Quick answer: Ships berth at quays beside the harbour building, a two-minute walk from the main street; on busy days one ship may anchor and tender to the inner harbour. The North Cape is 33 km away and cannot be reached on foot: the Line 406 North Cape Express bus from Tourist Information takes 3 hours return with 1 hour 15 minutes at the Cape, and its ticket includes North Cape Hall. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or at the tender pontoon 90 minutes before.
Honningsvåg is a small fishing town on Magerøya, and almost everyone who comes ashore here is heading for the North Cape plateau, 307 m above the Barents Sea. The town itself is compact: the quays, Tourist Information, the North Cape Museum and the main street sit within a few minutes of each other. The day is shaped by the 33 km road to the Cape, the weather on the exposed plateau, which can close the road, and the number of ships in port, which decides how quickly tour buses fill.

Times are port time, the time your phone shows ashore.
Plan this day to my shipWhere the ship docks
Berth North (Port of North Cape) · 0.1 km to the centre
Main cruise berth, for ships up to 360 m. Next to the harbour building; Tourist Information and the North Cape Museum are a short walk away. Buses pick up near the terminal.
Berth 3 · 0.1 km to the centre
Second cruise berth, for ships up to 260 m, in the same harbour area.
Inner-harbour tender pontoons · 0.1 km to the centre
Used only when a ship anchors on a busy day.
Can you walk? Yes, about 2 min. The town centre starts at the quay. The main street, Tourist Information and museum are a few minutes' walk; Honningsvåg Church is about 800 m away, uphill. The North Cape is 33 km away and is not walkable.
Dock or tender: Ships normally berth. The port has two tender piers and mooring buoys for tender operations, and on days with several large ships one may anchor and tender passengers to floating piers in the inner harbour, about a 10-minute ride.
Getting to town
On foot (town)
Free2–5 min to the main street
Walk off the quay past the harbour building to Tourist Information, then along the main street.
North Cape Express bus (Line 406)
Price not confirmed for 2026; the ticket includes North Cape Hall entry and the panoramic film3 hours return, with 1 hour 15 minutes at the North Cape
Departs daily from Tourist Information in the centre; tickets are sold there and can be booked in advance. One departure is at 11:15, timed for Hurtigruten. On multi-ship days independent seats can sell out early, so book or buy as soon as you land.
Taxi
Agree the fare before you goAbout 40 minutes each way in summer
Taxis wait in the car park in front of the dock, mainly in the morning. Fewer are around later, so arrange the return pick-up time with the driver.
Hire car
Varies; book ahead45–75 minutes each way depending on conditions
Hire companies operate in the cruise terminal area. In winter the last stretch from Skarsvåg junction to the plateau is driven only in convoy behind a snowplough, at fixed times, and can close completely in bad weather.
When to head back
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard (16:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard). If your ship is tendering, be at the inner-harbour pontoon 90 minutes before. If you go to the North Cape independently, leave the plateau at least 165 minutes before all-aboard.
The plateau road is exposed and can close or slow in wind, fog or snow. In winter the last 13 km run only in convoy at fixed times, so a missed convoy can mean hours of waiting. The 11:15 Line 406 bus returns about 14:15, leaving a comfortable margin.
If you are running late: If the road closes or you are delayed on the plateau, tell the North Cape Hall staff and phone the port agent number on your daily programme at once. Port harbour watch: +47 917 33 143.
Where people go wrong: Leaving it too late to get a bus seat to the North Cape on a multi-ship day, or underestimating plateau weather.

- Local seafood and fish dishes · Nor Café Bistro, Honningsvåg (open all year)
- Arctic Menu dishes · Corner Spiseri, Storgata 1
- Local beer · Sjøgata Pub at Perleporten Kulturhus, which brews its own beer
- Waffles · Julehuset (the Christmas House), Skarsvåg, on the road to the Cape
On your own or a ship excursion?
The ship's North Cape coach is the safe choice here, and for many passengers the sensible one: the ship waits for its own tours if the plateau road is delayed, and on a busy day the independent bus can be full. Go independently on the Line 406 bus only if you can get a ticket early and the timings leave a wide margin. In winter, when the road runs in convoy and closes in storms, book the ship's tour. The town itself needs no tour.

Common mistakes
Planning to walk to the North Cape.
It is 33 km away by road. Use the Line 406 bus, a taxi, a hire car or a ship's tour.
Waiting until late morning to buy a bus ticket on a multi-ship day.
Go straight to Tourist Information when you land, or book in advance.
Dressing for the weather in town.
The plateau is more exposed and usually colder and windier. Take a windproof jacket, hat and gloves.
Driving to the Cape in winter without checking the convoy times.
From Skarsvåg junction the road runs only in convoy at fixed times. Check Statens vegvesen's traffic service before setting off, and allow for closures.
Assuming a taxi will be waiting for the return.
Taxis gather in the morning. Agree the return time with your driver before you leave town.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- Honningsvåg is a small, safe town. The real hazards are the weather and the road: wind, fog and snow on the exposed plateau, and winter closures of the last stretch to the Cape. Keep well back from the cliff edge outside the fenced areas. On the Storfjellet steps and any hill walk, wet rock and sudden wind are the dangers; turn back early. Reindeer graze near the road in summer, so drivers should slow down. Emergency number: 112.
- Scams to know
- No scams specific to Honningsvåg were found in the sources checked. The main money risk is a non-refundable independent tour that cannot run when the plateau road closes, so check cancellation terms.
- Accessibility
- The quays, Tourist Information, the museum and the main street are close together on fairly level ground near the harbour. The church is uphill. At the North Cape, North Cape Hall is the sheltered indoor option, while the plateau itself is open, windy ground. Ask the bus or tour operator in advance about step-free access to the vehicle. If your ship tenders, boarding depends on the swell; ask the ship whether wheelchair users can transfer.
- If it rains
- Fog or rain often hides the view from the plateau, but North Cape Hall's film, exhibitions and Cave of Lights are indoors. In town, the North Cape Museum, Ocean Stories and the cafés along the harbour fill a wet afternoon. Skip the Storfjellet steps in rain or strong wind.
- Crowds
- Honningsvåg handled 173 cruise calls and about 200,000 passengers in 2024. On days with several large ships, buses and the plateau are busiest when the ships' tours arrive. Buy your bus ticket first thing, explore the town while the tour coaches are on the plateau, and visit the museum in the afternoon.
