Transport: Ann E. Abramson Pier, Frederiksted to Frederiksted

St Croix has two towns, and most cruise ships call at the quieter one. Frederiksted is a small Danish-era waterfront town on the west coast, with a red fort, a few streets of colonial buildings and beaches within a mile or so of the pier. Christiansted, the larger and better-known town with the National Park Service fort, is about 15 miles away across the island. You can have a good, low-risk day without leaving Frederiksted, or make the trip across the island if you leave plenty of time to come back. Small expedition ships use a separate dock at Gallows Bay, next to Christiansted.

Walkable? Yes · about 10 min (0.5 km)

Walk the length of the pier into Frederiksted; allow about 10 minutes from a ship at the far end. Fort Frederik and Strand Street are at the foot of the pier. Rainbow Beach is about 1.3 miles north and Sandcastle (Dorsch) Beach about 1.3 miles south. Christiansted, about 15 miles away, is not walkable.

Where your ship docks

  • Ann E. Abramson Pier (Frederiksted) · 0.5 km to the centre — Deep-water pier, about 465 m (1,526 ft) long, that can berth two ships but rarely has more than one. Shaded waiting areas, public toilets, free viNGN Wi-Fi and a USVI Department of Tourism information kiosk. Frederiksted's waterfront starts at the landward end of the pier.
  • Gallows Bay Marine Facility (Christiansted) · 1.6 km to the centre — A 400 ft dock with a 13 ft draft limit, used by small expedition and mini-cruise ships. About a mile from downtown Christiansted.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back at the pier 60 minutes before all-aboard if you stay in Frederiksted. Leave Christiansted, Cane Bay or the Cruzan distillery at least 2 hours before all-aboard. Add 30 minutes if your ship is tendering.

Frederiksted is a very easy return because the town is at the foot of the pier. The risk is a trip across the island: Christiansted is about 15 miles away, the bus has no guaranteed connection, and you may wait for a taxi in the afternoon.

If you're running late

From Christiansted, take a taxi rather than waiting for a bus, and agree the fare before setting off. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Ships normally berth at the pier. Some lines, including Norwegian, sometimes anchor off Frederiksted and tender instead, mainly in peak season. Tenders land at the tender piers of the Ann E. Abramson Marine Facility; the rebuilt south tender pier reopened on 4 March 2026. If your ship tenders, add 30 minutes to every return time.

A one-day plan for St Croix (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at 08:00 at the Ann E. Abramson Pier on a weekday and all-aboard is 17:30.

  1. 08:30 Walk off the pier into Frederiksted. Pick up a map at the tourism kiosk at the pier.

  2. 08:45 Fort Frederik museum (opens 08:30 Monday to Friday; $5 adult).

  3. 09:45 Walk Strand Street and the waterfront; coffee at Polly's at the Pier.

  4. 10:30 Taxi or shared van to Christiansted. Agree the fare first.

  5. 11:30 Fort Christiansvaern and the Christiansted National Historic Site (grounds open 08:30–16:30).

  6. 13:00 Lunch in Christiansted.

  7. 14:30 Taxi back to Frederiksted, 3 hours before all-aboard.

  8. 15:15 Swim at Rainbow Beach, about 1.3 miles north of the pier, or relax on the waterfront.

  9. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Skip the ship's tour for Frederiksted, which you can see on foot in a couple of hours. A tour is worth it for Buck Island Reef National Monument, which needs a boat trip, and for snorkel or dive trips that need boat and gear arranged. For Christiansted alone, a taxi or shared van is simple enough if you leave 2 hours to get back.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in St Croix

Assuming Christiansted is next to the ship.

Instead: Most ships dock at Frederiksted, about 15 miles away on the other side of the island. Plan transport and leave Christiansted 2 hours before all-aboard.

Getting into a taxi without agreeing the fare.

Instead: Taxis are not metered. Agree the fare, per person or per vehicle, and one way or return, before you set off. Carry cash.

Boarding the VITRAN bus without exact change.

Instead: The fare box gives no change. Carry $2 in coins or small notes for each ride.

Planning Sandy Point on a weekday or in summer.

Instead: It opens to the public only at weekends, 10:00–16:00, and closes during the spring and summer turtle nesting season.

Booking the 15:00 Cruzan distillery tour.

Instead: Take the 12:00 tour so you can be back at the pier in time.

Safety: is St Croix safe for cruise passengers?

Use the same care you would in any small town: keep valuables out of sight, do not leave belongings unattended on beaches, and use licensed taxis with an agreed fare. Traffic drives on the left, which matters when crossing roads. Sun and heat are the main physical risks; carry water and sun protection, especially on beaches with little shade.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Fare disputes with unmetered taxis: fares are set by the Taxi Commission, but you must agree the price before the trip. Report problems to the Taxi Commission on (340) 773-1561.

Practical information

Crowds

The pier can take two ships but rarely does, so Frederiksted is seldom crowded. Fort Frederik and Polly's are busiest straight after the ship clears; go to the fort first or last. The best weather is from late November to mid-April, which is also peak cruise season.

Accessibility

The Ann E. Abramson Pier is described as fully wheelchair accessible, with shaded waiting areas and toilets, and the Frederiksted waterfront is flat. Older buildings and forts may have steps and uneven floors. VITRAN runs a paratransit service (VITRAN Plus, $4). On tender days, ask the ship whether wheelchair users can transfer.

If it rains

Visit Fort Frederik and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted, or book a weekday Cruzan distillery tour. Christiansted's National Historic Site has indoor rooms in the fort and surrounding buildings.
