Monaco Cruise Port to Monte-Carlo and Monaco-Ville: Walk, Lifts or Bus
Quick answer: Ships dock at the cruise terminal on the Rainier III breakwater in Port Hercule. Place du Casino in Monte-Carlo is about 850 m away, 10–12 minutes on foot. Monaco-Ville, the old town on the Rock, is about 700 m away but takes 15–20 minutes because of the climb. Free public lifts and escalators take out most of the hills. The Bateau Bus crosses the harbour for €2 on board or €1.50 by card, and CAM city buses cost €2 from the driver, €1.50 by card or €5.50 for a day pass (2026). Be back on board an hour before all-aboard: 16:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
Where the cruise ships dock
- ·Monaco cruise terminal (Rainier III breakwater, Port Hercule). A 352 m semi-floating breakwater on the outer side of the harbour, with security and passenger controls. Monaco-Ville is about 700 m from the terminal gate and the Casino about 850 m.
- ·At anchor off Port Hercule. When the berth is taken, or the ship is scheduled for the roadstead, it anchors off and runs its own tenders into the harbour. The crossing takes a few minutes, but afternoon queues for return tenders can be long.
- ·Port de Fontvieille is a yacht marina on the far side of the Rock, not a cruise berth.
Check your itinerary first. Since 2020 Monaco has accepted only ships of up to 250 m and 1,250 passengers. If your ship is bigger, your "Monaco" call is probably at Villefranche, about 45 minutes away by coach.
Walking and the free public lifts
Walking is the quickest way around, and nothing in Monaco is more than about 20–25 minutes from the terminal.
- ·To Place du Casino (Monte-Carlo): about 850 m, 10–12 minutes.
- ·To Monaco-Ville: about 700 m, 15–20 minutes because of the climb.
- ·To the Oceanographic Museum, Palace and Cathedral: all on the Rock, about 20 minutes.
- ·Cost: free.
The catch is height. The Palace, the Oceanographic Museum and the Casino all sit well above the harbour. Monaco has free lifts and escalators between levels, and the lifts up to Monaco-Ville are reached from Avenue des Corsaires. Pick up a lift map at the terminal before you set off.
Bateau Bus across the harbour
The Bateau Bus (Line B) is a small harbour boat between Quai Antoine 1er, on the Monaco-Ville side, and Quai des États-Unis, on the Monte-Carlo side.
- ·Cost: €2 paid on board, or €1.50 by bank card or the Monapass app (2026).
- ·Time: under 10 minutes across.
- ·Frequency: roughly every 20 minutes from each side, 08:00–20:00.
- ·Why use it: it saves about a kilometre of walking around the harbour.
CAM city buses
Monaco's CAM network has six day lines, running about 07:00–21:00, and services are frequent.
- ·Cost: €2 from the driver, valid for 30 minutes for a connection. €1.50 by contactless card or the Monapass app. €5.50 for a day pass (2026).
- ·Useful lines: lines 1 and 2 both serve Monaco-Ville and Monte-Carlo. Lines 5 and 6 go to Larvotto beach.
- ·How to pay: pay the driver, tap a contactless card, or use the app.
In 2026 the whole network was free during the Grand Prix week (1–8 June) and the Monaco Yacht Show (18–30 September), with road closures.
Taxi and hop-on hop-off bus
Taxis wait at the pier, generally until early evening. Fares are metered, so ask for an estimate before you get in and make sure the meter runs. Rideshare pickups in Monaco are not reliable. The hop-on hop-off bus starts just outside the terminal and loops round the main sights without any climbing; check the price at the stop.
Comparing the options
| Option | Cost (2026) | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walk with public lifts | Free | 10–12 min to the Casino, 15–20 min to Monaco-Ville | Most passengers |
| Bateau Bus (Line B) | €2 on board, €1.50 by card or app | Under 10 min across the harbour | Moving between Monaco-Ville and Monte-Carlo |
| CAM bus | €2 from driver, €1.50 by card, €5.50 day pass | Short hops | Saving your legs, Larvotto beach |
| Hop-on hop-off bus | Check at the stop | Loop of the main sights | Seeing the sights without climbing |
| Taxi | Metered; ask for an estimate | Varies with traffic | Limited mobility, Èze |
Going further: Nice by train
TER trains run from Monaco-Monte-Carlo station to Nice-Ville in about 22–25 minutes. Buy tickets at the station machines or in the SNCF Connect app, and check the fare before you travel. The station is underground, about 1.3 km from the terminal, 20–25 minutes on foot and hard to find. A bus or taxi is easier.
When to head back
The rule: be back on board an hour before all-aboard if your ship is docked, which is 16:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard. Allow 90 minutes if your ship is tendering or you went to Nice by train.
The walk down from Monaco-Ville or Monte-Carlo is steep in places and lifts can queue. From Nice, be on a train from Nice-Ville at least 2 hours 15 minutes before all-aboard.
| All-aboard | Leave Place du Casino | Leave Monaco-Ville | Leave Nice-Ville station | Back on board (docked) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16:30 | 15:15 | 15:05 | 14:15 | 15:30 |
| 17:30 | 16:15 | 16:05 | 15:15 | 16:30 |
| 18:00 | 16:45 | 16:35 | 15:45 | 17:00 |
On tender days, check the last tender time in your daily programme and allow an extra 30 minutes. If you miss a train in Nice, take the next one; a taxi is slower in traffic. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late.
Common mistakes
- ·Assuming your ship docks in Monaco. Only ships of up to 250 m and 1,250 passengers can call. Larger ships use Villefranche.
- ·Climbing to Monaco-Ville or the Casino in the heat. Use the free public lifts and escalators.
- ·Cutting the return from Nice too fine. The walk from Monaco-Monte-Carlo station to the terminal takes 20–25 minutes.
- ·Trying to get to Èze village by train. Èze-sur-Mer station is at sea level, far below the village. Take a taxi or a tour.
- ·Turning up at the Casino gaming rooms in shorts. Smart-casual dress is enforced and you need your passport.
