Visby Cruise Port

Quick answerMost ships berth at Visby's cruise quay, opened in 2018, which takes two ships of up to 340 m; ships that anchor send tenders to the cruise quay. The walled Old Town is about 1.2 km away along a marked path, so you can walk in, and the town itself is best seen on foot. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 minutes if your ship is tendering.

Transport: Visby cruise quay (Kryssningskajen) to the walled Old Town

Visby is a medieval Hanseatic town inside one of the best-preserved town walls in northern Europe, and the cruise quay sits just south of it. Everything worth seeing on a short call is within the wall or along it: church ruins, the cathedral, rose-covered lanes, the Botanical Garden and Almedalen park. The streets are cobbled and the town climbs steeply from the harbour towards the eastern wall, so comfortable shoes matter more than transport here.

Walkable? Yes · about 20 min (1.2 km)

About 1.2 km on a marked path from the cruise quay to the Old Town, roughly 15–20 minutes at an easy pace. Inside the wall the streets are cobbled and some climb steeply towards the cathedral and the eastern wall.

Where your ship docks

  • Visby cruise quay (Kryssningskajen, berths 14–15) · 1.2 km to the centre — Opened in April 2018, built by Region Gotland and operated by Copenhagen Malmö Port. Two ships of up to 340 m can berth at once. There is a 300 m² terminal building beside the quay and parking for tour coaches. Smaller ships may use berths in the inner harbour instead; check your daily programme for where your ship ties up.

On foot

Free15–20 min to the Old Town

Follow the marked path north from the quay along the harbour towards Almedalen and the wall. This is the best way in.

Hop-on hop-off bus

A double-decker hop-on hop-off bus is offered as a shore excursion by some lines. Useful if walking the hills is hard.

Ship's tour by coach

From US$69 for a three-hour Visby tour (Holland America, 2026)About 3 hours

Covers Gallows Hill, Almedalen, the Powder Tower, the Botanical Garden, the cathedral and part of the wall. Includes about two hours of walking on cobbles and slopes, and is not wheelchair accessible.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. On a tender call, be at the cruise quay tender landing 90 minutes before.

Allow 20 minutes to walk from the Old Town back to the quay, more from the eastern side of the wall or if you are walking uphill from Almedalen first. On a two-ship day the path and the quay are busy in the last hour.

If you're running late

If you are short of time, take a taxi rather than walking uphill routes. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Ships normally berth at the cruise quay. Ships that anchor in the roads off Visby tender passengers to the cruise quay, so the walk into town is the same either way. Your line will say in advance whether your call is a tender call.

A one-day plan for Visby (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at the cruise quay at 08:00 and all-aboard is 17:30.

  1. 08:30 Walk from the quay along the marked path towards the town, about 20 minutes.

  2. 09:00 Almedalen park and the Powder Tower (Kruttornet), the oldest tower in the wall.

  3. 09:30 Walk up Strandgatan, the old merchants' street, to the Botanical Garden (free) and the St Nicolai ruin.

  4. 10:30 Sankta Maria Cathedral, then climb the steps beside it to Klinten for the view over the roofs and the sea.

  5. 11:15 Stora Torget and the S:ta Karin ruin. Walk Fiskargränd for the roses.

  6. 12:30 Lunch around Stora Torget or Donners plats. Try a Gotland saffron pancake with dewberry jam.

  7. 13:30 Gotlands Museum Fornsalen on Strandgatan (open 11:00–16:00) for the picture stones and Viking silver.

  8. 15:00 Walk outside the wall for a stretch to see its full height, then head back towards the harbour.

  9. 16:10 Leave the Old Town for the quay, about 20 minutes on foot.

  10. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard (90 minutes if tendering).

Gotland countryside (Högklint, Gnisvärd ship settings)Varies by line; check your cruise plannerTaxi or hire car onlyHard to do cheaply alone

Skip the ship tour for Visby itself. The Old Town is a short walk from the quay, the sights are mostly free, and narrow lanes make large groups slow and hard to hear. A ship tour is worth it for the countryside beyond Visby, such as the Högklint cliffs or the Bronze Age ship-shaped stone graves at Gnisvärd, which are awkward to reach without a car. It is also the easier choice if you cannot manage cobbles and hills.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Visby

Wearing smooth-soled shoes.

Instead: Visby's lanes are cobbled and some are steep. Wear trainers or walking shoes with grip.

Taking a ship's coach tour just to see the Old Town.

Instead: It is a 15–20 minute walk from the quay and almost all town sights are free. Save the tour for the countryside.

Leaving the far side of town late.

Instead: The eastern wall is uphill and the furthest point from the quay. Start back at least 80 minutes before all-aboard from there.

Arriving during Medieval Week without expecting crowds.

Instead: Medieval Week in week 32 (early August) brings tens of thousands of visitors. Expect busy lanes and full restaurants.

Relying on cash.

Instead: Cards are widely accepted, but some small places set a minimum card purchase. Carry a card and a little SEK.

Safety: is Visby safe for cruise passengers?

Visby is a low-crime town and safe for visitors on a port day. The main hazards are falls on wet or uneven cobbles and steep lanes, especially around Klinten and the eastern wall. Keep away from the edges of the wall and ruins, which are not fenced everywhere. Watch for cars in the narrow lanes, where there are often no pavements.

Emergency number: 112

Practical information

Crowds

The quay can take two large ships at once, and on those days the path into town and the lanes around Stora Torget fill from mid-morning. Go first to the wall and the Botanical Garden while tour groups gather at the quay, then visit the museum over lunch. Medieval Week in early August is the busiest time of year. On one-ship days the town is calm.

Accessibility

The path from the cruise quay to Almedalen is flat. Inside the wall, cobbles and steep slopes make wheelchair and walker use hard, especially towards the cathedral and the eastern side; the lower town near Strandgatan and Almedalen is the easiest part. Holland America lists its Visby walking tour as not wheelchair accessible. On a tender call, tender boarding depends on the swell; ask the ship whether wheelchair users can transfer.

If it rains

Gotlands Museum Fornsalen is the best indoor option, with a long visit possible. Sankta Maria Cathedral is a working church in the lower town. Otherwise use cafés on Stora Torget and Donners plats. Avoid the steep cobbled lanes and Klinten steps when they are wet.
