Ashore from 08:45, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Most ships berth at the Orthios deep-water jetty, a working industrial pier you may not walk along, so a free shuttle of about 5 minutes takes you to the town centre. Ships over 300 m anchor and tender through the marina. Leave town 75 minutes before all-aboard (105 if tendering), and allow 90 minutes on board if you return by train.

Holyhead is a working ferry and cargo port on Anglesey rather than a resort. It took 55 of the 84 cruise calls to Welsh ports in 2025, and most passengers use it as a gateway: Conwy, Caernarfon, Beaumaris and Eryri (Snowdonia) are all within reach by road. The town itself is small and walkable, with a Roman fort around its parish church, a maritime museum and the UK's longest breakwater. South Stack's seabird cliffs are a short taxi ride away. Two things shape the day: taxis are limited on busy days, and there is no walking route out of the port.

When to leave Holyhead

Times include the way back
  • Holyhead town centre (ship at jetty)Free shuttle, about 5 min 16:15
  • Holyhead town centre (ship at anchor)To the marina landing, then tender queue 15:45
  • South Stack Cliffs (ship at jetty)Pre-booked taxi, about 15 min, then shuttle 16:10
  • Bangor (ship at jetty)Train up to 40 min, walk and shuttle about 15 min 15:05
  • Conwy Castle (ship at jetty)Walk to station, train up to 64 min, walk and shuttle about 15 min 14:30
  • Caernarfon Castle (ship at jetty)Pre-booked taxi 35–45 min, then shuttle 15:10

Times are port time, the time your phone shows ashore.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Cruise Jetty (Orthios jetty, formerly the Anglesey Aluminium jetty)

The main cruise berth: 300 m long with 10 m draught. An industrial pier outside the town centre, reached by a free shuttle of about 5 minutes. Road distance to town is not published for this jetty. Tourist information staff and coach parking are on the quayside.

  • Inner Harbour

A 100 m berth with 4 m draught for small ships. Holyhead railway station is listed at 400 m from the port.

  • Tender landing (marina)

Used by ships over 300 m, which anchor rather than berth. Confirm the landing point and onward transport with your ship.

Can you walk? No. Passengers are not allowed to walk along the jetty, so use the shuttle. Once in town the centre is small and walkable, though some streets are hilly with uneven pavement.

Dock or tender: Holyhead is mainly a docking port, but it does tender. The Visit Wales cruise page says vessels over 300 m use an anchorage, with tenders landing through the marina. Regal Princess (330 m) called twice in 2025, so large ships should expect to tender. CruiseMapper also says large ships anchor in the outer harbour. Rough seas can also stop a ship docking, so check your daily programme.

Getting to town

Free cruise shuttle

Free (2026)About 5 min

Runs from the port to the town centre and shopping area for passengers and crew. Find out the time of the last shuttle when you get off; we could not verify frequency or hours.

Taxi

Fares not verified; agree the price firstAbout 10–15 min to South Stack; 35–45 min to Caernarfon

Taxis usually wait near the shuttle drop-off, not beside the ship, and there are few on busy days, so book ahead. The station has a taxi rank on the access road to the ferry terminal.

Train (Transport for Wales)

Fares not verified; check TfWBangor 27–40 min; Llandudno Junction 44–64 min

Holyhead station is about 10 minutes' walk from the shuttle area. Times come from the TfW timetable for December 2024 to May 2025, which showed five weekday morning departures between 08:18 and 11:30, so check current times and your return train before you leave town. For Conwy, check that your train calls at Conwy station; otherwise use Llandudno Junction, about 2 km from the castle.

Local bus

Not verifiedVaries

Buses run around Anglesey but do not suit a tight cruise schedule. Avanti West Coast says no bus runs to South Stack reserve.

When to head back

Leave Holyhead town 75 minutes before all-aboard, or 105 minutes if your ship is tendering. Aim to be on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 if you return by train.

The shuttle is short but you depend on it: there is no walking route to the jetty. Trains are limited, so choose a return that gets you to Holyhead station at least 90 minutes before all-aboard, and plan on one earlier train as your margin.

If you are running late: If you miss a train, ask at the station for a taxi or call one from the rank. If you may miss all-aboard, ring the port agent number on your daily programme straight away. The Harbour Master's office is +44 (0)1407 606878.

