How Far Is Rome from the Cruise Port?
Rome's cruise port is not in Rome. Ships dock at Civitavecchia, a harbour town about 70 km north-west of the city. By the FL5 regional train it is 50–60 minutes to Roma San Pietro (€4.60) or 75–85 minutes to Roma Termini (€5), fares as of 2026.
The direct answer
| Option | Cost (one way, 2026) | Time |
|---|---|---|
| FL5 train to Roma San Pietro | €4.60 | 50–60 min |
| FL5 train to Roma Termini | €5 | 75–85 min |
| SIT coach to San Pietro or Termini | €12.50 | Varies with traffic |
| Taxi | Agree the fare before you get in | Varies with traffic |
| Ship's coach transfer | Varies by line | Varies with traffic |
Add the first leg at both ends: the free port shuttle to Largo della Pace (10–15 minutes) and a 15–20 minute walk to Civitavecchia station.
Why it takes longer than the distance suggests
The train ride is only part of it. A typical outbound trip looks like this:
- ·Ship to Largo della Pace. Walking inside the port is not allowed. The free Port Mobility shuttle runs about every 15–20 minutes and takes 10–15 minutes.
- ·Largo della Pace to the station. About 1–1.5 km south along the seafront, past Forte Michelangelo. Roughly 15–20 minutes on foot.
- ·The train. 50–60 minutes to San Pietro, 75–85 to Termini. Two to three trains an hour for most of the day.
So a "Rome day" is four to five hours in the city wrapped in two train journeys.
How to take the train
Tickets: buy at the station machine, the counter or in the Trenitalia app. The fare is fixed, so there is no need to book ahead.
Validation: stamp a paper ticket in the platform machine before boarding. App tickets do not need stamping.
Which station in Rome:
- ·Roma San Pietro: 10 minutes on foot from St Peter's Square. The faster ride, and best for the Vatican and the centre.
- ·Roma Termini: the longer ride, but the easier start for the Colosseum. From San Pietro, allow 40 minutes each way to the Colosseum.
- ·Trastevere and Ostiense: same €4.60 fare as San Pietro.
The Civitavecchia Express has been suspended since June 2024. Plan on the regular FL5.
Return: the most important part
The rule: be on a train leaving Rome at least three hours before all-aboard.
That covers the train, the walk back to Largo della Pace, the shuttle and terminal security. It gets you on board about 90 minutes before all-aboard, with one train's worth of slack.
| All-aboard | Latest train out of Rome |
|---|---|
| 17:00 | 14:00 |
| 18:00 | 15:00 |
| 18:30 | 15:30 |
| 19:00 | 16:00 |
From Termini the ride is about 25 minutes longer, so leave Termini earlier. If a train is cancelled, take the next FL5; they run every 20–30 minutes. On a rail strike day, do not go independently.
How much time do you get in Rome?
Example for an 18:30 all-aboard, docking at 07:00:
- ·07:15 leave the ship, shuttle to Largo della Pace
- ·08:00 FL5 from Civitavecchia
- ·About 09:00 arrive Roma San Pietro
- ·14:15 start back to the station
- ·14:50 train back from San Pietro (15:30 at the absolute latest)
- ·Time for sightseeing: about five hours
That is enough for one area: the Vatican and the centre, or the Colosseum and the Forum. Not both.
