ElkePublished 2026-10-166 min readUpdated for 2026 cruise season

Quick Answer

Bačvice is the beach to choose from a cruise ship in Split. It is a free 5–10 minute walk east of the port and ferry terminal, with no transport needed. Kasjuni, a pebble cove below Marjan Hill, is quieter but needs a taxi or Promet city bus (€1.50 by app, €3 from the driver, 2026). Leave Bačvice 90 minutes before all-aboard if your ship is on the St Duje breakwater, 75 minutes if it is at the inner quays.

Beaches Near Split Cruise Port: Bačvice and Kasjuni

Quick answer: Bačvice is the beach to choose from a cruise ship in Split.

Where the cruise ships dock

Split is mainly a docking port, and the berths sit right beside the city.

  • ·Inner city-port quays (Riva end of the harbour): shared with ferries, a 5–10 minute flat walk to the Bronze Gate of Diocletian's Palace on the Riva.
  • ·Outer berths, St Duje breakwater (Gat sv. Duje): two berths for large ships, 15–20 minutes' walk along the harbour road. Some lines run a shuttle to the Riva. Ask at the gangway rather than assuming.
  • ·Anchorage: tendering is allowed, and some ships tender when the berths are full. Tender landings are closer to the Old Town than the breakwater. Your ship will confirm the landing point.

The walk round the harbour is flat and paved, but there is little shade on the breakwater. The harbour road is busy with ferry traffic and coaches, so use the crossings.

Bačvice

Getting there: walk east from the port and ferry terminal. Time: about 5–10 minutes from the port. Cost: free.

Bačvice is a shallow, sandy-pebble city beach. It is busy and lively in summer, and it is the home of picigin, the local ball game played standing in the shallows. The shallow water makes it an easy swim.

Its main strength on a cruise day is distance. You can combine it with the palace without any transport, and you are never far from the ship. The guide's suggested day plan uses it as an afternoon option after a morning in the palace and lunch in Varoš.

Kasjuni

Getting there: taxi or bus towards the south side of Marjan. Time: the guide we use has no checked journey time for Kasjuni. Cost: the beach is free. Sunbeds cost extra.

Kasjuni is a pebble cove below Marjan Hill, quieter than Bačvice. It is the better pick if you want space rather than atmosphere, but it is on the far side of the city from the port, so it takes more planning.

By bus: Promet city buses (zone 1) cost €1.50 through the Promet app or a ticket office, or €3 from the driver (2026). Fares rose 50% on 1 June 2026, and driver tickets now cost double. Buy in the app before you board.

By taxi: a taxi rank serves the port, and Uber operates in Split. Fares are metered or set by the app.

When to head back

The guide's rule is to be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. From the Riva, that means leaving 90 minutes before all-aboard if your ship is on the breakwater, and 75 minutes before from the inner quays. The walk to the outer berths takes 15–20 minutes, plus gangway security. Late-afternoon ferry departures can block the harbour road with queuing cars and foot passengers.

Bačvice is no further from the port than the Riva, so use the same times.

For Kasjuni there is no checked journey time, so build in more margin. We suggest leaving 2 hours before all-aboard whichever berth you are on, and taking a taxi or Uber straight to your berth rather than waiting for a bus.

Common mistakes

  • ·Underestimating the walk back to the breakwater. Allow 20 minutes plus gangway security. Leave 90 minutes before all-aboard.
  • ·Buying bus tickets from the driver. Driver tickets cost double since June 2026. Use the Promet app or a ticket office.
  • ·Choosing Kasjuni on a short call. It needs a bus or taxi each way. Bačvice is walkable and no further than the Riva.
  • ·Sitting in the midday sun. In summer, carry water and find shade between 12:00 and 15:00. The breakwater walk has little shade too.
  • ·Walking into the cathedral from the beach. Shoulders and knees must be covered at the Cathedral of St Domnius.
  • ·Leaving valuables on the sand. Pickpockets work the crowded Riva and the areas around the bus and ferry terminals, which you pass on the way to Bačvice.
