Build my San Diego day free

Ashore from 09:00, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Ships dock at the B Street Cruise Terminal or at Broadway Pier, both on North Harbor Drive on the downtown waterfront, with no tender. Bus 992 from the airport takes about 15 minutes to Santa Fe Depot for $3 (2026), then it is a two-block walk; a taxi or rideshare starts at about $25. On sailing day be at your terminal 90 minutes before all-aboard, and do not arrive before 10:00.

San Diego is mainly a homeport, and its piers sit on the Embarcadero, right beside downtown. The airport is about 2.5 miles away, so most of the day is on foot. Two facts catch people out. You cannot leave a car at the terminal, and Mexico sailings need a passport. B Street is the main terminal, and Broadway Pier is a short distance south, so check which one your documents name.

When to leave San Diego

  • San Diego ZooBus or taxi, allow 45 min, then 90 min at the terminal 13:15
  • Coronado Ferry LandingHourly ferry, 15 min crossing, allow 75 min, then 90 min at the terminal 12:45

Times are port time, the time your phone shows ashore.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • B Street Cruise Terminal, 1140 North Harbor Drive · 1.6 km to the centre

The main terminal, with two berths. Most ships use it. About 2.4 miles from the airport. Drop-off is past the gate, on the pier. There is no luggage storage at the pier and no long-term parking.

  • Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier, North Harbor Drive · 1.6 km to the centre

One berth, used when B Street is busy. About 2.7 miles from the airport. The pier also has public waterfront access, and the Coronado ferry leaves from beside it. Check your documents for which terminal you need: drop-off is on this pier, not at B Street.

Can you walk? Yes, about 20 min. Santa Fe Depot is about two blocks from the terminals. Downtown around 4th Avenue is under a mile, about 20 minutes on foot at a normal pace. The Embarcadero waterfront runs for about two miles past the USS Midway towards Seaport Village, on flat ground.

Getting to town

Bus 992 from the airport

$3 adult, one way (from October 2026)About 15 min to Santa Fe Depot, every 15 min, 04:30–01:00

Stops on the elevated platform at both airport terminals. Get off at Kettner Blvd and W Broadway, opposite Santa Fe Depot, then walk about two blocks to the piers. Each passenger pays separately, by PRONTO or a contactless card or phone. Daily adult fares cap at $7 (2026).

Taxi or rideshare from the airport

From about $25 (2026)Under 10 min with clear roads; allow 20

Ask to be dropped past the gate, on the pier, to avoid the line outside. Taxis, rideshare, shuttles and private cars can all use the pier drop-off. After the cruise, rideshare pick-up is on Harbor Drive outside the terminal gate.

On foot

FreeAbout 20 min to downtown

The waterfront and downtown are flat and walkable. The USS Midway, the Maritime Museum and Portside Pier are all on North Harbor Drive.

Coronado ferry from Broadway Pier

$9 one way (2026)15 min, hourly

Leaves from 990 N Harbor Drive. A second ferry from the Convention Center runs every 30 minutes, also $9. Check the last return against your all-aboard.

Trolley and Santa Fe Depot

$3 adult, one way (from October 2026)Depot about two blocks from the piers

The depot connects three Trolley lines, Rapid buses, COASTER and Amtrak. The free San Diego Flyer shuttle links the airport with the Old Town Transit Center, every 20–30 minutes, for transit riders only.

Bus to the Zoo

$3 adult, one way (from October 2026)Check the MTS timetable

Rapid 215 and Route 7 stop at the Zoo and serve downtown and the cruise terminal area.

Driving and parking

About $15–40 a day; check each provider (2026)Book ahead

Long-term parking is not available at the terminals, and you may not park on the pier during the cruise. The port does not own or run cruise parking. It lists Ace at the Wyndham, across the street, and ABM lots at 0.6 miles without a shuttle. It also lists San Diego's Park, Shuttle & Fly and Aladdin, both with a shuttle.

When to head back

Be at the terminal named in your documents 90 minutes before all-aboard. Do not arrive before 10:00, and use your assigned boarding time if you have one.

All-aboard differs by line, so read it from your documents. Add your travel time to the 90 minutes: allow 15 minutes from the USS Midway, 20 from Seaport Village, 25 from the Gaslamp Quarter, 40 from the airport area and 45 from the Zoo. From the Coronado Ferry Landing allow 75 minutes, because the Broadway Pier ferry is hourly.

