Quick answer: Ships dock at Canada Place, a 3-minute walk from Waterfront station, and there is no tender in normal use. From the airport the Canada Line takes about 25 minutes and costs C$11.60 on a weekday (2026), and the taxi back from the terminal to YVR is a C$42 flat rate. On sailing day be at terminal security 90 minutes before all-aboard, because you clear US border control here, before you board.
Vancouver is where most passengers start or finish an Alaska cruise, so this guide covers a day in the city before or after the ship, and how to reach the terminal. Canada Place sits on the downtown waterfront, with Gastown and the seawall on foot from the door. The trap here is not the distance. You clear US Customs and Border Protection at the terminal before boarding, so the last step of your day takes longer than a normal return to a ship. On a four-ship day the terminal is also very busy.

Canada Place cruise terminal, 999 Canada Place · 1.2 km to the centre
Three berths, and able to serve up to four ships at once. Waterfront station is next door. Vehicles enter by the ramp at the foot of Howe Street. Ride-hailing drop-off is on parking level P2. Screening is on the cruise ship terminal level (CS). Distance shown is to Robson Square.
Can you walk? Yes, about 14 min. Robson Square is about 14 minutes on foot and Gastown about 10 minutes. Waterfront station is about 3 minutes. The seawall starts at the Vancouver Convention Centre beside the terminal and runs west towards Stanley Park.
Dock or tender: Canada Place is a berth port. Tendering is rare. In 2026 Viking Orion and Viking Venus were due to anchor mid-harbour and tender on 5 and 26 July, because all berths were full. Check your documents if you are on a small ship on a very busy date.

When to head back
On sailing day be at terminal security 90 minutes before all-aboard. If your cruise line gives you an earlier time, use that one.
Boarding runs through baggage drop, screening, cruise line check-in and then US Customs and Border Protection as the final step. Baggage check-in opens between 10:00 and 10:30. Allow 10 minutes from Gastown, 30 from Stanley Park or Lonsdale Quay, 40 from a hotel near the airport, 45 from Granville Island and 60 from Capilano by free shuttle, because that shuttle runs only every 30 minutes. Add those to the 90 minutes. All-aboard differs by line, so read it from your own documents.
If you are running late: Take a taxi to the terminal rather than wait for a bus. Ride-hailing drop-off is on P2. If you will be late, call the cruise line or port agent number in your documents straight away. If you arrive by a delayed flight booked through the line, or gave the line your flight details, the line may hold the ship, but this is not guaranteed.
Where people go wrong: Passengers return to Canada Place too late because they forget the US border check comes before the ship.

