Cape Town Cruise Port

Quick answerCape Town is a docking port: ships berth at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal at E Berth in Duncan Dock, next to the V&A Waterfront, which you can walk to in daylight. Table Mountain needs a taxi, Uber, City Sightseeing bus or MyCiTi bus plus the free shuttle; buy cableway tickets online (R475 return, 2026) and go early, because wind closes it. Be back at the ship 60 minutes before all-aboard, and leave the mountain 90 minutes before.

Transport: Cape Town Cruise Terminal (E Berth, Duncan Dock) to the V&A Waterfront and city centre

Few cruise ports put you this close to so much. The terminal sits on the edge of the V&A Waterfront, with Table Mountain directly behind the city and Robben Island ferries leaving from the same harbour. The day is ruled by the weather on the mountain: the cableway runs only when wind and cloud allow, so check it the moment you dock and switch plans if it is closed. Crime is a real concern, so use booked taxis or Uber rather than walking between areas, and do not walk anywhere after dark.

Walkable? Partly · about 5 min

The V&A Waterfront is walkable from the terminal in daylight, and is described as within walking distance of the city centre. Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch, Camps Bay and the Cape Peninsula need transport. Do not walk between areas after dark.

Where your ship docks

  • Cape Town Cruise Terminal, E Berth (Duncan Dock) — A converted fruit-export building at the edge of the V&A Waterfront, with immigration, customs, an information kiosk and parking. The V&A Waterfront information centre is about five minutes' walk away. Metered taxis, MyCiTi buses and City Sightseeing buses are within walking distance. Some ships may use other quays in Duncan Dock that are further away; check with your line.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave the Lower Cable Station 90 minutes before all-aboard, and Kirstenbosch 2 hours before. On Robben Island, take a tour that returns at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Waterfront and city traffic builds in the afternoon, and the cableway can stop suddenly when the wind rises, leaving people queueing for the last cars down. Robben Island ferries can be delayed by weather.

If you're running late

If the cableway stops while you are at the top, follow staff instructions; do not try to hike down to make up time. Order an Uber or call a booked taxi from the Lower Cable Station. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

A one-day plan for Cape Town (all aboard 17:30)

  3. 08:30 First car up. Walk the paths on the summit plateau.

Do the Waterfront and Table Mountain on your own: both are close and well served. A ship tour is the better choice for the Cape Peninsula, Cape Point and the Boulders Beach penguins, or the Winelands, which are long drives where traffic and safety make an independent return riskier. If your call is short, a ship tour also removes the risk of being caught by cableway closures or late taxis.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Cape Town

Leaving Table Mountain until the afternoon.

Instead: Go first thing. Wind and cloud often close the cableway later in the day.

Buying cableway tickets at the ticket office.

Instead: Buy online: R475 rather than R530 (2026), and less queueing.

Walking between the Waterfront, the city and Bo-Kaap with valuables on show.

Instead: Use Uber or a booked taxi between areas, keep phones and cameras away, and never walk after dark.

Hiking up or down Table Mountain alone on a cruise day.

Instead: Attacks on hikers have been reported on Table Mountain, Lion's Head and Signal Hill. Use the cableway, or hike only in a group with a guide and plenty of time.

Turning up for Robben Island without a booking.

Instead: Book in advance; tours sell out in the peak season from November to March.

Trying to fit Cape Point and the penguins into a short call on your own.

Instead: Take a ship tour or allow a full day with a reliable driver.

Safety: is Cape Town safe for cruise passengers?

Cape Town has a high level of crime, including muggings and robberies in tourist areas. The V&A Waterfront is busy and well patrolled in the daytime. Do not walk anywhere after dark, keep phones, jewellery and cameras out of sight, and keep bags on your lap in restaurants. Do not hail taxis in the street: use Uber or a taxi booked by phone, sit in the back and check the plate. Attacks on hikers have been reported on Table Mountain, Lion's Head and Signal Hill, including in car parks, so do not hike alone. Power cuts (load shedding) can affect ATMs and traffic lights.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Help at the ATM: strangers offering to help, or machines that keep your card after you enter your PIN. Use ATMs inside a bank or the Waterfront mall, cover your PIN and refuse help.
  • Unofficial cableway tickets: only tickets bought through the cableway's own channels (Webtickets, its partners, WhatsApp) are valid; third-party sales at the stations are not allowed.
  • Express kidnapping: there have been cases where taxi or rideshare drivers forced passengers to withdraw cash. Use an app or a reputable firm, confirm the driver and plate, and never share a ride with strangers.
  • Fake police: criminals have impersonated police at illegal roadblocks. This mainly affects people driving hire cars.

Emergency number: 10111 (police), 10177 (ambulance)

Practical information

Crowds

The 2026–27 cruise season opened in mid-September, and the summer months from November to March are the busiest, with the longest cableway and Robben Island queues. Book both online, go up the mountain on the first cars, and leave the Waterfront for the afternoon.

Accessibility

The cruise terminal is a modern building with parking and a short, flat route to the Waterfront. The Waterfront itself is largely level. Ask the cableway about step-free access to the cars before you go. Bo-Kaap streets are steep and cobbled. Kirstenbosch has paved paths in parts of the garden. Book an accessible vehicle in advance.

If it rains

Rain or wind usually closes the cableway. Spend the time at Zeitz MOCAA and the Two Oceans Aquarium, both at the Waterfront, or visit the Bo-Kaap Museum. Robben Island ferries may also be cancelled in rough weather.
