Transport: Port of Salerno (Stazione Marittima, Molo Manfredi) to the centro storico (old town)

Salerno is a docking port with the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Paestum and Naples all within reach by ferry or train. The Stazione Marittima, designed by Zaha Hadid and opened in 2016, sits on Molo Manfredi next to Piazza della Libertà and the start of the Lungomare Trieste promenade. Salerno's own old town, with its cathedral, medieval lanes and the Giardino della Minerva, is a short walk away. The catch is that many Amalfi Coast ferries leave from Piazza della Concordia, about 2 km along the seafront, and that Pompeii now caps daily admissions and sells tickets for fixed time slots.

Walkable? Yes · about 15 min (0.6 km)

From Molo Manfredi, walk to Piazza della Libertà and on into the old town in 10–15 minutes. The Lungomare Trieste promenade runs about 2 km from the port to Santa Teresa beach. Salerno railway station and Piazza della Concordia ferry piers are about 25–30 minutes on foot. From Molo 3 Gennaio take the free shuttle.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard from the old town. After an Amalfi Coast ferry or a Naples train, be back at the port 90 minutes before all-aboard. Leave the ruins at Pompeii at least 3.5 hours, and Paestum at least 3 hours, before all-aboard.

Ferries can be cancelled in rough seas, and many land at Piazza della Concordia, about 25–30 minutes' walk from Molo Manfredi. Pompeii and Paestum add a walk to and from their stations plus the 25–30 minute walk from Salerno station to the port.

If you're running late

If a ferry is cancelled, the only way back from Amalfi is by road along the coast, which is slow in summer traffic; tell the port agent on your daily programme at once. From Salerno station or Piazza della Concordia, take a taxi to the Stazione Marittima if you are short of time.

Salerno's old town needs no tour. Amalfi by ferry and Paestum by train are both manageable alone on a normal call if you book the return in advance and leave plenty of margin. Pompeii is where a ship tour earns its price: tickets are named, admissions are capped at 20,000 a day and sold in morning and afternoon slots, and the trip involves two walks and a train each way. A ship tour also makes sense for Positano or Ravello on a short call, or whenever the sea is rough, because a cancelled ferry leaves only the slow coast road back.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Salerno

Assuming the Amalfi ferry leaves from beside the ship.

Instead: Many sailings use Piazza della Concordia, 25–30 minutes' walk away. Check the pier printed on your ticket for both directions.

Turning up at Pompeii without a timed ticket.

Instead: Buy a named ticket online for the 09:00–13:00 slot. Daily admissions are capped and the afternoon slot has far fewer places.

Taking the last ferry back from Amalfi or Positano.

Instead: Pick a sailing that lands you in Salerno at least 90 minutes before all-aboard, and remember sailings stop in rough seas.

Planning the Giardino della Minerva or Castello di Arechi on a Monday.

Instead: Both are closed on Mondays. Use the cathedral, old town and Lungomare instead.

Walking to the station from Molo 3 Gennaio.

Instead: That berth is about 3 km out; take the free shuttle to the centre first.

Safety: is Salerno safe for cruise passengers?

Salerno is a straightforward port day. The main practical risks are timing ones: ferries that stop in rough seas and trains or crowds at Pompeii. At Pompeii, carry water and wear sturdy shoes; the site is large, exposed and paved with uneven stone. Keep valuables secure on busy trains and ferries.

Emergency number: 112

Practical information

Crowds

Pompeii is the pressure point: admissions are capped at 20,000 a day, with 15,000 in the morning slot and 5,000 in the afternoon, so book early. For Amalfi or Positano, take an early sailing so you have time to spare for the return. Salerno's own old town stays calmer than the coast.

Accessibility

The Molo Manfredi terminal is modern, and free shuttle vans for wheelchair users run at both cruise piers. The seafront and Lungomare Trieste are flat. The old town has narrow lanes and the Giardino della Minerva is terraced on a hillside, so it is hard going. Pompeii's streets are uneven Roman paving with high kerbs. Ask ferry operators about step-free boarding before booking.

If it rains

Stay in Salerno: the cathedral and its crypt, the old town lanes and lunch take most of a day. Naples, 38–55 minutes by train, is the best wet-weather trip, with its museums. Avoid the Amalfi ferries in bad weather, as sailings stop in rough seas and the coast road back is slow.
