Salerno Cruise Port to the Old Town: Walk, Shuttle or Taxi
Quick answer: Most ships dock at the Stazione Marittima on Molo Manfredi, about 600 m from the centre. You walk to the old town in 10–15 minutes along the flat seafront, so you need no transport. Ships at the Molo 3 Gennaio berths, about 3 km out, get a free shuttle bus to the centre. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, which means leaving the old town about 75 minutes before it (85 minutes from Molo 3 Gennaio).
Salerno is a docking port, not a tender port, and its old town is a short walk from the ship. What catches people out is further away: many Amalfi ferries leave from Piazza della Concordia, about 2 km along the seafront, and the railway station is 25–30 minutes on foot.
Where the cruise ships dock
Stazione Marittima, Molo Manfredi (Amalfi Coast Cruise Terminal). This is the Zaha Hadid terminal that opened in 2016, next to Piazza della Libertà and the start of the Lungomare Trieste promenade. It is about 0.6 km from the centre. It has a tourist information point, luggage storage, toilets, free WiFi and a taxi rank. Some Amalfi and Positano ferries use the same pier.
Molo 3 Gennaio (berths 8, 9 and 10). These commercial port berths are used for additional ships. They are about 3 km from the centre. Free shuttle buses run to the centre when ships berth there.
Both piers have free shuttle vans for wheelchair users. Your cruise documents will say which pier you are at.
Walking from Molo Manfredi to the old town
- ·Cost: free.
- ·Time: 10–15 minutes to the old town; 25–30 minutes to Salerno railway station or the Piazza della Concordia ferry piers.
- ·Route: walk off the quay to Piazza della Libertà, then on into the old town. The walk along the seafront is flat.
In the old town, everything is on foot:
- ·Via dei Mercanti: Salerno's oldest street, running from the Arco di Arechi to Piazza Portanova. Allow about an hour.
- ·Cathedral of San Matteo (Duomo): free to enter, with a richly decorated crypt. Hours are shorter on Sundays and holidays.
- ·Giardino della Minerva: a terraced medieval garden of medicinal plants above the old town. €3 full, €1.50 reduced (2026 listings). Open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:30–19:30; closed Mondays.
- ·Lungomare Trieste: a 2 km seafront promenade from the port to Santa Teresa beach.
The seafront and the Lungomare are flat. The old town has narrow lanes, and the Giardino della Minerva is terraced on a hillside, so it is hard going with a wheelchair or a pushchair.
The free shuttle from Molo 3 Gennaio
If your ship is at Molo 3 Gennaio, do not try to walk. The berth is about 3 km out.
- ·Cost: free.
- ·Time: a short ride to the centre.
- ·Where to board: at the berth. It runs between Molo 3 Gennaio and downtown when ships berth there.
- ·Gotcha: allow for the walk to the stop and the wait. Leave the old town about 85 minutes before all-aboard.
Taxi
There is a taxi rank at the Molo Manfredi terminal. Ask for an estimate before you set off.
A taxi is worth it in two cases. The first is the Castello di Arechi, the hilltop castle above the city: bus 19 is infrequent, and a taxi is the reliable way up. The castle costs €4 full, €2 reduced, free for under-18s and over-65s (2026 listings), and opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–16:00. The second is the trip back: if you are short of time at Salerno station or Piazza della Concordia, take a taxi to the Stazione Marittima.
Beyond the old town: ferries and trains
- ·Ferry to Amalfi: 35–60 minutes, depending on stops. One-way fares run from €6.50 to €23.50 depending on operator and sailing; Travelmar's Amalfi–Salerno leg is from €12 (2026). Sailings run from about early April to the end of October and stop in rough seas. Many leave from Piazza della Concordia, opposite the railway station; some use Molo Manfredi. Check the pier printed on your ticket for both directions.
- ·Train to Pompei, Paestum or Naples: from Salerno station, 25–30 minutes' walk from the ship. Pompei is 25–47 minutes by train, Paestum about 30–40 minutes, Napoli Centrale about 38 minutes by Frecciarossa or 39–55 minutes by regional train.

When to head back
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard if you stay in the old town. With the walk, that means leaving about 75 minutes before all-aboard, or 85 minutes if your ship is at Molo 3 Gennaio.
After an Amalfi ferry or a Naples train, be back at the port 90 minutes before all-aboard, which means leaving Amalfi about 3 hours before it. Leave Paestum at least 3 hours, and the ruins at Pompeii at least 3.5 hours, before all-aboard.
| All-aboard | Leave old town (Molo Manfredi) | Leave old town (Molo 3 Gennaio) | Leave Amalfi | Leave Pompeii ruins |

| 19:00 | 17:45 | 17:35 | 16:00 | 15:30 |
If an Amalfi ferry is cancelled, the only way back is the slow coast road, so tell the port agent on your daily programme at once. For a full day plan, see the full Salerno port guide, or plan your day with your own all-aboard time.
Common mistakes
- ·Assuming the Amalfi ferry leaves from beside the ship. Many sailings use Piazza della Concordia, 25–30 minutes' walk away. Check the pier on your ticket for both directions.
- ·Walking to the station from Molo 3 Gennaio. That berth is about 3 km out. Take the free shuttle to the centre first.
- ·Taking the last ferry back from Amalfi or Positano. Pick a sailing that lands you in Salerno at least 90 minutes before all-aboard, and remember sailings stop in rough seas.
- ·Planning the Giardino della Minerva or Castello di Arechi on a Monday. Both are closed on Mondays. Use the cathedral, the old town and the Lungomare instead.
