Quick answer: Most ships dock at Balticagade, about 1 km from the centre, so you can walk in 10–15 minutes; ARoS is about 25 minutes on foot and Den Gamle By 30–45. Some calls use a more distant berth in the commercial harbour, so check yours first. Leave the centre 75 minutes before all-aboard and Moesgaard Museum 140 minutes before.
Aarhus is Denmark's second city, and most of what you came for is a walk from the ship: the cathedral, the Latin Quarter, ARoS with its rainbow walkway on the roof, and the Den Gamle By open-air museum. The port expected more than 70 calls in 2026, with ships arriving in every month for the first time, and it reports that 95% of passengers go ashore. The two things that catch people out are the berth, because not every ship uses the quay near the centre, and bus tickets, which must be bought before you board. Moesgaard Museum is the one big sight that needs a bus.

Balticagade cruise quay · 1 km to the centre
The port's main cruise quay, with shore power and a recently renovated reception area. About 1 km to the central shopping and cathedral area and about 0.7 km to Dokk1. Taxis and local tour buses wait outside the security gates.
Commercial harbour berth · 3 km to the centre
Some calls, usually larger ships, use a berth in the commercial harbour. The port lists the Omni Terminal, with 13.5 m of water, as a cruise option. An independent port guide puts larger ships at Eastern Harbour berth 503, about 3 km from the centre, and says shuttles run for ships there. Ask your ship whether it runs one and when the last one leaves.
Can you walk? Yes, about 15 min. From Balticagade the centre is about 1 km, 10–15 minutes on foot. Dokk1 is about 0.7 km, ARoS about 2 km and 25 minutes, and Den Gamle By about 2.5 km and 30–35 minutes; one passenger reported 40–45 minutes, so allow up to 45. Some central streets are cobbled. If your ship is at the commercial harbour berth, use the ship's shuttle if it runs one, or a taxi.
Getting to town
On foot
Free10–15 min to the centre from Balticagade
Walk to Dokk1, then along the Aaen, a street of cafés and restaurants, to the cathedral and the Latin Quarter.
City bus and Letbanen light rail, day ticket
DKK 59 (2026)Valid until 23:59 on the day it is issued for
Unlimited travel on Midttrafik buses and Letbanen. Buy it in the Rejsebillet app or the Midttrafik webshop, or as a printed ticket at the Aarhus Bus Station customer desk (limited hours, Fredensgade 45). You cannot buy a ticket on city buses or Letbanen, and the fine for riding without one is about €130. The 24, 48 or 72-hour Aarhus tickets cost more, at DKK 80, 120 and 160, so the day ticket is the better buy for a port call.
Single ticket
From DKK 26 for 2 zones (2026)Per journey
The most expensive option per trip, but enough for one ride out if you plan to walk the rest. Buy it in the Rejsebillet app before boarding. Each adult can bring two children under 12 free.
Bus 18 to Moesgaard Museum
Two-zone ticket, or the DKK 59 day ticket (2026)About 25 min
Runs directly from Park Allé and Banegårdspladsen in the centre to the museum. Check the return times on Rejseplanen before you leave the city, not at the stop.
Bus to Den Gamle By
Single ticket or the DKK 59 day ticket (2026)Route 3A about every 15 min; routes 14, 114 and 118 about every 30 min
Board at Aarhus Central Station and get off at Viborgvej. The main entrance is at the junction of Silkeborgvej and Viborgvej.
Taxi
Ask for an estimate before you ride (2026)Short ride to the centre
Taxis wait outside the quay's security gates. Useful for the return if you are running late.
When to head back
Leave the cathedral and Latin Quarter 75 minutes before all-aboard, ARoS 85 minutes before, Den Gamle By 105 minutes before and Moesgaard Museum 140 minutes before. If your ship is at the commercial harbour berth, the ship's last shuttle time overrides all of these.
These times get you on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 from Moesgaard, because that return depends on a bus and then a walk from Park Allé. Bus 18 takes about 25 minutes and the walk from the centre to the ship adds up to 25 more.
If you are running late: Take a taxi to the quay named on your daily programme. Say the berth clearly, because Balticagade and the commercial harbour are in different places. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
Where people go wrong: Assuming the ship is at the quay near the centre, or boarding a bus without a ticket bought in advance.

On your own or a ship excursion?
From Balticagade you do not need a ship tour for the centre: the cathedral, Latin Quarter and ARoS are all walkable. A guided walk adds history but costs far more than the ground it covers, and the route is one you can do alone. A ship tour makes more sense for trips outside the city, such as Silkeborg, where a late independent return is the risk, or if your ship is at the commercial harbour berth and you would rather not depend on shuttle times.

