Circumvesuviana Train from Naples Cruise Ship: Step-by-Step Guide
The Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Pompeii costs €3.30 each way and takes about 35 minutes (2026). Ship excursion prices vary by line, so check your cruise planner. This is a step-by-step guide from the gangway to the Pompeii entrance and back.
What is the Circumvesuviana?
A regional commuter railway run by EAV, linking Naples with the towns around Vesuvius, including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It is a normal public service, not a tourist train. Trains are often crowded and only the newer ones have air conditioning.
Step 1 — From the cruise terminal to Garibaldi
Ships dock at the Stazione Marittima on Molo Angioino, in the city centre. Molo Beverello next door is the ferry pier for Capri and Sorrento, not the cruise terminal.
Walk a few minutes to Municipio metro and take Line 1 to Garibaldi, about 5 minutes. Single and 90-minute tickets cost about €1.30–1.80; check the price at the machine.
Step 2 — Find the Circumvesuviana platforms
At Napoli Garibaldi, the Circumvesuviana uses underground platforms, usually platform 3. Access is by stairs only. You can also board at Porta Nolana, the first stop on the line.
Step 3 — Ticket and validation
- ·Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri: €3.30 one way, €6.60 return (2026).
- ·Pay: tap a contactless card or phone in and out at the gates, or buy a paper ticket.
- ·Validate: stamp a paper ticket in the yellow machine before boarding. Fines for unvalidated tickets are around €50.
Step 4 — Board the Sorrento line
Take a train on the Sorrento line. Trains run about every 30 minutes. The ride from Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi is about 35 minutes.
Get off at Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri. Not Pompei Santuario.
Campania Express: a tourist service on the same line with reserved seats and air conditioning. €18.30 one way, including a €15 supplement (2026), about 30 minutes. It runs from mid-March to mid-October with only four departures each way, so fit the day around its timetable.
Step 5 — Enter Pompeii
The Porta Marina entrance is about 50 m from the station.
Tickets (2026): €20 basic, €25 Pompeii+ with the suburban villas. Free under 18 and on the first Sunday of the month. Tickets are named and limited to 20,000 a day in timed windows from mid-March to mid-October. Buy only from the official seller (Vivaticket via pompeiisites.org). Touts' tickets may not scan.
Allow about 3 hours on site. Bring water and a hat; there is little shade.
Return timing — the most important section
The rule: catch a train back from Pompeii no later than 3 hours before all-aboard. The train is about 35 minutes, the metro and walk from Garibaldi to the terminal add about 25 minutes, and trains run only every 30 minutes. Strikes and breakdowns on the Circumvesuviana are not rare.
| All-aboard | Latest train from Pompei Scavi |
|---|---|
| 17:00 | 14:00 |
| 17:30 | 14:30 |
| 18:00 | 15:00 |
| 19:00 | 16:00 |
If a train is cancelled, take the next one. If the line is down, take a licensed taxi from Pompei Scavi and agree the fare first. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late. Check EAV notices for strikes the day before.
Circumvesuviana vs ship excursion
| Ship excursion | Circumvesuviana DIY (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | Coach included; price varies by line | €6.60 return, plus metro |
| Pompeii entry | Included, often with a guide | €20 basic, €25 Pompeii+ |
| Typical morning | Check your cruise planner | About €27 |
| Pace at site | Group pace | Your own pace |
The ship's coach is worth it in July and August heat, on a rail strike day, for anyone who struggles with stairs and crowded trains, or if you want Pompeii and Vesuvius together.
FAQ
Is the Circumvesuviana safe for tourists? Yes, with care. Pickpockets work around Garibaldi station and on crowded carriages. Keep bags zipped and in front.
Is it accessible? Not really. Garibaldi's Circumvesuviana platforms are reported to have stairs only, trains have steps, and Pompeii's streets are rough basalt with high kerbs. A ship coach tour or an adapted taxi is the realistic choice for limited mobility.
What if the Circumvesuviana is delayed? Trains run every 30 minutes and can be cancelled. That is why the rule is to be on a return train three hours before all-aboard.
