Grand Turk Cruise Port

Quick answerShips dock at the Carnival-built Grand Turk Cruise Center, a 390-foot walk from its beach, pool and Margaritaville. Governor's Beach is about a mile north and Cockburn Town a 10-minute taxi ride; taxis wait at the cruise center and fares from it are fixed by government, so confirm the fare before you get in. Be back at the cruise center 90 minutes before all-aboard if you leave it, because the return depends on a taxi.

Transport: Grand Turk Cruise Center to Cockburn Town (Front Street)

Grand Turk is a small, flat island, about 7 miles long, where the cruise center is the destination for many passengers: a beachfront complex of nearly 18 acres at the southern end of the island with a large pool, shops, Margaritaville and a FlowRider. For more, Governor's Beach is a shaded stretch of sand about a mile north, and Cockburn Town, the capital, has the National Museum in Guinep House on Front Street. Two things catch people out: you cannot walk to Governor's Beach along the shore, and the islands' strict ban on ammunition covers even a single stray cartridge or casing in a bag.

Walkable? Partly (1.6 km)

Everything inside the cruise center is a short walk from the ship. Governor's Beach is about 1.6 km (1 mile) north, but you cannot walk along the shore because the port blocks the coast; the road route has no pavements and few signs. Walking to Cockburn Town is not recommended; take a taxi.

Where your ship docks

  • Grand Turk Cruise Center — Beachfront complex of nearly 18 acres at the southern end of the island, a 390-foot (about 120 m) walk from the ships. Pool with loungers and cabanas, FlowRider, Margaritaville, Beached Whale Bar & Grill on South Beach, a 45,000 sq ft shopping area, Starbucks and a First Caribbean ATM next to the Harley-Davidson store. Taxis and rental cars are available at the cruise center.

On foot (inside the cruise center)

FreeA few minutes

Beach, pool, Margaritaville and shops are a 390-foot walk from the ship. The beach beside the pier is the least appealing stretch; walk north for better sand and water. South of the complex it is quieter but rocky.

Taxi to Governor's Beach

Fixed fare from the cruise center; confirm before you get in3–5 min

Taxis wait at the cruise center. Fares from the cruise center are set by government, but they apply only from the cruise center, not back to it, and some drivers ask for more. Confirm the fare and whether it is per person or per group before you get in. Pay cash in US dollars.

Taxi to Cockburn Town

Fixed fare from the cruise center; confirm before you get inAbout 10 min

Drops you near Front Street and the National Museum. Agree the return pick-up time and fare with the driver.

Taxi to Grand Turk Lighthouse

Fixed fare from the cruise center; confirm before you get inAbout 20 min

At the northern tip of the island, the furthest point from the ship. Arrange the return pick-up before the driver leaves.

Rental car or golf cart

Book in advance; prices vary—

The port lists Island Auto Rentals, Island View Rentals and Wildplay Adventures (golf carts). Drive on the left; 20 mph in town and on side roads, 40 mph on highways. A licence from your home country is accepted. Livestock often crosses the roads. Golf carts sell out quickly on busy days.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back at the cruise center 90 minutes before all-aboard from Governor's Beach or Cockburn Town, and 2 hours before from the lighthouse. Inside the cruise center, be on board 60 minutes before.

There is no public transport, so the return depends on finding a taxi or on a pick-up you have arranged. The government fixed fares apply only from the cruise center, so agree the return fare too. Walking back from Governor's Beach is about a mile on a road with no pavements.

If you're running late

Ask a taxi driver or vendor to call a driver to take you to the cruise center; Governor's Beach and Cockburn Town are both short rides away. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.

A one-day plan for Grand Turk (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at 08:00 and all-aboard is 17:30. Calls at Grand Turk are often short, so check your own all-aboard time and cut the plan to fit.

  1. 08:30 Walk off the ship through the cruise center to the taxis.

  2. 08:45 Taxi to Cockburn Town, about 10 minutes. Agree the fare first.

  3. 09:00 Turks and Caicos National Museum in Guinep House on Front Street, $5 adult (2026); it usually opens about 09:00 on ship days.

  4. 10:00 Walk Front Street and the historic district.

  5. 10:45 Taxi to Governor's Beach. Swim in the shade of the casuarina trees.

  6. 13:00 Taxi back to the cruise center. Lunch at Margaritaville or the Beached Whale on South Beach.

  7. 14:15 Pool or Cruise Center Beach; walk north from the pier for better sand.

  8. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

You do not need a ship tour for Governor's Beach or Cockburn Town: both are short taxi rides. A tour is the only practical way to Gibbs Cay, where you can see stingrays in the shallows, and dive and snorkel boat trips are also best booked, because the snorkelling near the port and at Governor's Beach has little coral.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Grand Turk

Packing a stray bullet or empty casing in a bag.

Instead: Check every bag before the cruise. Firearms and ammunition, including single cartridges and spent casings, are illegal; offenders may face 12 years or more in prison.

Trying to walk to Governor's Beach along the shore.

Instead: The port blocks the coast. Take a taxi; the road walk has no pavements.

Not agreeing whether a taxi fare is per person or per group.

Instead: Confirm the fare before getting in. The fixed fares apply only from the cruise center, so agree the return fare as well.

Arriving at the National Museum in the afternoon.

Instead: Its hours follow the ship schedule and it usually closes in the early afternoon. Go first.

Assuming the ship leaves late.

Instead: Calls at Grand Turk are often short. Check your all-aboard time before you leave the cruise center.

Safety: is Grand Turk safe for cruise passengers?

The US State Department rates the Turks and Caicos at Level 2, exercise increased caution, for crime (July 2026), and the UK FCDO notes that Providenciales and Grand Turk have seen higher levels of serious crime than other islands. Most crime is opportunistic theft, so keep valuables with you on the beach. The most serious legal risk for visitors is the firearms law: guns and ammunition are illegal, including a single cartridge or spent casing left in a bag. Traffic drives on the left and livestock often crosses the roads. Governor's Beach has no lifeguards. The State Department says tap water is generally safe in most areas.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Taxi overcharging: fares from the cruise center are fixed by government, but some drivers ask more at the destination. Confirm the fare per person before getting in.
  • 'Free' gifts from vendors that are followed by a demand for money, as the US State Department warns.
  • Aggressive vendors and overcharging in tourist areas, also flagged by the US State Department. Agree prices first.

Practical information

Crowds

The cruise center beach and pool fill quickly when more than one ship is in. Walk north along Cruise Center Beach for more space, or take a taxi to Governor's Beach early. Check the port schedule for your date and book golf carts in advance on busy days.

Accessibility

The cruise center is a 390-foot walk from the ship, so you can reach the pool, shops and restaurants with little walking. The beaches are soft sand. Outside the complex there are no pavements on the road to Governor's Beach. Ask at the taxis for a van with space for a mobility aid.

If it rains

Stay inside the cruise center, where the shops and restaurants are, or take a taxi to the National Museum in Cockburn Town in the morning while it is open.