Where people go wrong: Taking a train to Conwy or Bangor without checking a return that reaches Holyhead station 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Holyhead is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Take a ship tour for Eryri (Snowdonia), the Snowdon Mountain Railway or a two-castle day. These are 40–60 minutes each way by road, and the ship waits for its own coaches. Beaumaris is also easiest on a tour or with a pre-booked driver. Skip the tour for Holyhead town and South Stack, which are simple by shuttle and taxi. Conwy works by train on a long call if you check return times first.

Common mistakes

  • Planning to walk into town from the ship.

Use the free shuttle. Passengers may not walk along the jetty.

  • Assuming a taxi will be waiting at the ship.

Taxis wait near the shuttle drop-off and run short on busy days. Pre-book for South Stack or Caernarfon.

  • Taking a train to Conwy or Bangor without checking the way back.

Check return times before you leave. Be back at Holyhead station at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.

  • Forgetting the UK ETA.

Visitors from Europe, the USA, Canada and Australia usually need an ETA (£20 in 2026). British and Irish passport holders do not. Confirm with gov.uk and your cruise line before you sail.

  • Assuming your ship will dock.

Ships over 300 m anchor and tender, and rough seas can stop a ship docking. Add 30 minutes to every return time if you are tendering.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
We found no documented crime problem aimed at cruise passengers in Holyhead. The practical risks are outdoors: the coastal trail at South Stack is rugged, uneven and narrow, and wind and rain can change the conditions quickly. Keep to the paths near the cliff edge and wear shoes with grip. Holyhead is an active ferry and cargo port, so stay on the shuttle route and do not enter working areas. For emergencies dial 999. Emergency number: 999.
Scams to know
  • Copycat ETA websites: gov.uk warns that some sites imitate government services and charge more than the £20 fee. Apply through gov.uk.
Accessibility
Ask the ship about step-free access to the shuttle; we could not verify whether it is accessible. Town streets include hills and uneven pavement. At South Stack, a level path runs from the Ellin's Tower car park to a viewpoint outside the tower; the route from the Visitor Centre has 25 uneven steps, and there are 7 Blue Badge spaces across the two car parks. Cadw rates Beaumaris Castle Level 2 (easy), with a short steep ramp and a bridge at the entrance. Conwy and Caernarfon are both Level 4 (strenuous), with steep steps and cobbles. Disabled visitors and a companion enter Cadw sites free. Tendering depends on the ship and the sea; ask before you book.
If it rains
Holyhead has good indoor options close together: the Maritime Museum and Holyhead at War in season, and the Ucheldre Centre gallery and kitchen. Cadw castles stay open in rain but may close at short notice in extreme weather, so check Cadw's social media first. Spiral stairs and cobbles get slippery. South Stack's seabird views suffer in low cloud.
Crowds
Peak days bring up to about 3,560 passengers from one ship, such as Regal Princess, while Viking ships are smaller and called most often. Published 2027 dates suggest July and May are busiest. Pressure falls on taxis and the shuttle rather than the town, so book a taxi in advance and take an early shuttle. On a big-ship day leave town earlier than the 75-minute rule if a queue is forming.

Holyhead cruise port FAQ

Is Holyhead walkable from the cruise port?

No. Passengers may not walk along the jetty, so take the free shuttle, about 5 minutes. The town centre is walkable once you arrive.

Is Holyhead a tender port?

Usually not. Ships up to 300 m berth at the cruise jetty; longer ships anchor and tender through the marina.

Where do cruise ships dock in Holyhead?

Most use the Orthios jetty, formerly the Anglesey Aluminium jetty, in the commercial harbour. Small ships can use the Inner Harbour.

Did storm damage at Holyhead affect cruise ships?

Storm Darragh damaged the ferry berths in December 2024. Terminal 5 reopened on 16 January 2025 and Terminal 3 on 18 July 2025. Our sources do not report damage to the cruise jetty, and calls continued in 2025.

How do I get from Holyhead cruise port to the town?

Take the free shuttle to the town centre and shopping area. The station is about 10 minutes' walk from the shuttle area.

Can I visit Conwy from Holyhead on a cruise day?

Yes on a long call. Trains take about an hour, the castle is about 0.6 km from Conwy station, and adult entry is £12.90 to 31 March 2027. Be back at Holyhead station at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.

What can I do in Holyhead in one day from a cruise ship?

St Cybi's Church, a taxi to South Stack's seabird cliffs, lunch at Newry Beach, then the Maritime Museum and Breakwater Country Park.

Is Holyhead safe?

We found no cruise-specific crime problem. The main care needed is on cliff paths and in the working port area.
