Bari Cruise Port to Bari Vecchia: Walk, Taxi or Train
Quick answer: Walk. Ships dock at the cruise terminal by the Varco della Vittoria gate, and Bari is not a tender port. Bari Vecchia, the old town, starts at the gate. The Basilica di San Nicola is about 10 minutes on foot (0.8 km) and the Swabian Castle about 15, on flat streets. Entry to the basilica is free and the castle costs €10 (€2 reduced, 2026). You only need a taxi for Bari Centrale station, about 2 km away: roughly 15 minutes by taxi or 25 on foot. From there a regional train reaches Polignano a Mare in 23–28 minutes, from about €3 one way. Be back at the gate 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 if you go to Polignano.
Where the cruise ships dock
Bari has one cruise terminal, the Stazione Marittima, with its entrance at the Varco della Vittoria gate. It is a multi-purpose building of over 3,500 m² beside the historic centre, about 0.8 km from the heart of the old town. It can handle more than one ship, and the cruise berths take ships up to 330 m.
Ferries to Greece and Albania use the same port. Expect lorries and foot traffic at the gate, and use the marked pedestrian routes. A new cruise terminal is planned for 2028; the current building is the one in use in 2026.
Walking to Bari Vecchia
Walking is the right answer for a day in Bari, and it is free. Leave by the Varco della Vittoria gate and the Swabian Castle and the edge of Bari Vecchia are in front of you. Everything in the old town and along the seafront is walkable.
Times from the gate, according to the port:
- ·Basilica di San Nicola: about 10 minutes.
- ·Swabian Castle (Castello Svevo): about 15 minutes. It sits on the edge of the old town by the port, so you can leave it for the end of the day.
- ·Strada Arco Basso: between the castle and the basilica, where women make orecchiette by hand outside their homes. Go in the morning, when they are working.
- ·Cathedral of San Sabino: a few minutes from the basilica.
- ·Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese: the two main squares, on the edge of the seafront.
The old town is flat. The lanes are narrow and paved with polished limestone, which gets slippery when wet, so wear shoes with grip. The basilica opens from 07:00 daily, until 20:30 Monday to Saturday and 22:00 on Sundays.
A good loop: Strada Arco Basso first while the pasta makers are at work, then the basilica and its crypt (about 45 minutes), the cathedral, Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, and the seafront by the Molo San Nicola fish market. Finish at the castle on the way back to the ship.
Taxi
You do not need a taxi for the old town. Taking a ship shuttle or a taxi to Bari Vecchia is one of the common mistakes here: it is a 10-minute walk from the gate.
A taxi earns its place for Bari Centrale station. It is about 2 km from the port, about 15 minutes by taxi. Taxis are metered; check the fare before you set off. A taxi is most useful on the way back from a train, when time matters more than the walk.
Walking or taxi to Bari Centrale
If you are heading to Polignano a Mare, you first need to reach Bari Centrale. You can walk it in about 25 minutes through the Murat district, the 19th-century grid of the new town, along Via Sparano, the main shopping street. Or take a taxi, about 15 minutes.
Wheelchair users going to Polignano should take a taxi to the station.
Regional train to Polignano a Mare
Polignano a Mare is the one trip beyond Bari that works on your own, on a call of 8 hours or more.
- ·Where: Trenitalia regional trains from Bari Centrale to Polignano a Mare station.
- ·Time: 23–28 minutes on regional trains; 17 minutes on the occasional Intercity.
- ·Cost: from about €3 one way, or about €6 return (2026, per Omio).
- ·How to pay: buy the ticket before boarding, and validate paper tickets.
- ·Gotcha: check the return times before you leave Bari.
Polignano's clifftop old town looks over Lama Monachile cove. Skip it on a rainy day, as the viewpoints are exposed.
For Matera and Alberobello, book the ship tour. Matera is about 1 h 36 min each way on the FAL train, usually with a change at Altamura, and the line ran on replacement buses for much of summer 2026. The FSE line to Alberobello also often substitutes buses.

When to head back
The rule in Bari is simple: be back at the gate 60 minutes before all-aboard. From the basilica it is 10 minutes to the gate, so leave 70 minutes before. From the castle, leave 75 minutes before.
From Polignano, be on a train that reaches Bari Centrale at least 2 hours before all-aboard: by 15:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard. Allow 15 minutes by taxi or 25 on foot from the station, plus port security. That puts you on board about 90 minutes before all-aboard. The ship will not wait for independent travellers.
| All-aboard | Leave the basilica by | Leave the castle by | Leave Bari Centrale by | Leave Polignano by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16:30 | 15:20 | 15:15 | 14:30 | 14:00 |
| 17:30 | 16:20 | 16:15 | 15:30 | 15:00 |
| 18:30 | 17:20 | 17:15 | 16:30 | 16:00 |
If a Polignano train is cancelled, take the next train or a taxi straight to the port gate, agreeing the fare first. Call the port agent number in your daily programme as soon as you know you will be late.
You can plan your day with your own all-aboard time.
Common mistakes

- ·Walking to Bari Centrale at the last minute. It is 2 km from the port. Take a taxi on the way back and plan to land at Bari Centrale 2 hours before all-aboard.
- ·Trying to do Matera independently on a normal port day. Two train legs of about 1 h 36 min each, usually with a change, and frequent replacement buses. Book the ship tour.
