Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Ships dock at the pier in Santa Cruz Bay, so there is no tender, and Santa Cruz beach and marina are a few minutes' walk from the gate. La Crucecita, the main town, is about 2 km away: a hot 20–30 minute walk or a US$3–5 taxi. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, and allow longer if you go out to a far bay by boat.

Huatulco is a planned resort area spread along a string of bays on the Oaxaca coast, with much of the coastline inside a national park. The cruise pier is in Santa Cruz Bay, a small beach-and-marina district with restaurants and shops. The real town, La Crucecita, sits a short taxi ride inland with its plaza, church and market. The day here is about water: a swim at Santa Cruz, snorkelling at La Entrega, a boat trip along the bays, or the Zapotec site at Copalita. Calls are relatively few, so even a single ship can feel busy at the pier.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Santa Cruz Huatulco cruise pier · 2 km to the centre

Ships berth alongside in Santa Cruz Bay. Santa Cruz beach is immediately left of the pier gate (about 150–200 m) and the marina, where boat trips leave, is to the right (about 300–400 m). There is a tourist information desk in the terminal and taxis wait at the pier. No bank ATM at the pier; banks are in La Crucecita.

Can you walk? Partly, about 25 min. Santa Cruz beach, the craft market and the marina are 2–7 minutes' walk. La Crucecita is about 2 km by a footpath that rises and falls and has little shade: 20–30 minutes, tiring in the heat. Most people walk Santa Cruz and take a taxi to La Crucecita.

Getting to town

On foot (Santa Cruz)

Free2–7 min

Santa Cruz beach is directly left of the pier gate; the craft market and marina are a few minutes further.

Taxi

About US$3–5 to La Crucecita; about US$5 Tangolunda; about US$6 El Maguey; about US$30 an hour (2026, per vehicle)5–10 min to La Crucecita; 6–10 min La Entrega; 20–25 min Copalita

Taxis wait at the pier. They have no meters, so agree the fare before you get in, and confirm whether it is per car or per person. Pay cash, preferably pesos. Uber is not reliably available.

Walk to La Crucecita

Free20–30 min

Leave the port, turn right on the main road, then left after about 100 m onto a wide footpath. It is not signed for La Crucecita, goes up and down, and has little shade.

Boat (panga) from Santa Cruz marina

Negotiated per trip (2026)Varies by bay

Small boats from the marina reach bays such as San Agustín and Cacaluta that are hard or impossible to reach by road. Agree the price, the bay and an exact pick-up time before leaving. Missed pick-ups from remote bays have made passengers miss their ship.

When to head back

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. From La Crucecita, take a taxi back at least 75 minutes before; from Copalita, leave at least 90 minutes before.

Re-boarding security takes 10–15 minutes and longer on multi-ship days. Boat trips to remote bays depend on the boatman coming back on time, so set the pick-up at least two hours before all-aboard. Independent operators are not waited for by the ship.

If you are running late: From La Crucecita, the taxi stand on the main plaza gets you to the pier in 5–10 minutes. If you are stuck at a remote bay or running late, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Where people go wrong: Taking a panga to a remote bay without a firm pick-up time and waiting for a boat that comes late.

Huatulco is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Santa Cruz beach, La Crucecita and La Entrega are cheap and easy without a tour. A ship's catamaran tour is worth it if you want to see several bays in one go without negotiating boats, and it returns you to the pier. Take a ship tour for anything far inland, such as waterfalls or coffee farms 1.5 hours or more away, where a delayed return is a real risk.

Common mistakes

  • Walking to La Crucecita at midday.

The path has little shade and goes up and down. Take a US$3–5 taxi and save your energy.

  • Taking a boat to a remote bay without a firm pick-up time.

Agree the price, the bay and the pick-up time before you leave, and set it at least two hours before all-aboard.

  • Paying in dollars at pier-side stalls.

Ask for the peso price. Dollar prices and exchange rates are usually worse.

  • Expecting a bank ATM at the pier.

Use bank ATMs (BBVA, Banamex, Santander) in La Crucecita; non-bank machines charge high fees.

  • Getting into a taxi without agreeing the fare.

Taxis are unmetered. Agree the fare, and whether it is per car, before you set off.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Huatulco is one of the tourist areas of Oaxaca that the US government lists as open to its staff without restriction; the state as a whole carries an 'exercise increased caution' advisory because of crime. Normal precautions apply: watch for pickpockets around the La Crucecita plaza on busy days, use taxis from the pier or the plaza rank, and leave valuables on the ship or in a locker at the beach. Ask at the terminal information desk about currents before swimming at open beaches, and use reef-safe sunscreen. Emergency number: 911.
Scams to know
  • Guides steering passengers to particular jewellery shops for commission. Compare silver prices in more than one shop before buying.
  • Unofficial guides and drivers outside the pier gate. Use the taxis at the pier and agree the fare first.
  • Inflated US dollar prices at pier-side stalls. Ask for the price in pesos.
Accessibility
The pier has level walkways and Santa Cruz beach and marina are a short, flat walk. The footpath to La Crucecita is hilly and not suitable for wheelchairs; take a taxi. Ship catamaran tours need you to manage a few steps on and off the boat and coach, and Holland America marks its bays tour as not wheelchair accessible. INAH lists accessibility features at the Copalita site, but paths there are uneven.
If it rains
The cruise season, November to April, is the dry season, so rain is unusual. If it does rain or the sea is rough, spend the day in La Crucecita: the church, the plaza cafés and the market. Boat trips may be cancelled in heavy swell.
Crowds
Huatulco gets few calls compared with bigger Mexican ports, but a single ship fills Santa Cruz beach and La Entrega quickly. Go to La Entrega first thing and visit La Crucecita around midday. On days with two ships, leave the pier earlier and allow 20 minutes more for the return.
