Messina Cruise Port to the City Centre: Bus, Taxi or Walk

Quick answer: Walk. Ships dock right at the city centre, and Piazza del Duomo is a flat 5–10 minutes on foot from the quays. Messina Centrale station is just under 700 m away, about 10 minutes. You do not need a bus or taxi for the centre. For Taormina, the regional train costs €5.50 one way and takes 39–76 minutes, and the Interbus IN09 coach costs €4.30 one way (2026). In Messina, start walking back 70 minutes before all-aboard. From Taormina, leave the upper town at least 3 hours before.

Where the cruise ships dock

Messina is not a tender port. Ships tie up at the cruise quays along Via Vittorio Emanuele II, the main waterfront road: Marconi, I Settembre, Colapesce and Vespri. The existing passenger terminal is on the I Settembre quay.

In 2026 the port is a building site. Work began on a new cruise terminal on the Colapesce quay, and ships due at I Settembre have been moved to the Marconi quay during the works. Routes out of some berths may be longer than usual. Check your daily programme for your berth and follow the port signs.

Walking to the city centre

This is the answer for almost everyone. The walk from the quays to Piazza del Duomo is flat and takes 5–10 minutes, depending on the berth. There you find the cathedral, its astronomical clock and the Orion Fountain. The Catalani church and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele III arcade are a few minutes further.

The one central sight up a hill is the Sacrario di Cristo Re, a 15–20 minute climb from the centre. The waterfront road beside the port carries heavy traffic, so cross at the lights.

The clock show starts at 12:00 every day and lasts just under 15 minutes. You watch it from the public square, so it is free. The square fills from about 11:45, so arrive by 11:50.

Taxi

You do not need a taxi for the centre. It earns its place for the MuMe museum, north of the centre along the waterfront, or for Torre Faro and Capo Peloro, about 14 km north.

  • ·Where to board: the rank on Via Vittorio Emanuele II at Largo Minutoli, during the port works.
  • ·Fare: agree it before you set off. Some drivers at the port offer Taormina trips at a high price without a written fare. Agree the full price, waiting time and return time first.
  • ·To Taormina: 45–55 minutes. Private transfers start from €144 per vehicle for up to 3 people (2026).

Train and bus to Taormina

No bus is needed into Messina itself. The trains and buses that matter go to Taormina, the classic trip from here. Both leave from Messina Centrale, about 10 minutes' walk from the quays.

Regional train (Trenitalia)

  • ·Cost: €5.50 one way regional; €8.50–10 Intercity (2026).
  • ·Time: 39–76 minutes regional, most 45–65; Intercity about 34 minutes.
  • ·Frequency: about 22 direct trains a day, one or two an hour but unevenly spaced.
  • ·Paying: a digital ticket locks to the booked train at departure time and cannot be changed after.
  • ·Gotcha: Taormina-Giardini station is at sea level and the town is about 200 m higher, so do not walk up. The "Taormina Link" ticket adds the ASM local bus for €2, €7.50 in total each way (2026).

Interbus coach IN09

  • ·Cost: €4.30 one way; €6.80 return (2026).
  • ·Time: 50 minutes on fast runs; 1h15–1h45 on others.
  • ·Where to board: Piazza della Repubblica, in front of Messina Centrale. It arrives at the Taormina bus terminal on Via Pirandello, in the upper town, so there is no climb.
  • ·Gotcha: fewer runs than the train. On a sample August 2026 weekday there were eight departures from Messina, and the last useful afternoon return reached Messina at 17:20. Check booking.interbus.it.

When to head back

If you stay in Messina, the ship expects you 60 minutes before all-aboard. The Duomo is 5–10 minutes away, so be walking back 70 minutes before.

From Taormina, the local bus down, a train of up to 76 minutes and the walk from Messina Centrale add up, and the ship wants you back 90 minutes early on a train-dependent trip. Leave the upper town at least 3 hours before all-aboard. On the August 2026 timetable nothing left Taormina-Giardini for Messina between 09:30 and 11:03, and after the 12:16 Intercity the next train was at 13:52. Pick the train before your last workable one.

If a train is cancelled, check the Interbus IN09 return from the Taormina bus terminal, and call the port agent number in your daily programme.

Common mistakes

  • ·Heading for the old taxi rank during the 2026 works. Taxis pick up at Largo Minutoli.
  • ·Assuming trains back from Taormina run every half hour. There are gaps of 90 minutes or more around midday.
  • ·Walking up from Taormina-Giardini station. Use the local bus or the Interbus.
  • ·Expecting a digital train ticket to work on a later train. Change it before departure, or buy a new one.
  • ·Trying to fit the clock show and Taormina into one day. The show is at 12:00 only. Choose one, unless your ship stays late.
