Freeport Cruise Port

Quick answerShips dock at the Lucayan Harbour Cruise Facility in Freeport's industrial harbour, and there is nothing to walk to, so you need a taxi or taxi van. Port Lucaya Marketplace and Lucaya Beach are about 16 km away, 15–25 minutes by road. Leave Port Lucaya or the beaches 90 minutes before all-aboard, because shared vans wait to fill and queues build in the afternoon.

Transport: Lucayan Harbour Cruise Facility (Freeport Harbour) to Port Lucaya

Freeport is a docked port, but not a walkable one. The cruise pier sits in a working harbour on the west side of Grand Bahama, and everything visitors come for, from Port Lucaya Marketplace to Lucaya and Taino beaches, is a drive away. The day comes down to agreeing a taxi fare at the pier, choosing one area, and getting back in good time. Carnival ships may instead call at Celebration Key, Carnival's own destination on the south coast, which opened in July 2025 and works very differently.

Walkable? No (16 km)

Nothing of interest is within walking distance of Lucayan Harbour beyond the terminal's own stalls. There is no safe pedestrian route out of the gated port; reaching the main road for a public bus means a long walk past truck traffic.

Where your ship docks

  • Lucayan Harbour Cruise Facility (Freeport Harbour) · 16 km to the centre — Basic terminal in an industrial harbour with room for up to three ships. Straw market, craft and souvenir stalls, tour desks, car hire desks, Senor Frog's and Robinson's Seafood Delight are inside the port area. Taxis and taxi vans wait a few minutes' walk from the ship. Distance given is to Port Lucaya; downtown Freeport is about 10 km (6 miles).
  • Celebration Key (Carnival Cruise Line only) — Carnival's private destination on the south coast, about 32 km (20 miles) east of Freeport, opened in July 2025. It is self-contained; to leave it you need a taxi from the transport hub.

Taxi van (shared)

About US$5–15 per person each way to Port Lucaya (2025–2026 reports)15–25 min to Port Lucaya

Most taxis are vans that leave when full. Agree the fare per person, and the return pickup if any, before you get in. Drop-off is normally at Port Lucaya Marketplace. Return waits of 20–30 minutes are reported at peak times in the afternoon.

Private taxi

About US$20–30 each way to the Lucaya area; government meter rate US$3 for the first quarter mile plus US$0.40 a mile, US$3 per extra passenger (2025)15–25 min to Port Lucaya; 45–50 min to Lucayan National Park

Drivers often quote a flat fare instead of using the meter. Confirm the total before the car moves. For remote places such as Lucayan National Park or Paradise Cove, book a firm return pickup time, because there is no taxi rank there.

Public bus

Buses run between Freeport and Lucaya but do not enter the port. Not practical for a cruise day.

Prices vary; check with the desks at the terminalSelf-drive

Avis, Hertz and Dollar are among the firms at the port. Driving is on the left. Uber and Lyft do not operate on Grand Bahama.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Leave Port Lucaya, Lucaya Beach or Taino Beach 90 minutes before all-aboard. From Lucayan National Park or the East End, leave at least two hours before.

The ride back to Lucayan Harbour takes 15–25 minutes, but shared vans may wait to fill, and the busiest return window is mid-afternoon. Freeport roads can flood during and after heavy rain, according to the US State Department.

If you're running late

At Port Lucaya, take any private taxi rather than waiting for a van to fill, and pay the higher fare. If you are stuck at a remote beach or the national park, call the driver you booked, or the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

A one-day plan for Freeport (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at 08:00 and all-aboard is 17:30.

  1. 08:30 Off the ship. Walk to the taxi area, agree a per-person fare to Port Lucaya Marketplace and get in a van.

  2. 09:00 Arrive at Port Lucaya. Walk round the marketplace and the marina before it gets hot.

  3. 09:45 Walk 5–7 minutes to Lucaya Beach for a swim. Keep valuables with you and swim with someone.

  4. 12:30 Lunch: conch at Billy Joe's on Lucaya Beach, or back at the marketplace.

  5. 13:30 Live music in Count Basie Square, or shopping for straw work and batik.

  6. 15:45 Head for the taxi pick-up at Port Lucaya. Take a private taxi if no van is filling.

  7. 16:00 Leave Port Lucaya, 90 minutes before all-aboard.

  8. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Do Port Lucaya and Lucaya or Taino Beach on your own: it is a short, cheap taxi van ride and there is little to gain from a tour. A ship excursion is worth it for Lucayan National Park, the East End, snorkelling trips and anything on the water. The park is 45–50 minutes away with no taxi rank, and the US State Department warns that jet ski and boat operators are poorly regulated, so a vetted operator with a guaranteed return is the safer choice.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Freeport

Trying to walk out of the port.

Instead: There is nothing to walk to and no safe pedestrian route. Take a taxi van from the rank by the terminal.

Getting into a taxi without agreeing the fare.

Instead: Agree the total, per person or per car, before the vehicle moves. Carry small US dollar notes.

Leaving Port Lucaya 30 minutes before all-aboard.

Instead: Leave 90 minutes before. Vans wait to fill, and the afternoon queue is the busiest time.

Going to Lucayan National Park or a remote beach without a return booked.

Instead: Book a firm pickup time with your driver, or take a tour; there is no taxi rank there.

Renting a jet ski from a beach operator.

Instead: The US State Department warns operators are poorly regulated and some are unlicensed or uninsured. Use a ship-vetted operator or skip it.

Safety: is Freeport safe for cruise passengers?

The US State Department rates The Bahamas at Level 2, exercise increased caution, because of crime, and notes that most crime happens in Nassau and Freeport. Stay in busy tourist areas such as Port Lucaya and the main beaches, keep valuables out of sight, and do not resist a robbery. On the water, never swim alone, watch for boats near shore and be aware of currents. Do not swim inside the port. Firearms and ammunition, even a single stray round in a bag, are illegal. Dial 911 or 919 for police and ambulance.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Taxi fares that change: drivers may avoid the meter and quote high flat fares. Agree the total before you get in.
  • Card surcharges: some drivers with card readers add a 3–5% fee. Carry cash in small notes.
  • Unlicensed jet ski and boat operators on beaches: reported by the US State Department, with injuries and assaults recorded. Book water activities through a vetted operator.

Emergency number: 911 or 919

Practical information

Crowds

Usually only one ship calls at Lucayan Harbour, so the island rarely feels crowded. Cruise arrivals on Grand Bahama rose sharply in 2025 after Celebration Key opened, but those Carnival passengers stay mostly at Celebration Key on the south coast. Go to the beach in the morning and shop at Port Lucaya at midday; head back before the mid-afternoon taxi queue.

Accessibility

The walk from the ship to the taxi area is short. Most taxis are vans with steps; ask for help with folding wheelchairs. Port Lucaya Marketplace is a flat, open shopping area. Beaches are soft sand, and Lucayan National Park has boardwalks but also steps down into the caves. Ask your cruise line about accessible transport before you sail, because availability on the island is not easy to check in advance.

If it rains

Port Lucaya Marketplace has covered shops and restaurants and is the simplest rainy-day option. The terminal's own stalls and Robinson's Seafood Delight are under cover too. Avoid long drives in heavy rain: the US State Department notes that Freeport roads often flood during and after storms.