Common mistakes
Assuming your ship is at the quay near the centre.
Check the berth on your daily programme. Some calls use the commercial harbour, and that changes the whole day.
Trying to buy a ticket on the bus or Letbanen.
You cannot, and the fine is about €130. Buy a DKK 59 day ticket in the Rejsebillet app or the Midttrafik webshop before you leave the ship.
Planning ARoS or Moesgaard on a Monday outside summer.
ARoS is closed on Mondays from October to May, and Moesgaard was closed on Monday in the November listing. Check the date first.
Planning the cathedral on a Sunday.
It is for worshippers only on Sundays. See it on a weekday, and note the 10:30 opening on Wednesdays.
Leaving too little time for Den Gamle By.
The museum suggests 4–5 hours. On a port call choose a few streets and leave by the time in the return rule, because the walk back can take 45 minutes.
Stepping into a cycle lane without looking.
Cyclists often have right of way in Denmark. Check both ways before crossing.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- Denmark has generally low crime, though the UK and Canadian governments both warn of pickpockets and bag-snatchers in crowded places, mainly in Copenhagen and on public transport. Canada asks travellers to exercise a high degree of caution because of terrorism, and the UK says attacks in Denmark cannot be ruled out. Keep your bag closed in restaurants and on buses. Illegal drugs, including cannabis, are strictly prohibited, and wearing clothing that conceals your face in public is an offence. Emergency number: 112.
- Scams to know
- Distraction theft: thieves sometimes work in teams, with one distracting you while another takes your bag, including in restaurants and on public transport.
- Accessibility
- The walk from Balticagade is about 1 km, but some central streets are cobbled and uneven. ARoS has lifts to all galleries and the rainbow panorama, accessible toilets and wheelchairs on loan. Moesgaard has lifts in all exhibition sections, and wheelchairs and rollators can be borrowed on the day, not reserved. Den Gamle By's cobbled streets are difficult for wheelchairs. The cathedral is partly accessible. Companion cards are accepted at ARoS and Moesgaard. Ask the ship about step-free access at your berth.
- If it rains
- Aarhus suits a wet day. ARoS and Moesgaard are indoor museums, and the cathedral is free and close to the centre. Aarhus Street Food is the easy lunch stop. Den Gamle By is mostly outdoors between houses, so keep it for a dry spell, and take care on wet cobbles.
- Crowds
- CruiseMapper lists only one ship a day in May 2027, but several large ships can call in the same week: the port's busiest week in July 2025 brought more than 16,000 guests, and one ship alone carried 6,600. Go to the rainbow panorama early, because ARoS opens at 09:00 in summer and at 10:00 on weekdays from October to May. Buy Den Gamle By tickets online to skip the queue.
Aarhus cruise port FAQ
Is Aarhus walkable from the cruise port?
Yes from Balticagade. The centre is about 1 km away, 10–15 minutes on foot. ARoS is about 25 minutes and Den Gamle By 30–45 minutes. The commercial harbour berth is about 3 km out, so ask your ship about a shuttle.
Where do cruise ships dock in Aarhus?
Most dock at Balticagade, close to the centre. Some calls, usually larger ships, use a berth in the commercial harbour. Your daily programme names the berth.
Is Aarhus a tender port?
No. Ships berth alongside.
How do I get from Aarhus cruise port to Den Gamle By?
Walk about 2.5 km, or walk to Aarhus Central Station and take bus 3A, about every 15 minutes, to Viborgvej. A day ticket costs DKK 59 (2026).
How do I get to Moesgaard Museum from the cruise port?
Walk to Park Allé or Banegårdspladsen and take bus 18, about 25 minutes. You need a two-zone ticket, bought before boarding. Leave the museum 140 minutes before all-aboard.
What can I do in Aarhus in one day from a cruise ship?
The cathedral, the Latin Quarter and Møllestien, ARoS and its rainbow walkway, and a shortened visit to Den Gamle By. Swap the last for Moesgaard if archaeology appeals more.
Beaches near Aarhus cruise port?
Den Permanente, 2.5 km from the centre at Risskov, is free, with changing rooms and showers. It is a summer stop, about 10 minutes by bike from the centre.
Is Aarhus safe?
Yes. Crime is generally low. Watch your bag in crowded places and look out for cyclists when crossing.
