Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerPortofino is a tender port: ships anchor in the Gulf of Tigullio and tender passengers into the small harbour, a short walk from the Piazzetta. Some ships anchor off Santa Margherita Ligure instead; from there Portofino is about 15 minutes by ferry or a short bus ride. Join the tender queue 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freePortofino is a tiny harbour village at the tip of a protected promontory, with one square, a ring of painted houses and a castle above. There is no cruise pier and no room for big crowds, which is why the town has crowd rules on its quays and why many 'Portofino' calls now anchor off Santa Margherita Ligure or Rapallo. Your day depends on two things: where your tender lands, and the boat and tender timetables. The village itself takes two or three hours; the rest of the day goes on the promontory walks, San Fruttuoso by boat or Santa Margherita.
Walkable? Yes · about 5 min (0.3 km)
If your tender lands in Portofino, everything in the village is on foot. The castle, the church of San Giorgio and the lighthouse path climb steeply above the harbour. If you land at Santa Margherita, Portofino is a ferry or bus ride away.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be in the tender queue in Portofino by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard (90 minutes before). If you went to Santa Margherita or San Fruttuoso, be back in Portofino by 15:30.
Tender capacity is the bottleneck. Everyone returns in the last two hours, and swell can slow the boats. Ferries to San Fruttuoso and Santa Margherita run to a timetable and can be cancelled in bad weather, so a missed or cancelled boat must still leave you time to get back.
If you're running late
From Santa Margherita take the ATP bus or a taxi to Portofino if the ferry is cancelled. From San Fruttuoso the only alternatives to the boat are long trails, so never take the last boat. If you will miss the last tender, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
No ship can berth: all calls anchor and tender. Since 2016 the anchorage off Portofino has been about 560 m from the coast, cutting the tender ride to around 5 minutes; expect longer when the sea is rough. Tenders land in the harbour in the centre of the village, close to the Piazzetta. Some ships, especially larger ones, anchor off Santa Margherita Ligure and land passengers there; in 2025 about three-quarters of the season's 140 calls used the anchorage off Santa Margherita, and the Rapallo anchorage was brought back into use. Check your daily programme for the landing point and the last tender time; the last tender is typically 1–2 hours before sailing.

You do not need a tour for Portofino itself: the village is a few minutes from the tender landing and is best on foot. A ship tour is worth considering if your ship anchors off Santa Margherita or Rapallo and you only want a guided visit to Portofino, because the tour handles the ferry or coach timing and the ship waits if the tour is late. A tour also makes sense for San Fruttuoso on a short call or in uncertain weather, since the public boats can be cancelled.
Assuming the tender lands in Portofino.
Instead: Check the daily programme. Many 'Portofino' calls anchor off Santa Margherita or Rapallo, and you then need a ferry or bus.
Waiting for friends or a tour group on the quay by the Piazzetta.
Instead: Lingering and group gathering on the signed red-zone stretches was banned in season from 2023 and again in 2025, with fines up to €275. Meet away from the quay.
Taking the last boat back from San Fruttuoso.
Instead: San Fruttuoso has no road. Take a boat that gets you to Portofino by 15:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
Joining the tender queue 30 minutes before all-aboard.
Instead: Be in the queue 90 minutes before. Everyone returns at once and the sea can slow the tenders.
Only carrying a card.
Instead: Carry some euro cash; some restaurants, such as Puny, are cash only.
Portofino is safe for visitors. The real hazards are steep, uneven paths above the harbour, the step between tender and quay in a swell, and heat on the promontory trails in summer. The quays have no barriers in places, which is one reason the town restricts crowding there. Watch the weather: boats to San Fruttuoso and Santa Margherita stop in rough seas.
Emergency number: 112
Crowds
Portofino is very small and fills fast with day visitors and cruise groups from mid-morning. The town introduced red zones on the quays in 2023 and renewed them for 2025. Go ashore on an early tender, see the Piazzetta first, then climb to the castle or take a boat while the groups arrive. San Fruttuoso's beach is crowded in summer.
Accessibility
Tender boarding depends on the sea, and reviewers report a high step at the Santa Margherita landing; ask the ship whether wheelchair users can go ashore. The harbour front and Piazzetta are fairly level, but the castle, San Giorgio, the Museo del Parco and the lighthouse path all climb on steps or steep paths. The Abbey of San Fruttuoso is hard for wheelchair users: steps from the landing, a stretch of beach and three levels joined by stairs. Disabled visitors and one companion enter the abbey free.
If it rains
In heavy rain the promontory paths are slippery and the ferries may stop, so stay in the village: Castello Brown's rooms, the churches and a long lunch. Santa Margherita by bus is the other option. If the sea is rough the tenders may be suspended altogether, so follow ship announcements.
