Agadir Cruise Port

Quick answerCruise ships dock in Agadir's large commercial and fishing port, about 4–6 km north of the city centre and beach; walking out is not practical. Take the port shuttle (a fee is charged) or a metered orange petit taxi from outside the port gates, about 10–15 minutes to the centre. Leave the beach or Souk El Had 75 minutes before all-aboard.

Transport: Port of Agadir (commercial port) to the beach promenade and city centre

Agadir was rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake, so it is a modern resort city rather than an old medina town. The day splits three ways: the hilltop ruins of the Agadir Oufella kasbah just above the port, Souk El Had, one of the largest markets in Morocco, and the long sandy beach with its promenade in front of the centre. The cruise berth is in an industrial port with almost no facilities, so you need a shuttle or taxi for everything. Souk El Had closes on Mondays, which decides the plan on a Monday call. A new dedicated cruise terminal is at the study stage, with no opening date.

Walkable? No

The centre is 4–6 km away through an industrial port, with heat and little shade. Use the shuttle or a petit taxi. Once at the beach, the promenade and the centre are easy on foot; Souk El Had and the kasbah need a taxi.

Where your ship docks

  • Port of Agadir cruise berth (commercial port) — Ships dock alongside in the commercial and fishing port at the north end of Agadir Bay; no tender. The berth has minimal facilities. Taxis wait just outside the port security gates. Sources give 4–6 km to the centre and beach. A new cruise terminal outside the current basin, near the marina, is being studied (contracts for studies expected late 2026); nothing has been built yet.

Port shuttle

A fee is charged; amount set per callAbout 10 minutes to downtown

A paid shuttle bus runs from the berth to a central drop-off; in 2025 one ship's shuttle dropped passengers downtown near the beach promenade. Check the drop-off point, the price and the last return time in your daily programme.

Petit taxi (orange)

Metered; insist the meter is switched onAbout 10–15 minutes to the centre, beach or Souk El Had

Orange petit taxis work within the city and take up to three passengers. Ask for the meter before you set off, or agree the fare first. Drivers may try to pick up other passengers. Pay in dirhams; some drivers take euros but give change in dirhams.

Grand taxi

Agree the price before departureVaries

Larger shared taxis for groups and for trips outside the city, such as the beaches around Taghazout to the north. Agree the fare, the waiting time and the return to the port in advance.

Cable car to Agadir Oufella

Check at the ticket officeAbout 12 minutes up, over 1.7 km

The cable car opened in 2022 and runs from the Pont Tildi station on Rue Echouhada, in the city, up to the kasbah. Take a taxi to the lower station, then ride up.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Leave the beach promenade, the city centre or Souk El Had 75 minutes before all-aboard, and be at the ship 60 minutes before. If you use the shuttle, take one that arrives at the port at least 60 minutes before all-aboard.

The run back is short, but you have to find a taxi, pass the port gate and possibly walk to the ship within the port. Afternoon traffic in the centre and the queue at the last shuttles add time. Souk El Had has many gates: note the one you used so you can find taxis quickly.

If you're running late

Take any petit taxi and ask for the port (le port, the cruise ship), showing your cruise card at the gate. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number in your daily programme at once.

A one-day plan for Agadir (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at 08:00, all-aboard is 17:30, and the call is not on a Monday (when Souk El Had is closed).

  1. 08:30 Ashore. Take a petit taxi from outside the port gates to the Agadir Oufella kasbah, about 10 minutes, or to the cable car's Pont Tildi station.

  2. 09:00 Agadir Oufella: the ruined walls and the view over the bay and port, before the heat.

  3. 10:15 Petit taxi to Souk El Had. Note the gate you enter by.

  4. 10:30 Souk El Had: spices, crafts, leather goods and produce. Haggle politely.

  5. 12:30 Petit taxi to the beach. Lunch at a restaurant on the promenade.

  6. 13:45 Walk the promenade and spend time on the beach.

  7. 16:15 Petit taxi or shuttle back to the port, 75 minutes before all-aboard.

  8. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Agadir's three main sights are close together and simple to do by petit taxi, so a ship's city tour adds little beyond a guide. Book the ship's excursion for Marrakech, about three hours away by road, or Taroudant, 88 km from the port; on these the ship waits for its own tours, and an independent delay would not be covered.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Agadir

Trying to walk from the ship into town.

Instead: The berth is in an industrial port 4–6 km from the centre. Take the shuttle or a petit taxi.

Planning Souk El Had on a Monday.

Instead: The souk is closed on Mondays. Swap in the kasbah, the museums and the beach.

Getting into a taxi without the meter on.

Instead: Ask for the meter before you move off, or agree the fare first.

Losing your bearings in Souk El Had.

Instead: It has many gates. Note the gate you used and a landmark near it.

Carrying only US dollars or cards.

Instead: Dollars are not widely accepted and souk stalls and taxis want cash. Get dirhams from a cash machine in the centre; the dirham cannot be taken out of Morocco, so spend it before you leave.

Safety: is Agadir safe for cruise passengers?

Agadir is a busy resort city and most visits pass without trouble. Pickpocketing and bag snatching are common in markets, on beaches and in crowded tourist areas, and thieves on motorbikes sometimes grab bags and jewellery, so keep valuables out of sight. Card fraud and ATM theft occur: use cash machines inside banks or businesses and cover the keypad. Women travelling alone may face verbal harassment. Foreign governments also advise that there is a threat of terrorism in Morocco, including at crowded tourist places. Emergency numbers: police 190, ambulance and fire 150, Gendarmerie Royale 177.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Unofficial guides: people posing as official guides approach tourists; an official guide carries a badge and authorisation from the local authority.
  • Guide commissions in the souk: guides often steer visitors to stalls that pay them commission, which pushes up prices. Agree any guide fee in advance.
  • Goods swapped at purchase: sellers may switch the item you chose for an inferior one; watch it being wrapped.
  • Card and ATM fraud: card skimming and theft at cash machines are reported; use ATMs inside banks and keep your card in sight.
  • Taxi meter not used: drivers may skip the meter or add passengers; ask for the meter at the start.

Emergency number: 190 (police), 150 (ambulance and fire)

Practical information

Crowds

Agadir handled about 91,000 cruise passengers in 2025, more than 50% up on the year before. Go to the kasbah as soon as you are ashore, before the heat, and reach the souk by mid-morning. The beach promenade is easiest in the early afternoon, when you can walk it at your own pace before the return.

Accessibility

Everything starts with a vehicle, so ask the ship whether the port shuttle is accessible, or book an accessible taxi in advance. The beach promenade is flat and has ramps. Agadir Oufella is on a hilltop with uneven ground; the cable car is the easier way up, but check access at the lower station. Souk El Had is flat but crowded, with narrow lanes.

If it rains

On a cool or wet day spend the time at the Agadir Memorial Museum and the Amazigh Museum, then Souk El Had (not Mondays).
