Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerMost ships dock at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth on the Bayfront, about 5 minutes' walk from the Old Market and the museum; larger ships use Woodbridge Bay Port, about 1 km north, a 10–15 minute walk along Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard. Trafalgar Falls and Champagne Reef need a taxi or tour, and taxi fares are agreed with the driver. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard from town, and leave the falls or the reef 90 minutes before.

Open my full Roseau day, timed to 17:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about Roseau? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeRoseau is Dominica's small, busy capital, squeezed between the sea and steep green hills. The main cruise berth is right on the Bayfront, so you step off into town. Dominica's appeal is its rainforest and volcanic landscape rather than its beaches: Trafalgar Falls is about half an hour inland, the bubbling Champagne Reef is a short drive south, and the Botanic Gardens and Morne Bruce viewpoint are within walking distance. Most national park sites need a site pass, which you buy on site, not online. Roads are narrow and afternoon traffic in Roseau is slow, so build in time to get back.
Walkable? Yes · about 5 min (0.3 km)
From the Bayfront berth, the Old Market, the Dominica Museum and the shops are about 5 minutes' walk, and the Botanic Gardens about 15 minutes. Morne Bruce viewpoint is a further 20–30 minutes uphill from the gardens. From Woodbridge Bay add 10–15 minutes each way. Trafalgar Falls, Champagne Reef and Emerald Pool are not walkable.
Where your ship docks
On foot
Free5 min to the Old Market; 15 min to the Botanic Gardens
Pavements in central Roseau are narrow and busy. From Woodbridge Bay, walk south along Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard, 10–15 minutes.
Taxi
Agree the fare with the driver before you set off10–15 min to Champagne Reef; 25–30 min to Trafalgar Falls; 40–45 min to Emerald Pool
Taxis wait at the cruise berth. Licensed taxis have number plates starting H, HA or HB; the US State Department advises using only clearly marked official taxis. No official fare list for cruise passengers was found, so agree the price, whether it is per person or per vehicle, the currency and the return time before you get in.
Minibus
Low, standardised fares set by the governmentVaries
Shared minibuses run from stops around Roseau during the day, but routes and times are not obvious to visitors and they are not suited to night travel. Use them only for trips where a delay will not threaten your return.
Rental car
Varies; plus a local temporary driving licence—
Drive on the left. You need a local temporary licence, available from rental offices or the Traffic Department in Roseau; the tourist board gives the age limits as 25–65 with two years' driving experience. Roads are often narrow, steep and potholed, so most cruise passengers are better off with a taxi or tour.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be on board 60 minutes before all-aboard from downtown Roseau (add 15 minutes if the ship is at Woodbridge Bay). Leave Trafalgar Falls, Champagne Reef or Mero Beach 90 minutes before all-aboard, and Emerald Pool 2 hours before.
Afternoon traffic in Roseau is slow and the inland roads are narrow and winding, so the drive back can take longer than the drive out. Agree the return time with your driver when you are dropped off, and do not go to the falls after heavy rain.
If you're running late
Ask your driver or a vendor to call a taxi; Roseau is 10–15 minutes from Champagne Reef and about 30 minutes from Trafalgar Falls. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.
Large ships dock. Small expedition ships sometimes tender into Roseau.
Assumes the ship docks at 08:00 at the Bayfront berth and all-aboard is 17:30. Departure times vary by ship, so check your own all-aboard time and move the plan earlier if needed. At Woodbridge Bay, add 15 minutes each way for the walk.
08:15 Walk off onto the Bayfront and look round the Old Market.
08:45 Taxi to Trafalgar Falls, about 25–30 minutes. Agree the fare and a pick-up time first.
09:20 Buy a site pass at the reception centre and walk 10–15 minutes to the viewing platform.
10:30 Taxi back to Roseau.
11:15 Walk to the Botanic Gardens, about 15 minutes, then climb to Morne Bruce for the view over the town.
13:00 Lunch in Roseau; browse Roseau Market Plaza or the Old Market for coffee, spices and fruit.
14:15 Taxi south to Champagne Reef, 10–15 minutes, and snorkel among the bubbles.
16:00 Taxi back to the Bayfront, 90 minutes before all-aboard.
16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

⏱ About 2.5 hours including the taxiSite pass required, bought at the reception centre; taxi extra
Tip: The walk to the platform is about 10–15 minutes. Do not go after heavy rain, wear shoes with grip, and do not try the boulder scramble to the base alone.

Roseau, the Botanic Gardens and Morne Bruce need no tour. A ship excursion is worth it for whale watching, for diving, and for longer inland trips such as Emerald Pool or the Kalinago Territory (about an hour each way), where the slow roads make a guaranteed return valuable. For Trafalgar Falls or Champagne Reef, a taxi with an agreed fare and return time works well if you start early.
Getting in a taxi without agreeing the fare.
Instead: No official cruise fare list is published. Agree the price, per person or per vehicle, the currency and the return time before you set off.
Expecting to buy the national park site pass online or by card.
Instead: Passes cannot be bought online. Buy one at the site reception centre (Trafalgar Falls, Emerald Pool, Indian River) and carry cash.
Underestimating the drive back.
Instead: Roads are narrow and winding and afternoon traffic in Roseau is slow. Leave the falls and the reef 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Visiting the waterfalls after heavy rain.
Instead: Rivers rise quickly and rocks get slippery. Choose Champagne Reef or the Botanic Gardens instead on a wet morning.
Forgetting which berth the ship is at.
Instead: If the ship is at Woodbridge Bay, about 1 km north, tell your driver and allow 10–15 minutes more on foot.
The US State Department rates Dominica Level 1, exercise normal precautions (May 2026), and the UK FCDO says the crime rate is low. Theft and vehicle break-ins do happen, so do not leave valuables unattended and avoid walking alone on empty streets or isolated beaches after dark. Use only clearly marked official taxis. Sea currents can be stronger than they look and not all beaches have lifeguards. Roads are often narrow and in poor condition. Hurricane season runs from June to November. Tap water is generally safe to drink, and ambulance cover is limited, so a taxi to hospital may be faster after an injury.

Crowds
On days with more than one ship, larger ships use Woodbridge Bay and the popular sites such as Trafalgar Falls fill as tour groups arrive. Start early, go to the falls first, and leave Roseau's sights for the afternoon. Mero Beach is busiest on Sundays.
Accessibility
The Bayfront berth puts you straight into flat downtown streets, but pavements are narrow and busy and the Botanic Gardens and Morne Bruce involve slopes. Trafalgar Falls has a short walk to the viewing platform, and most other nature sites involve rough or wet paths. Woodbridge Bay adds a 1 km walk or a taxi ride into town. Book a suitable vehicle in advance if you use a wheelchair.
If it rains
Rain is common in the interior. Stay in Roseau for the Dominica Museum, the Old Market and the Market Plaza, or snorkel at Champagne Reef, and skip the waterfalls after heavy rain, when rivers run high.
