Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Trondheim is a docking port. Ships berth at Brattøra, usually Quay 68, and you can walk the flat route to the Torvet square in 15–20 minutes or to Nidaros Cathedral in 25–30 minutes. A bus costs NOK 50 in the app (2026), but most people do not need one. Leave the cathedral 90 minutes before all-aboard, and allow for a longer walk if your ship uses Ila Quay 30.

Trondheim is one of the easier Norwegian ports to do alone. The city is compact and flat, and the main sights are on foot from the ship. Three things catch people out. There is no real terminal, only a temporary information stand. The berth can change, because Quay 30 at Ila is used when two ships are in. And Nidaros Cathedral keeps short hours outside summer, so check them first. The port expected about 80 calls in 2026 and sets its own limit of 9,000 cruise passengers a day.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Quay 68, cruise quay (Turistskipskaia), Brattøra · 1.5 km to the centre

Main berth. Quay length 96 m and 13 m deep, taking ships up to 360 m, including Queen Mary 2 and MSC Meraviglia. No terminal building. Rockheim is about 200 m away. Shore power and a longer quay are planned by January 2028.

  • Quay 1 (Pir 1), Brattøra

Small-ship berth, 130 m long and 8 m deep, for ships up to 200 m. The port lists it as available after 13:00 and it has shore power.

  • Quay 30, Ila

Used when two ships are in port or the cruise quay is unavailable. It is in the industrial harbour on the other side of the centre from Brattøra, 280 m long and 8 m deep. The port plans better arrival facilities here.

Can you walk? Yes, about 20 min. Walk the flat paved route from Quay 68 past Rockheim and over the pedestrian bridge at the railway, which has lifts. Torvet is about 1.5 km and 15–20 minutes. The cathedral is about 2 km and 25–30 minutes. Sources differ by a few hundred metres. From Ila the route follows Nedre Ila and a footpath beside the houses.

Dock or tender: Tendering is uncommon here. If a ship does anchor, the port says tenders can use the floating bridge at Skansen guest harbour, close to Ila, not the Brattøra quays. Check your daily programme.

Getting to town

On foot

Free15–20 min to Torvet, 25–30 min to the cathedral

Follow signs for Sentrum. Allow extra time at the railway bridge in the last hour before sailing, when everyone returns at once.

AtB city bus

NOK 50 in the app or online, NOK 70 from the driver (adult, zone A, 2026)Short hop from the Hurtigbåtterminalen stop to the centre

Line 25 is the service sources name most often from the express boat terminal stop near Brattøra. A ticket lasts 90 minutes. Buying on board costs NOK 20 more, so use the AtB app.

Cruise line shuttle

Set by your lineShort ride to the centre

Shuttles only run if your line has ordered one. Check the daily programme.

Gråkallbanen tram (line 9) to Lian

NOK 50 each way in the app (2026)About 21 min from the centre

Runs about every 15 minutes in the daytime, 8.8 km through Byåsen to lakes and forest at Lian. It does not reach the station or the quays, so you walk to its city-centre stop first.

Taxi

Agree or ask before you set offShort ride to the centre

Taxis wait at the terminal, but they can run short when several ships are in port. Do not rely on one for the last hour.

When to head back

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Torvet 80 minutes before, and the cathedral 90 minutes before.

For a 17:30 all-aboard, leave the cathedral by 16:00. The walk is simple, but it is 25–30 minutes and the pedestrian bridge fills up near the end of the day. If your ship is at Ila, confirm the route before you go ashore. Do not rely on the same way back as a friend whose ship is at Brattøra.

If you are running late: Take a taxi from Torvet, the station or a hotel rank to your quay, and name the quay number. If you will miss all-aboard, phone the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Where people go wrong: Passengers assume their ship is at Quay 68, then walk back to the wrong side of the centre when a second ship has put them at Ila Quay 30.

Trondheim is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

On your own or a ship excursion?

You do not need a ship tour for the city; everything central is a walk away. A ship tour is worth it if you have limited mobility and your ship is at Ila, or for the Old Timer Railway and historical mine, which takes 4.5–8 hours and is not practical on your own on a port day. Sverresborg and the Lian tram are fine independently on a long call.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming your ship is at Quay 68.

Check the daily programme. On two-ship days one ship can be at Ila Quay 30, on the far side of the centre.

  • Leaving the cathedral until the afternoon.

Published hours outside summer end at 14:00 on weekdays and 13:00 on Saturdays. Go first thing and check your date.

  • Planning a trip to Munkholmen before May 2027.

It is closed until then, and in summer the boats have only run on certain days. Check the timetable.

  • Paying on the bus.

Buy in the AtB app for NOK 50. It costs NOK 20 more from the driver.

  • Counting on a taxi for the last hour.

Taxis can run short with several ships in port. Walk back early instead.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Trondheim is a safe city for visitors. The practical risks are weather and traffic. Bring a light waterproof jacket, as conditions change quickly even in summer. Take care at the railway footbridge and on the slopes up to Kristiansten Fortress, which can be slippery in wet weather. Follow signs on the quay, as this is a working port. Emergency number: 112 police, 110 fire, 113 ambulance.
Accessibility
The walk from Quay 68 is flat and paved, and the pedestrian bridge has lifts. For a shorter trip, use bus line 25 from the Hurtigbåtterminalen stop. The Norwegian fortress agency says access to Kristiansten Fortress is good for wheelchair users. The cathedral tower is not suitable, with 172 narrow steps. The vintage tram has two large steps to board. Ask your ship about a shuttle if your berth is Ila.
If it rains
Rockheim is 200 m from the quay and is the obvious rain plan. Nidaros Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace museums are also indoors. Skip Kristiansten and Lian when cloud is low, because the views are the point. Pirbadet, the swimming pool on Brattøra near Rockheim, is another option; check its hours and fees first.
Crowds
The port sets a limit of 9,000 cruise passengers a day, so crowds are moderate compared with the fjord towns. The cathedral is the pinch point. Go at opening, and walk to Bakklandet while groups are at the cathedral. Solsiden restaurants are busiest in the evening, so lunch there is calmer.
