Ashore from 07:45, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Ships dock at the JAPDEVA cruise pier on the edge of Limón's city centre, so there is no tender: Parque Vargas is a 3–5 minute walk. For Cahuita or Veragua use a red licensed taxi from the taxi desk in the terminal (about US$40 per person to Cahuita, 45–60 minutes) or a tour. Start back from Cahuita or Veragua at least 2.5 hours before all-aboard, and be on board 60 minutes before.

Limón is a working Caribbean port city rather than a resort, and the cruise pier sits right against its centre. The town itself takes an hour or two: Parque Vargas on the seafront, the market, the cathedral and a few streets of Caribbean wooden buildings. Most passengers leave town for wildlife: the canals at Moín just north of the port, the coastal trail at Cahuita National Park to the south, or the Veragua rainforest park inland. Roads out of town are slow and single-lane, so build in margin on the way back.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • JAPDEVA cruise terminal and pier (Hernán Garrón Salazar terminal) · 0.3 km to the centre

Ships berth alongside; no tender. The terminal has an air-conditioned waiting area, free Wi-Fi, tour sellers and a taxi union desk with posted prices. A craft and souvenir market is set up just outside. There is no ATM at the terminal. Up to three ships can call on the same day in peak season.

Can you walk? Yes, about 5 min. Parque Vargas and the downtown grid start about 250–300 m from the terminal exit, a flat 3–5 minute walk. Everything outside the centre (Playa Bonita, Moín, Cahuita, Veragua) needs a taxi or tour.

Getting to town

On foot

Free3–5 min to Parque Vargas

Leave the terminal, cross the street and you are at the seafront park. The market and cathedral are a few blocks further in. Stay on the main central streets.

Red licensed taxi (taxi union desk in the terminal)

About US$10 pp Playa Bonita; about US$40 pp Cahuita or Veragua; about US$55 pp canals, banana plantation and city tour (2026, posted per-person rates that can change)10–15 min to Playa Bonita; 45–60 min to Cahuita

Official taxis are red. Rates are posted at the taxi union desk inside the terminal and quoted per person; groups may get better rates. Taxis have no meters for these trips, so agree the price, what is included and the waiting time before you set off. Pay in cash, ideally small US dollar notes. Uber is not reliable here.

MEPE bus to Cahuita

Under US$3 one way, paid in colones (2026)Slower than a taxi because of stops

Transportes MEPE runs buses south to Cahuita and Puerto Viejo from its stop at Calle 6, Avenida 1, roughly hourly from 05:30, with returns roughly hourly. Buses stop often and can run late, so they are a risky way back to a ship. Check the current timetable at the stop or with MEPE before relying on it.

Taxi plus boat to the Moín canals

Taxi about US$15–20 per car to Moín; boat about US$20–35 pp (2026, negotiated locally)10–15 min to Moín; 1.5–2 hours on the water

Moín is about 6 km north-west of the port and is the start of the canal system that runs up towards Tortuguero. Tortuguero village and national park are far further and are not a realistic DIY trip on a port day.

When to head back

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. From Cahuita or Veragua, start back at least 2.5 hours before all-aboard.

Route 36 south to Cahuita is a single lane each way and roadworks cause delays. The last part of the road to Veragua is gravel. Buses from Cahuita run about hourly and stop often, so take a taxi back unless you are catching a bus with hours to spare. From Moín or Playa Bonita the taxi ride is 10–15 minutes.

If you are running late: If you are running late from Cahuita or Veragua, ask your driver to go straight to the cruise terminal and call the port agent number printed on your daily programme. Taxis queue at the terminal for the short hops back from town.

Where people go wrong: Coming back from Cahuita too late, or by the hourly bus, and getting stuck in roadworks on Route 36.

Puerto Limón is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

In March 2024, eight Norwegian Dawn passengers on a private tour came back to the pier in São Tomé more than an hour after all-aboard. Getting back on board took six days, seven countries and over $5,000. The details

On your own or a ship excursion?

Parque Vargas and the town centre need no tour. Playa Bonita and the Moín canals are short taxi rides and easy to do alone. Cahuita works independently if you agree a taxi with waiting time and leave plenty of margin. A ship tour is worth it for Veragua, where the drive includes gravel road and the ship will wait if the coach is late, and for anything combining two sites in one day. On a short call, or with three ships in, the ship tour removes the return risk.

Common mistakes

  • Getting into a taxi without agreeing the price and waiting time.

Use the red licensed taxis at the taxi union desk in the terminal, where per-person rates are posted. Confirm the total, the waiting time and the pick-up time first.

  • Relying on the hourly bus to get back from Cahuita.

Buses stop often and can run late. Take a taxi back, or catch a bus with at least two hours' margin.

  • Underestimating the drive back on Route 36.

It is single-lane with roadworks. Start back from Cahuita or Veragua at least 2.5 hours before all-aboard.

  • Expecting to find an ATM in the terminal.

There is none. Bring small US dollar notes; ATMs are at banks in town.

  • Planning to visit Tortuguero National Park on a port day.

It is far up the coast and reached by boat. Do the Moín canals instead.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
The central area between the port, Parque Vargas and the main streets is fine on foot in daylight. Stay on the main streets, avoid unlit side streets and residential neighbourhoods, and do not carry valuables openly. The US government advises increased caution across Costa Rica because of crime. Further out, use licensed red taxis or tours rather than flagging down unmarked cars. Take insect repellent, sun protection and rain gear for the parks. Emergency number: 911.
Scams to know
  • Taxi price changes: unmetered fares quoted one way and charged another. Agree the total, per person or per car, the waiting time and the return time before you get in.
  • Unlicensed drivers outside the terminal: official taxis are red and their rates are posted at the taxi union desk inside the terminal.
Accessibility
The berth is alongside and the walk to Parque Vargas is short and flat, though pavements in town are uneven. The Playa Blanca end of the Cahuita trail is flat but sandy and muddy in places. Some ship tours cannot take wheelchairs, walkers or scooters on their transport; Carnival sells a wheelchair-user version of its Veragua tour. Check accessibility for each tour in your cruise planner.
If it rains
Rain is common on this coast at any time of year. Wildlife boat trips on the Moín canals still run in light rain and the boats are usually covered. In town, the Museo Etnohistórico and the market give some shelter. The Cahuita trail turns muddy, so wear shoes you can get wet.
Crowds
On days with two or three ships, taxis and boats at Moín are busiest in the first hour after the ships open. Agree your taxi early, or wait until mid-morning when tours have left. Playa Bonita is busiest on weekends and multi-ship days. Cahuita is quieter if you arrive at 08:00 when the park opens.

Puerto Limón cruise port FAQ

How do I get from Puerto Limón cruise port to Cahuita?

Cahuita National Park's coastal trail, a Moín canals boat trip or Veragua Rainforest, then an hour in Parque Vargas and the town centre.

Are there beaches near Puerto Limón cruise port?