If you are running late: Take a taxi or rideshare and ask for drop-off on the pier, past the gate. From Coronado, the Convention Center ferry runs every 30 minutes if you miss the Broadway Pier boat. Call the cruise line or port agent number in your documents straight away if you will be late.

Where people go wrong: Passengers plan to leave a car at the terminal, where long-term parking is not available, and lose time finding a lot on sailing day.

San Diego is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

In March 2024, eight Norwegian Dawn passengers on a private tour came back to the pier in São Tomé more than an hour after all-aboard. Getting back on board took six days, seven countries and over $5,000. The details

  • The ship charges for the easy part.

Carnival sells a coach to Rome for US$129.99 a person. The train is from €9.20 return. PortTrip tells you which train, and the last one that gets you back. The details

Coronado ferry, then bus 904 along Orange Avenue or a walk from the Ferry Landing · 15 min ferry, then under an hour on foot · $9 one way for the ferry (2026)

One of the safest swimming beaches in the area. Rip currents are common on this coast, so swim where lifeguards are on duty and obey the flags.

What to eat

  • Surf and turf or oysters · Brigantine Seafood and Oyster Bar, Portside Pier, 1360 N Harbor Drive
  • Mexican plates · Miguel's Cocina, Portside Pier
  • Pub-style grill and craft beer, walk-up or dine-in · Ketch Grill & Taps, Portside Pier
  • Coffee and gelato · Portside Coffee & Gelato, Portside Pier

On your own or a ship excursion?

You do not need a ship's tour for a day in San Diego: the USS Midway, the Maritime Museum and the Embarcadero are on foot from the pier, and buses reach the Zoo. Consider a line's coach only for a disembarkation tour that ends at the airport, if you do not want to carry bags. There is no luggage storage at the pier.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming you can park at the terminal.

Long-term parking is not available there. Reserve a lot ahead and check whether it has a shuttle.

  • Sailing to Mexico without a passport.

The port says passports are required for Mexico cruises. Check your line's rules for other itineraries, as these can differ.

  • Arriving at the pier hours early.

Do not arrive before 10:00, and keep to your boarding time. If you are early, walk the Embarcadero.

  • Getting out at the gate and joining the outside line.

Ask your driver to go past the gate and on to the pier.

  • Expecting to leave bags at the pier for the day.

There is no luggage storage at the pier. Use your hotel or a storage service.

  • Taking a pedicab without agreeing the fare.

Agree the total, for the whole group, before you get in. Pay by card so that you can dispute the charge.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
San Diego's waterfront and downtown are generally safe, with good lighting and visible policing. The usual city risks apply: pickpocketing and bag-snatching in busy areas. East Village has a slightly higher crime rate than the Gaslamp Quarter or the Embarcadero. If you swim, stay where lifeguards are on duty, because rip currents are common on this coast. Emergency number: 911.
Scams to know
  • Pedicab bait-and-switch: a low spoken fare, then a per-person rate card at the end of the ride. City permits are required, so look for one and agree the total first.
  • Fake discount tickets for the Zoo and other attractions that are expired or already used. Buy from the official site.
  • Texts that imitate city parking notices and link to phishing pages.
  • Hotel-lobby recruiters who offer free tickets for a timeshare presentation that runs long, with high-pressure sales.
Accessibility
The waterfront is flat, and Holland America describes the walk from the Santa Fe station as a wheelchair-accessible sidewalk. Contact your cruise line before you leave home to arrange mobility help at the terminal. The USS Midway offers wheelchair access, ASL and audio-described tours. Balboa Park has a free ADA-accessible tram from its paid parking lots in the Cultural District.
If it rains
Use the USS Midway, the Maritime Museum or the museums in Balboa Park. The Coronado ferry still runs, but a beach visit is not worthwhile. Check your line for boarding time before you start the day.
Crowds
The 2026–27 schedule runs from 24 August 2026 to 24 May 2027, with 177 listed sailings. Two ships are due on 31 dates, and three on 3 January 2027 (Disney Wonder, Serenade of the Seas and Azamara Quest). On those dates allow more time for drop-off on Harbor Drive. The port's schedule is at portofsandiego.org.

  • All-aboard time in San Diego: no official or typical figure found. The day plan's 15:30 is a planning assumption, and it varies by line and sailing.
  • Street number of the Broadway Pier terminal: the port's own pages disagree, giving 1000 and 1100 North Harbor Drive.
  • Which ship uses which terminal on which date: the port's schedule does not say.