On your own or a ship excursion?
Most of Vancouver is easy to do alone before or after the cruise: the seawall, Gastown and Canada Place are on foot from the terminal. A transfer package from the cruise line is worth it if you land on the morning of sailing with a lot of luggage, because line staff at YVR can often recheck your bags to the ship. Capilano has a free shuttle from Canada Place, so a paid tour adds little unless you want the fixed return time.
Common mistakes
Timing the return as if boarding were a quick walk up the gangway.
You pass screening, check-in and US Customs and Border Protection first. Be at security 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Booking an Uber pick-up at the terminal after the cruise.
Pick-up is not allowed there. Walk to the ride-hailing zone at street level, or use the taxi rank.
Applying for an eTA without checking, or assuming you need none.
If you fly into Canada on a visa-exempt passport you need an eTA, C$7. If you arrive only by ship, you do not. US citizens are exempt. Visa-required nationals need a visitor visa.
Packing your passport or medication in checked bags.
Keep both with you. Bags go straight to your cabin and you may not see them for hours.
Assuming Vancouver and Seattle share a clock in winter.
British Columbia stays on UTC−7 all year since 2026. Check the local time on any booking made across the border.
Walking east along Hastings Street from Gastown.
Stay on Water Street and the waterfront. To reach Chinatown, go via West Pender Street.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- Vancouver is safe for visitors around Canada Place and on the waterfront. The Downtown Eastside begins just east of Gastown, centred on East Hastings Street around Main Street. Walking through is distressing rather than usually dangerous, but petty theft is common there, so keep to Water Street and the seawall, especially after dark. The most common crime against visitors is theft from parked cars: leave nothing in sight in a parkade or at a trailhead or beach lot. Keep your phone away on busy streets. Emergency number: 911.
- Scams to know
- Fake parking-meter texts and QR codes that lead to a lookalike payment page.
- Stranded-traveller stories near Waterfront station and the cruise terminal, with a request for cash for a taxi or hotel.
- Screenshot tickets sold outside BC Place and Rogers Arena, where only the first buyer's barcode scans.
- Accessibility
- Most of Canada Place is at ground level, with accessible washrooms on every level and accessible stalls in the parkade. Two new lifts were being added in 2026 between the luggage drop-off on P2 and the ground level. Rent wheelchairs or scooters in advance through Scootaround or Special Needs at Sea, and ask your cruise line about a wheelchair inside the terminal. The port takes part in the voluntary Sunflower programme for hidden disabilities: staff can give you a lanyard, though it does not speed up screening. Service-animal relief stations are outdoors before security and in the secured area after it. Mobility scooters are allowed at the Vancouver Aquarium.
- If it rains
- Vancouver gets a lot of rain, so plan for it outside high summer. Stay indoors at FlyOver Canada in the terminal building, the Vancouver Aquarium, or the Granville Island Public Market. The SeaBus is covered and still gives a view of the harbour.
- Crowds
- The 2026 season ran from February, with ships almost daily from 1 May to 4 October. About 360 calls and over 1.4 million passengers were forecast, a record. Peak weekends, Friday to Monday, were forecast at 40,000 to 50,000 passengers, and the busiest day was Saturday 19 September at about 20,000. Four ships were due on ten dates between May and September, and five on 25 July. On those dates arrive at the start of your check-in window, and expect long queues for taxis. Passengers who leave the ship in the first 30 minutes usually find a car quickly. Check the port's schedule for your date.
Vancouver cruise port FAQ
Where do cruise ships dock in Vancouver?
At Canada Place, 999 Canada Place, on the downtown waterfront next to Waterfront station.
How do I get from YVR airport to the Vancouver cruise port?
Take the Canada Line to Waterfront, about 25 minutes, then walk about 3 minutes. It costs C$11.60 on a weekday and C$10 at weekends or after 18:30, including the C$6.50 YVR AddFare (2026).
How much is a taxi from Canada Place to Vancouver airport?
C$42 flat from the terminal to YVR, on the port's published rates.
Do I clear US customs in Vancouver on an Alaska cruise?
Yes. US Customs and Border Protection is the final step at Canada Place, after screening, on sailing day. Facial biometrics are used, and you can ask for a manual check of your documents instead.
Do I need an eTA for a cruise from Vancouver?
You need one if you fly into Canada on a visa-exempt passport; it costs C$7. You do not need one if you arrive by ship, land or train, and US citizens are exempt. The port also says international visitors need an eTA or an ESTA before reaching the terminal, so check both rules for your passport and route.
Is Vancouver cruise port walkable to downtown?
Yes. Gastown is about 10 minutes on foot and Robson Square about 14 minutes.
Where can I store luggage at Canada Place?
Big Bus Tours Westcoast Sightseeing offers day storage for cruise passengers only, on 1 877 451 1777. There is no overnight storage. CDS Baggage at YVR offers storage and a transfer to your cabin.
What can I do in Vancouver in one day before a cruise?
Stanley Park and the totem poles in the morning, Gastown at lunch, then Canada Place by 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Not yet confirmed
- All-aboard time at Canada Place: no official figure found. The day plan's 15:30 is a planning assumption taken from one line's published check-in close, and it varies by line and sailing.
- Adult admission price at the suspension bridge park: not shown on the official page opened.
- Whether a 2016 list of Gastown restaurants is still current: no Gastown restaurant is listed for that reason.
- Flat taxi fare from the airport into downtown: the airport's page gives no amount.
- Earliest safe flight after disembarking: no official figure found.
