Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Ships dock at the Isola Bianca quays, the island's main ferry and cruise port, and you cannot walk across the port area: a free port shuttle takes you to the Stazione Marittima at the port exit. From there the centre around Corso Umberto is under 2 km, by foot, ASPO bus 9 (€1 if bought before boarding, 2026) or taxi. Be back at the terminal 60 minutes before all-aboard, and 90 if you go to the Costa Smeralda.

Olbia is Sardinia's main gateway in the north-east, and its port is built for ferries as much as cruise ships. Passengers cannot walk through the Isola Bianca port area, so the first part of the day is the port shuttle and the run into town. The centre is small and low-key: Corso Umberto, the Romanesque basilica of San Simplicio and an archaeological museum of Roman shipwrecks on an islet by the old port. Most passengers come for what lies outside: sandy beaches such as Pittulongu close by, and the Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo about 30 km to the north, where summer traffic is the main risk to your return.

When to leave Olbia

Times include the way back
  • Corso Umberto (Olbia centre)Bus 9 or taxi to the Stazione Marittima, then the port shuttle 16:30
  • Archaeological Museum (old port)Bus 9 from the town hall stop or taxi, then the port shuttle 16:30
  • Pittulongu beachLine 40 Spiagge Express about 15 min, then bus 9 or taxi to the port 16:15
  • Porto Cervo (Costa Smeralda)Taxi, about 30 km; 45–55 min in July and August 15:05

Times are port time, the time your phone shows ashore.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Isola Bianca quays and Stazione Marittima (maritime station) · 2 km to the centre

Isola Bianca has ten quays serving ferries, ro-ro ships and cruise ships. Passengers may not walk through the port area, so a free shuttle bus runs between the ship and the maritime station at the port exit. The station has a bar, restaurant, tobacconist, ticket offices and a port information desk, and a 24-hour first-aid service in summer. Security screening is on the way back to the ship. The centre is under 2 km away.

Can you walk? Partly. The quay itself is not walkable: take the free port shuttle to the maritime station. From the station the centre is under 2 km by road. Fit walkers can do it, but port traffic and summer heat make the bus or a taxi the easier choice. Once in the centre, Corso Umberto, San Simplicio and the old port are all walkable.

Getting to town

Free port shuttle

FreeA few minutes

Runs inside the port area between the ship's berth and the Stazione Marittima at the port exit. Walking across the port is not allowed.

ASPO city bus 9

€1 single, €1.50 if bought on board (2026)Short ride

Links the maritime station with the railway station via Corso Umberto I. Line 9 also stops in front of the town hall, near the Archaeological Museum. Buy tickets before boarding to pay the lower fare.

Taxi

Varies; agree before setting offShort ride to the centre

Taxi ranks are at the port, on Corso Umberto and at the airport. For the Costa Smeralda, agree the fare and a return time in advance; regular taxis to Porto Cervo from the airport area cost about €90–120 one way (2026).

ASPO line 40 Spiagge Express (summer)

€5 return (2026)About 15 min

Summer-only bus from the centre to Pittulongu beach, roughly every 30 minutes.

ARST regional buses

Distance-based faresVaries

Regional buses leave from the square in front of the maritime station. Services to resort towns are less frequent than city buses and timings often suit cruise passengers poorly; check the ARST timetable before relying on one.

When to head back

Be back at the Stazione Marittima 60 minutes before all-aboard (16:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard); 90 minutes if you have been to the Costa Smeralda.

You still need to clear security and ride the port shuttle back to the ship, and ferry departures can make the port roads busy. Porto Cervo is about 30 km from Olbia; in July and August the drive can take 45–55 minutes because of afternoon traffic, so leave the coast early.

If you are running late: Take a taxi from the rank on Corso Umberto straight to the port. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Where people go wrong: Treating Porto Cervo as a short hop and leaving the coast too late in afternoon summer traffic.

