00 | 16:30 | 17:00 |
That leaves you on board about an hour before all-aboard.
If you are going further afield, leave much earlier. From Krka National Park, about an hour away by road, leave 150 minutes before all-aboard. From Plitvice Lakes, about 2 hours 10 minutes each way, leave the park at least 4 hours before all-aboard. There is no practical public transport to either park that fits a port day, so book a ship excursion or a private driver in advance.
If you are running late: if the shuttle queue is long, take a taxi or call a Bolt or Uber from the Old Town gates. The drive is about 10 minutes. If you are delayed on the road from Krka or Plitvice, call the port agent number in your daily programme straight away.
Common mistakes
- ·Trying to walk from Gaženica to the Old Town. It is about 3.5 km on an exposed roadside route. Take the shuttle, a taxi or the bus.
- ·Waiting for a bus straight to the Old Town from the port. Line 9 goes to the main bus station. Change there to line 2, and allow 30–40 minutes.
- ·Joining the last shuttle queue of the day. Queues build in the final 90 minutes before all-aboard. Leave the Old Town by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard, or take a taxi.
- ·Assuming your ship uses the Old Town berth. Only small ships do. Check the berth in your daily programme before planning to walk.
- ·Paying in your home currency. Independent cash machines and card terminals may offer this. Always choose euros to avoid a poor exchange rate.
Accessibility
The Gaženica terminal is modern and step-free inside. Shuttle and taxi drop-offs are at the walls. The Old Town is flat and car-free, which helps wheelchair users. The main streets are polished limestone that can be slippery, especially Kalelarga when wet, and some side lanes have steps. The Sea Organ is on steps down to the water, but the promenade above it is level and you can hear it from there.
