Trapani Cruise Port

Quick answerCruise ships berth in Trapani's harbour, in front of the old town, so you can walk into the pedestrian historic centre without transport. For Erice, take an ATM bus or a taxi to the cable car's lower station and ride up in about 10 minutes (€15 return in 2026). Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard from the old town, and leave Erice by 15:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard.

Transport: Port of Trapani (cruise and passenger terminal) to the historic centre

Trapani sits on a narrow spit at the western tip of Sicily, with the port along one side and the old town filling the point. The historic centre is mostly pedestrian and compact, which makes it an easy port to explore on foot. The two classic trips are up to the hilltop town of Erice by cable car and out to Favignana in the Egadi Islands by hydrofoil. Both work on a cruise day, but each has a catch: the cable car opens only at 14:00 on Mondays and closes for maintenance in November, and hydrofoils depend on the sea.

Walkable? Yes

Ships berth in front of the old town, and the historic centre is mostly pedestrian and flat. Via Garibaldi, Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Via Torrearsa are the main streets. The exact walk depends on your berth.

Where your ship docks

  • Cruise and passenger terminal (Molo Sanità area) — Small terminal next to the Fast Ferry Terminal, in front of the old town. It has a coach park, a self-service café, newspapers and toilets. Egadi ferries also use the Sanità quay.

ATM bus to the cable car

90-minute ATM ticket; buy before boarding where possibleBus every 30–35 min on weekdays

On weekdays take line 21 from the bus station (Piazza Montalto) to the Funivia stop in Via F.lli Aiuto. On Sundays and holidays use line 201 or 202; line 202 runs Funivia–Ospedale–Spiaggia–Porto.

Trapani–Erice cable car

€9 single, €15 return; ages 3–16 €2.50 single, €4 return (2026)About 10 min each way

Climbs from about 40 m to 703 m. Opens at 14:00 on Mondays all year for maintenance. From 21 September to 2 November 2026: Tue–Thu 08:30–20:00, Fri 08:30–23:00, weekends 09:00–24:00. Closed 3 November to 4 December 2026. Tickets can be bought online. From the top station it is an uphill walk into Erice.

Hydrofoil to Favignana (Egadi Islands)

From €11.83 one way (2026)About 30 min by hydrofoil; about 1 hour by Siremar ferry

Liberty Lines runs frequent hydrofoils in season; Siremar runs slower car ferries all year. Book ahead from June to September. Sailings can be cancelled in rough weather.

Taxi

Agree the fare before you set offAbout 10 min to the salt pans

The only practical way to the Trapani and Paceco salt pans, about 5 km away with no public transport. Also the fallback for the cable car's lower station or Erice when the cable car is shut.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard (16:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard). Leave the Erice cable car top station by 15:00, and be on a hydrofoil leaving Favignana by 14:30.

The old town is close to the ship, so the risk is low for a town day. Erice adds a walk to the top station, the cable car ride and a bus or taxi back to the port. Favignana depends on hydrofoils that can be full or cancelled when the sea gets up, so take an early return and keep a later sailing as a backup.

If you're running late

From the cable car lower station or Erice, take a taxi to the port. If a Favignana sailing is cancelled or you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme immediately.

Ships normally berth alongside. The port has a cruise and passenger terminal, opened in December 2021 next to the Fast Ferry Terminal; the port authority places it on the Molo Sanità. Dredging and quay works reported in 2026 brought most of the inner basin to about 10 m, aimed at larger cruise ships. One older port guide reports that the largest ships anchored and tendered to a floating pier in the town centre; check your daily programme.

A one-day plan for Trapani (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at 08:00, all-aboard is 17:30, and it is not a Monday (the cable car opens at 14:00 on Mondays).

  1. 08:30 Walk off the ship and through the old town to the bus station in Piazza Montalto; or take a taxi straight to the cable car's lower station.

  2. 09:00 Bus line 21 (weekdays) to the Funivia stop, then the cable car up to Erice, about 10 minutes.

  3. 09:45 Walk up into Erice: the Chiesa Madre near Porta Trapani, the lanes of the medieval town and the Castello di Venere viewpoint over the salt pans and the Egadi Islands.

  4. 12:15 Cable car back down and bus or taxi to the old town.

  5. 13:00 Lunch: fish couscous at Dar El Medina, or rianata at Pizzeria Calvino.

  6. 14:15 Old town walk: Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Chiesa del Purgatorio with the Misteri, Via Garibaldi and the Mura di Tramontana seafront walls.

  7. 15:45 Granita at Antica Pasticceria Colicchia, then walk back towards the port.

  8. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Skip the ship's tour for Trapani itself: the old town is next to the berth and easy to explore alone. Erice is simple by cable car on most days, but on a Monday morning or between 3 November and 4 December the cable car is shut, and a ship's coach or a taxi is the sensible way up. Book the ship's tour for Segesta, Selinunte or Marsala, which are too far for an easy DIY return.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Trapani

Planning Erice by cable car on a Monday morning.

Instead: The cable car opens at 14:00 on Mondays. Go to Erice by taxi or ship's tour, or do the old town first.

Counting on the cable car in November.

Instead: It is closed from 3 November to 4 December 2026. Use a taxi or the ship's tour.

Taking a late hydrofoil back from Favignana.

Instead: Be on a sailing that leaves by 14:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard, so a cancelled or full boat still leaves you a later option.

Visiting churches in the early afternoon.

Instead: Many close around midday; the Purgatorio church is shut from 12:00 to 16:00. See it in the morning.

Trying to reach the salt pans by bus.

Instead: There is no public transport to the salt pans; take a taxi and agree the fare first.

Safety: is Trapani safe for cruise passengers?

Trapani is a quiet, low-risk port for visitors. Take normal care with bags in crowds around the port and on buses. In Erice the stone streets become slippery in rain, and the hilltop is often much cooler and windier than the coast, so bring a layer. Cross carefully on the busy port roads.

Emergency number: 112

Practical information

Crowds

Trapani rarely feels crowded outside Easter week. Erice and the cable car are busiest in summer and at weekends, when the cable car runs into the night. Go up early on a weekday and come down by midday. On Favignana, visit Cala Rossa in the morning.

Accessibility

The old town is flat and largely pedestrian, which suits wheelchair users better than most Sicilian ports, though paving can be uneven. The cable car is free for wheelchair users (a companion pays full fare); Erice itself is hilly and cobbled, with an uphill walk from the top station. Hydrofoil boarding involves steps and is harder for wheelchair users.

If it rains

Erice is often in cloud when it rains, and its streets turn slippery. Stay in Trapani: the Museo Pepoli, the cathedral, the Chiesa del Purgatorio and the Torre di Ligny museum, with lunch in the old town. Hydrofoils to the Egadi may be cancelled in rough weather.
