Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerCruise ships dock at Pichilingue, next to the ferry terminal and about 17 km north-east of La Paz, so you cannot walk to town. The cruise line shuttle takes about 30 minutes to the downtown bus terminal by the malecón (Carnival charged US$10 return in 2025); a taxi is about US$40 one way. Board a return shuttle at least two hours before all-aboard, because the last shuttle can leave town well before the ship sails.

Status and sourcesLa Paz is a working state capital rather than a cruise town, and the ship sits far out at the industrial ferry port of Pichilingue. The day therefore turns on transport: the shuttle into the 5 km malecón, or a taxi to Balandra and Tecolote, the clear, shallow beaches close to the port. Boat trips to Isla Espíritu Santo and, in winter, to the whale sharks in the bay are the big draws. Cruise calls are few, around 40 a year in 2025, so the town rarely feels crowded.
Walkable? No (17 km)
The port is about 17 km from the malecón along a coastal highway with no practical walking route. Once you reach the malecón, downtown La Paz is flat and easy on foot.
Where your ship docks
Cruise line shuttle bus
Carnival: US$10 return age 13+, US$8 age 6–12, under-6s free (2025)About 30 min (20 min to Coromuel beach, then about 10 min more to downtown)
Carnival started charging for this previously free shuttle in February 2025; other lines may differ. The bus stops at Playa Coromuel, then ends at the downtown bus terminal between the cathedral and the malecón. Show your cruise card to reboard. On one January 2025 call buses ran into town from 08:15 to 13:30 and returned every 20 minutes, with the last at 15:30; times follow your ship's hours.
Taxi from the pier
About US$40 one way to downtown for up to four; US$5 each extra person (2025)About 30 min
Vendors at the terminal sell rides. A three-hour hire was quoted at US$150 for up to four, and a run to Balandra or Tecolote at US$25 (2025). Agree the price and the pick-up time before you get in.
Ship or local tour
Varies; check your cruise plannerHalf day or longer
Boat trips to Isla Espíritu Santo and whale shark swims need a licensed operator. Tour vans also wait at the downtown bus terminal.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Board a return shuttle downtown at least 120 minutes before all-aboard, and know the time of the last shuttle before you leave the ship.
The ride is about 30 minutes, and on some calls the last shuttle has left town 2–2.5 hours before the ship sailed. Miss it and you need a taxi, at around US$40, for a 17 km ride.
If you're running late
Take a taxi from the malecón to Pichilingue (about 30 minutes) and call the port agent number on your daily programme if you will be late. Carry US dollars or pesos in cash for this.
Larger ships berth alongside at Pichilingue, near the ferry terminal, and passengers walk off. Seabourn's port page describes its ships anchoring in the Bay of La Paz, so small luxury ships may tender; check your daily programme.

Skip the ship tour for downtown: the shuttle and a walk along the malecón cover it. A tour is worth it for Isla Espíritu Santo and for whale sharks, because both need a licensed boat and a fixed return time, and the long ride back to Pichilingue leaves little margin. For Balandra, a ship tour or a taxi with an agreed pick-up time are both reasonable; going alone without a return booked is the risky option.
Assuming you can walk into town from the ship.
Instead: Pichilingue is about 17 km away. Book the shuttle or agree a taxi before you leave the pier.
Planning to come back on the last shuttle.
Instead: The last shuttle can leave town well before sailing. Take one two hours before all-aboard.
Turning up at Balandra in the afternoon expecting to get in.
Instead: Numbers are capped per shift. Arrive before a shift starts and carry cash for the MX$120 fee.
Booking a whale shark swim without checking the season.
Instead: Sharks are in the bay in winter only, and the 2025 season was cut short. Use a licensed operator and confirm sightings.
Getting in a taxi without a price.
Instead: Agree the fare in dollars or pesos, and the return pick-up time, before setting off.
The US State Department rates Baja California Sur at Level 2, exercise increased caution, the same as Mexico overall (May 2026). Visitors on the malecón and at the beaches mostly face practical risks: strong sun and heat, no shade at Balandra, and boat trips with unlicensed operators. Use the cruise shuttle, licensed tours and taxis from the official rank, keep valuables out of sight, and carry water.
Scams and tourist traps
Emergency number: 911
Crowds
La Paz had about 40 cruise calls in 2025 and 51 scheduled for 2026, so you will rarely share it with another ship. The pressure points are the shuttle queues at the pier first thing and before the last return, and Balandra's capped shifts at weekends and holidays. Go out on an early shuttle and come back on an early afternoon one.
Accessibility
The Carnival shuttle has carried wheelchairs and scooters. The malecón is a long, flat, paved promenade and suits wheelchair users. Downtown streets have kerbs and uneven pavements. Balandra is reached on foot over sand with no facilities, and boat trips to Espíritu Santo or the whale sharks need you to climb into small open boats, which is hard for anyone with limited mobility.
If it rains
Rain is rare except in the late summer storm season, when Pacific hurricanes can also cancel calls in the Sea of Cortez. On a wet or windy day stay downtown: the anthropology museum, the cathedral and the markets are all within a short walk of the shuttle stop.
