Cartagena, Spain Cruise Port to the Old Town: Walk, Lift, Bus or Taxi

Quick answer: Walk. This is Cartagena in the Region of Murcia, Spain, not Cartagena in Colombia. Ships dock at the cruise quay on the Muelle de Alfonso XII, and Cartagena is not a tender port. The Plaza del Ayuntamiento and the Roman Theatre Museum are across one road, about 3 minutes on foot (0.3 km). The Molinete Forum, the Punic Wall and the panoramic lift to Concepción Castle are all within about 15 minutes. The lift costs €2 alone or €6 with castle entry, and the Puerto de Culturas tourist bus costs €8 (2026). You only need a taxi to leave town, for example to Calblanque beach. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Where the cruise ships dock

Cruise quay (Muelle de Cruceros), Muelle de Alfonso XII. The main cruise berth, 344 m long, between the marina and the Real Club de Regatas. It has a step-free exit, a taxi rank, coach parking and an information point. The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is across one road, about 3 minutes on foot. The port usually handles one cruise ship at a time here.

Muelle de la Curra. Used occasionally when a second ship is in, on the south side of the commercial port. It is not a walk to town, so you need a shuttle; the transfer is short and the cost varies by line. Check your daily programme to see which quay your ship uses.

Walking to the old town

From the main cruise quay, walking is free and is how most passengers do the day. Cross the waterfront road to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

  • ·Plaza del Ayuntamiento and the Roman Theatre Museum: about 3 minutes. The museum is on the square.
  • ·Calle Mayor: the main pedestrian street, running inland from the square, lined with modernist façades.
  • ·Molinete Roman Forum, Punic Wall and the panoramic lift on Calle Gisbert: all within about 15 minutes.

The old town is flat. The castle and the Molinete hill are steep, but the lift takes you up to the castle.

Gotchas. Concepción hill and the Molinete site have little shade, so carry water in summer. Keep bags zipped on Calle Mayor on cruise days.

Panoramic lift to Concepción Castle

The Ascensor Panorámico is a glass lift from Calle Gisbert to the top of Concepción hill, a 45 m rise in under a minute.

  • ·Cost: €2 single ticket, or €6 with castle entry (2026). The castle alone is €5. The lift is free if you take the castle on the à la carte pass.
  • ·Where to board: Calle Gisbert. The base is also the entrance to the Civil War Shelter Museum (€4, €3 reduced), so pair the two.
  • ·Capacity: the cabin takes 8 people, including one wheelchair user.
  • ·Free entry: the castle is free on Tuesdays in the last 2 hours.

Puerto de Culturas tourist bus

The tourist bus is useful if walking hills is a problem.

  • ·Cost: €8 (2026).
  • ·When it runs: Tuesday to Sunday from mid-March to early December, with hourly departures and a midday break. From 9 December to 14 March it takes groups only.
  • ·Not on Mondays, so check your call day.

Taxi

Taxis wait near the quay when ships are in. They are metered; agree the fare before you set off on a longer trip. You do not need one for the old town. A taxi only makes sense for trips out of town, such as Calblanque.

Calblanque is a natural protected beach about 25 minutes by road via the RM-12 (about 20 km). There is no direct public transport and no bus back to the port. It has no lifeguards, toilets, showers or restaurant. In peak summer private cars are restricted and a booked shuttle bus runs from Los Belones. Arrange the return taxi before you go down to the sand.

When to head back

The rule in Cartagena: be back at the quay 60 minutes before all-aboard. From the Roman Theatre Museum or the Plaza del Ayuntamiento it is about 3 minutes to the ship. From Concepción Castle via the lift, or from the Molinete Forum, allow 15–20 minutes. For a 17:30 all-aboard, leave the castle or the Forum by 16:10. From Calblanque you depend on a taxi on a two-lane coast road, so leave the beach at least 2 hours before all-aboard.

Common mistakes

  • ·Taking a ship shuttle or taxi into town from the main quay. The old town is across the road. Walk.
  • ·Walking up to Concepción Castle in the heat. Take the panoramic lift from Calle Gisbert; it is included with the castle on the pass.
  • ·Planning the Roman Theatre on a Monday or a Sunday afternoon. It is closed on Mondays and shuts at 14:00 on Sundays. Outside July to mid-September most other sites also close on Mondays.
  • ·Buying separate tickets for four or five sites. The five-museum à la carte pass is €20 and counts the Theatre as two museums.
  • ·Heading to Calblanque without a plan for the return. There is no bus back to the port. Book the return taxi in advance or skip it on a short call.