Olbia is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

In March 2024, eight Norwegian Dawn passengers on a private tour came back to the pier in São Tomé more than an hour after all-aboard. Getting back on board took six days, seven countries and over $5,000. The details

On your own or a ship excursion?

Skip the ship tour for Olbia itself and for a beach close to town: the port shuttle, bus 9 and the summer beach bus are cheap and simple. The ship's tour is worth it for the Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, La Maddalena or Tavolara. Public buses to the resorts are infrequent, taxis are expensive, and summer traffic on the coast road can turn a 30 km drive into close to an hour, so a tour with a guaranteed return removes the main risk of the day.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to walk off the ship across the port.

Walking in the port area is not allowed. Take the free shuttle to the Stazione Marittima first.

  • Assuming the Costa Smeralda is a short hop.

Porto Cervo is about 30 km away and the drive can take 45–55 minutes in summer. Book a tour or leave the coast early.

  • Relying on regional buses to resorts for the return.

ARST services are infrequent and often badly timed for cruise calls. Use a taxi with an agreed pick-up or a ship's tour.

  • Buying the bus 9 ticket on board.

It costs €1.50 on board against €1 bought in advance (2026). Buy at the station or a tobacconist.

  • Planning the Archaeological Museum for the afternoon or a Monday.

It closes at lunchtime and on Sundays and Mondays. Go in the morning, Tuesday to Saturday.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Olbia is a working port city and safe for visitors. Take care on the port roads, which carry heavy ferry and lorry traffic, and do not walk inside the port area. In summer the heat is the main problem on the walk into town and at the beaches, so carry water and sun protection. Check beach flags and sea conditions before swimming. Use licensed taxis from the ranks rather than unlicensed transport offers. Emergency number: 112.
Accessibility
Olbia is a docked port and the free port shuttle connects the ship with the terminal; ask the ship about accessible transfers on the day. The centre around Corso Umberto is flat. The Archaeological Museum is on an islet reached on foot from the old port; check access by phone on +39 340 3560742 during opening hours.
If it rains
Spend the morning in the Archaeological Museum, which is large enough for a long visit, then San Simplicio and San Paolo, with lunch and cafés on and around Corso Umberto. Skip the beaches and the coastal drive.
Crowds
Olbia is a very busy ferry port as well as a cruise port. In peak season (June to September) go to the beaches early in the morning. The Costa Smeralda roads are slowest in the afternoon in high summer, so do the coast in the morning and town in the afternoon, not the other way round.

Olbia cruise port FAQ

Is Olbia a tender port?

No. Ships dock at the Isola Bianca quays, and a free port shuttle takes you to the maritime station.

Is Olbia walkable from the cruise port?

Partly. You must take the free shuttle across the port first. From the maritime station the centre is under 2 km, but most people take bus 9 or a taxi.

How do I get from Olbia cruise port to the town centre?

Free port shuttle to the Stazione Marittima, then ASPO bus 9 along Corso Umberto (€1 in advance, €1.50 on board, 2026), a taxi, or a walk of under 2 km.

Can I visit Porto Cervo from Olbia cruise port?

Yes, but allow time. It is about 30 km away and the drive takes 45–55 minutes in July and August. A taxi costs about €90–120 each way (2026), so a ship's tour is often simpler.

Beaches near Olbia cruise port?

Pittulongu is the closest, about 15 minutes by the summer line 40 bus (€5 return, 2026). Le Saline, Lido del Sole and Porto Istana are about 10 km south by taxi.

What can I do in Olbia in one day from a cruise ship?

The Archaeological Museum, San Simplicio, Corso Umberto and a swim at Pittulongu, or a tour to the Costa Smeralda or Tavolara.

Is Olbia safe?

Yes. Take care with port traffic and summer heat, and use licensed taxis.

  • San Simplicio ticket price and Sunday hours.
  • Bus 9 frequency and journey time.
  • Taxi fare from the port to the centre or to nearby beaches.
  • Typical all-aboard time at Olbia.
