Lerwick Cruise Port

Quick answerShips either berth at Holmsgarth or Mair's Pier, 20–40 minutes' walk north of the centre with a free shuttle to Harrison Square, or anchor and tender to pontoons at Victoria Pier in the town centre. Lerwick itself is small and easy on foot. Be back at the shuttle stop 90 minutes before all-aboard, or at the tender pontoon 120 minutes before; the last shuttle leaves 45 minutes before the ship departs.

Transport: Port of Lerwick (Lerwick Port Authority) to Lerwick town centre (Commercial Street and the Esplanade)

Lerwick is Shetland's main port and Britain's most northerly cruise destination. The centre runs along Commercial Street and the Esplanade by the old harbour, with the Shetland Museum at Hay's Dock a short walk north. The port expects 147 cruise calls and about 130,000 passengers in 2026, and up to 4,000 passengers can be ashore at once. The weather can change through four seasons in a day, and the best of Shetland's scenery, Jarlshof, Sumburgh Head and Eshaness, is an hour or more away by road.

Walkable? Partly · about 35 min (1.9 km)

From Holmsgarth allow 20–30 minutes and from Mair's Pier 30–40 minutes on foot to the centre. If you tender or berth at Victoria Pier, you step straight into town. The centre itself is compact and easy to explore on foot.

Where your ship docks

  • Holmsgarth (No. 5 berth) · 1.6 km to the centre — About 1 mile from the centre, 20–30 minutes on foot. Free shuttle to Harrison Square. The Toll Clock Shopping Centre and a supermarket are nearby.
  • Mair's Pier · 1.9 km to the centre — The main cruise berth, with 275 m of usable quay, about 1.2 miles from the centre (30–40 minutes on foot). Free shuttle to Harrison Square. Dredging of the approaches and the North Ness channel was due for completion in early 2026 to let larger ships use more of the quay.
  • Victoria Pier (berth and tender pontoons) — In the historic town centre, within easy walking distance of the shops. Used by smaller ships alongside and as the tender landing. Public toilets are on the Esplanade opposite.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

If docked at Holmsgarth or Mair's Pier, be at the Harrison Square shuttle stop 90 minutes before all-aboard (16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard). If your ship is at anchor, be at the Victoria Pier tender pontoons 120 minutes before all-aboard. From Sumburgh or Jarlshof by bus, leave at least three hours before all-aboard.

The last shuttle leaves 45 minutes before departure, which is far too late to rely on. With up to 4,000 passengers ashore, shuttle and tender queues build in the last hours. Tenders from the Brei Wick anchorage take 10–20 minutes, and longer in poor weather. Bus 6 from Sumburgh takes up to 80 minutes and does not run frequently.

If you're running late

In town, take a taxi to your berth; Mair's Pier and Holmsgarth are under 2 km away. From the South Mainland, call a taxi rather than waiting for the next bus. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Larger ships often anchor and tender passengers to modern landing pontoons at Victoria Pier, in a sheltered dock in the town centre. From the inner anchorage (0.3 miles out) the tender ride takes about 5 minutes; from the Brei Wick anchorage it takes 10–20 minutes depending on the weather. On tender days Victoria Pier may be partly or fully closed to the public.

A one-day plan for Lerwick (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at Mair's Pier at 08:00 and all-aboard is 17:30, on a weekday in summer.

  1. 08:30 Free shuttle from Mair's Pier to Harrison Square.

  2. 08:45 Walk down to Commercial Street and the Esplanade. Pick up the walking circuit at the iCentre (opens 09:00).

  3. 09:15 Fort Charlotte, the 17th-century artillery fort in the town centre. The grounds are open to the public.

  4. 10:00 South along Commercial Street to the Lodberries, the old traders' houses on the waterfront (the Jimmy Perez house in the Shetland TV series). It is private; photos from outside only.

  5. 11:00 Walk north along the waterfront to the Shetland Museum and Archives at Hay's Dock. Entry is free; check the day's opening hours.

  6. 12:45 Lunch at Mareel's café next door, or fish and chips at The Fort Cafe.

  7. 14:00 Option A: a walk round Clickimin Loch to the Iron Age Clickimin Broch. Option B: shopping for Fair Isle knitwear on Commercial Street.

  8. 15:30 Back towards Harrison Square.

  9. 16:00 Shuttle back to Mair's Pier, 90 minutes before all-aboard.

  10. 16:30 Back on board, an hour before all-aboard.

Lerwick town needs no tour: the Lodberries, Commercial Street, Fort Charlotte and the Shetland Museum are all walkable. The ship's tour is worth it for the South Mainland (Jarlshof, Sumburgh Head, Mousa) and Northmavine (Eshaness), which are an hour or more each way on roads with infrequent buses. Bus 6 to Sumburgh works on a long weekday call if you check both directions first. Local tour operators get busy on big-ship days, so book any private tour in advance.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Lerwick

Relying on the last shuttle.

Instead: It leaves 45 minutes before departure. Aim to be at Harrison Square 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Trying to see Jarlshof, Sumburgh Head and Eshaness in one day.

Instead: Sumburgh is up to 80 minutes each way by bus and Eshaness is in Northmavine, far to the north. Choose one area, or take the ship's tour.

Leaving tour bookings until the day.

Instead: Up to 4,000 passengers can be ashore at once and local operators fill up. Book in advance.

Dressing for the morning weather.

Instead: Shetland can have four seasons in a day; even July and August average 14–18°C. Bring a waterproof and a warm layer.

Expecting shops to be open on Sunday.

Instead: Most shops open 09:00–17:00 Monday to Saturday; only some open on Sundays. Supermarkets open daily.

Safety: is Lerwick safe for cruise passengers?

Lerwick is a small, safe town. The main risks are weather and terrain: wind and rain arrive quickly, cliff paths at Sumburgh Head and elsewhere are exposed, and paving and steps are slippery when wet. Keep out of the port's operational areas and the restricted zones beside the cruise berths, which are controlled under the port security plan. Police non-emergency: 101.

Emergency number: 999 (112 also works)

Practical information

Crowds

The port expects 147 calls in 2026, and up to 4,000 cruise passengers can be ashore at once. The Lodberries, Commercial Street and the museum are busiest in late morning. Go to the far end of town first, and visit the museum early or after lunch. Check Lerwick Port Authority's 2026 cruise list for the number of ships on your date.

Accessibility

Passengers with mobility needs should contact Lerwick Port Authority in advance (info@lerwick-harbour.co.uk). The shuttle runs from Holmsgarth and Mair's Pier to Harrison Square. Commercial Street is paved; some of the lanes rising from it are steep. The path round Clickimin Loch is paved and suitable for all abilities. On tender days, transfers depend on the swell; ask the ship.

If it rains

Spend the morning in the Shetland Museum and Archives (free) and the afternoon at Mareel, with café stops on the Esplanade. Commercial Street's knitwear and craft shops are a good dry browse. Skip the cliff walks and boat trips to Noss in poor weather.
