Málaga cruise port to the city centre: bus, taxi or walk

ElkePublished 2026-10-177 min readUpdated for 2026 cruise season

Quick Answer

Málaga is not a tender port; every ship docks. From the Levante terminals, where most large ships berth, it is about 2 km and 25–30 minutes on foot to the old town, flat and paved, along Muelle Uno and the Palmeral gardens. When a ship is at Levante, a port bus runs to the Plaza de la Marina entrance in 5–10 minutes, about every 15–20 minutes. Small ships at the Palmeral terminal are about 5 minutes from the cathedral. Málaga cruise port to the city centre: bus, taxi or walk

Quick answer: Málaga is not a tender port; every ship docks. Start walking back from the old town 75 minutes before all-aboard: 16:15 for a 17:30 all-aboard.

Where cruise ships dock in Málaga

There are two places your ship can berth. Check your daily programme or the ship's app to see which one.

Levante terminals (eastern pier, Muelle de Levante). Two terminals on the eastern breakwater with four berths for ships of any size. Most large ships berth here. It is about 2 km from the centre. The terminal buildings have shops, toilets and tourist information. When a ship is at Levante, the port runs a bus between the terminals and the pedestrian entrance at Plaza de la Marina, at the edge of the old town.

Palmeral de las Sorpresas terminal (Muelle 2). One berth for smaller ships, in the inner harbour on the waterfront promenade. It is about 0.5 km from the centre, and the cathedral and the start of the old town are about 5 minutes on foot.

If you are at Palmeral, you can stop reading here and walk. The rest of this guide is mostly for Levante.

Walking from the ship via Muelle Uno

  • ·Cost: free
  • ·Time: 25–30 minutes from Levante; about 5 minutes from Palmeral
  • ·Distance: about 2 km from Levante
  • ·Surface: flat and paved

From the Levante terminals, walk west along the pier and through Muelle Uno, the shopping and restaurant quay. Carry on along the Palmeral de las Sorpresas gardens to Plaza de la Marina, at the edge of the old town. There are cafés and some shade on the way. It is the simplest way into Málaga.

The route is flat and paved all the way. The Alcazaba and Gibralfaro, on the hill above the old town, are steep with uneven paths.

Gotchas:

  • ·Allow longer than 30 minutes in heat or when several ships are in, which is common in spring and autumn.
  • ·Carry water in summer.

The port bus to Plaza de la Marina

  • ·Cost: check the fare at the terminal
  • ·Time: 5–10 minutes
  • ·Frequency: about every 15–20 minutes
  • ·Where to board: at the Levante terminals
  • ·Where it drops you: the Plaza de la Marina pedestrian entrance, at the edge of the old town

This bus runs only when a ship is berthed at Levante. It links the terminals with Plaza de la Marina and nothing else. It is wheelchair accessible.

It is the right choice in summer heat, or for anyone who struggles with a 2 km walk. We have not confirmed the fare, so check it at the terminal.

Taxi

A taxi is your fallback, not your main plan. If you are short of time in town, take a taxi from a rank near Plaza de la Marina or the Alameda to the terminal. We have not checked a taxi fare or a typical journey time for this short ride, so we do not quote one here.

EMT city bus line 35 (for Gibralfaro, not the port)

EMT Málaga line 35 links the centre with Gibralfaro Castle, about every 30 minutes, and saves a steep 20-minute climb. A single costs €1.40 (2026), with free transfers within one hour. A rise to €1.50 was proposed in July 2026 but was not in force when we checked.

When to head back

The rule for Málaga: start walking back from the old town 75 minutes before all-aboard. The walk from the cathedral area to the Levante terminals takes 25–30 minutes, longer in heat or crowds, and you need to clear terminal security.

If you are at the Palmeral berth, 65 minutes is enough. From Gibralfaro Castle, allow 110 minutes: about 20 minutes to walk down, then about 30 minutes to Levante.

If you go to Granada, be on a train or bus that reaches Málaga at least 90 minutes before all-aboard. There are only about three direct trains a day each way.

You can plan your day with your own all-aboard time and get leave-by times for each part of the city.

Common mistakes

  • ·Underestimating the walk back to a Levante berth. It is 25–30 minutes from the old town. Leave 75 minutes before all-aboard or use the port bus.
  • ·Climbing to Gibralfaro in the midday heat. Go early, or take EMT line 35 up and walk down.
  • ·Planning Granada on an 8-hour call. Travel alone eats 3–4 hours. Without a long call and a midday Nasrid Palaces slot, take the ship tour or stay in Málaga.
  • ·Paying in your home currency. Card terminals and ATMs may offer to charge you in your home currency. Always choose to pay in euros.
