Gibraltar Cruise Port to Town: Walk, Bus or Taxi
Where the cruise ships dock
Ships berth at the Gibraltar Cruise Terminal on the North Mole (Western Arm), at the northern end of the port. There is no tender.
The terminal is a converted warehouse that opens only when a ship is in. Taxis and tour minibuses wait outside. On busy days the port sometimes runs a paid shuttle minibus into town. The government invited bids in January 2026 to refurbish and run the terminal, but no works dates are set, so expect the building as it is.
Walking to Casemates Square and Main Street
Walking is the simplest way into town, and it is free.
- Distance: about 1.5 km to Casemates Square.
- Time: about 15 minutes.
- Route: leave the terminal and follow the waterfront road towards town. It is flat and easy to follow.
- Where you arrive: Casemates Square, the old barracks square at the northern end of Main Street.
Main Street is pedestrianised and flat, running south from Casemates to the southern gates. Walk it early, before the tour groups arrive from the ships. The walk from the terminal and Main Street itself are step-free.
Gotchas. The Upper Rock is a different matter. It is steep roads and steps, and at least two hours on foot to the top areas. Do not assume you can stroll up after lunch.
Port shuttle minibus
On some busy cruise days the port runs a shuttle minibus into town for a small fee. The price is not published, and it does not run every day. Most people do not need it, given the short, flat walk.
Taxi Rock tours
With the cable car closed, a taxi tour is now the main way up the Rock.
- Where to board: the rank outside the cruise terminal, or the taxi ranks in town.
- Vehicles: shared Rock tours in minibuses of up to eight people.
- Cost: the Gibraltar Taxi Association set price is £50 per person including the £30 Upper Rock ticket (2026), for tours from the frontier. Confirm the price at the terminal rank before you get in.
- Time: 1–3 hours depending on the tour.
- What you see: tours typically cover the Pillars of Hercules viewpoint, St Michael's Cave, the Apes' Den and the Great Siege Tunnels, all inside the Nature Reserve.
Gotchas. Before you get in, confirm whether the £30 reserve ticket is in the price and when the tour finishes. On a multi-ship day, every tour uses the same narrow roads and the same few stops, so book a morning slot that ends well before 15:45. Keep food and loose bags packed away near the macaques. Feeding them is illegal, with a £500 fine, and they grab.
If you have limited mobility, a taxi tour is the only practical way up. Ask at the rank for a vehicle that suits you. St Michael's Cave and the Great Siege Tunnels involve steps and uneven floors.
Walking up the Rock
You can walk up from town, but allow at least two hours to reach the top areas, on steep roads shared with tour minibuses. Keep to the edge. The Nature Reserve ticket still applies to walkers: £30 adult, £22 child aged 5–11, under 5 free (2026). Buy it at the Jews' Gate, Moorish Castle, Devil's Gap or Market Place bus station offices, or online. In summer take water and a hat.
Bus to Europa Point
Gibraltar has two bus operators, the Gibraltar Bus Company and Citibus.
- Route: Route 2 runs from Market Place, by Casemates, to Europa Point at the southern tip.
- Ticket: the Hopper day ticket costs £8.80 adult and £5.50 child (2026). It is valid 08:00–21:00 on all routes of both operators.
- How to pay: a ticket from one operator is not valid on the other unless you hold a Hopper, so the Hopper is the simple choice if you plan more than one ride.
- Crowds: Route 2 is busy at weekends.
At Europa Point you get the 1841 Trinity lighthouse, the Ibrahim al-Ibrahim Mosque, the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe and the view across the strait to Morocco. Allow 1–1.5 hours including the bus.
Taxi in town
Taxis wait at ranks in town and can reach the terminal in minutes. They are your fallback if you are running late, or a way back from Europa Point. Agree the fare before you set off.
Cable car
Closed. It made its last trips in January 2026 and is being fully rebuilt, with reopening expected in 2027. Ignore any older guide that tells you to take it.

When to head back
The rule in Gibraltar: leave Casemates Square by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard, which is 90 minutes before. The walk to the terminal is about 15 minutes, and you want to be on board by 16:30. Finish any Rock tour back in town by 15:45 (105 minutes before), and leave Europa Point by 15:15 (135 minutes before), since you need the bus or a taxi back through town before you walk.
| All-aboard | Leave Casemates / Main Street by | Rock tour back in town by | Leave Europa Point by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 17:00 | 15:30 | 15:15 | 14:45 |

If you are running late, take a taxi from a rank in town and call the port agent number in your daily programme. The cruise terminal's own lines are +350 200 47671 and +350 200 47670.
For sights, food and a full day plan, see the full Gibraltar port guide, or plan your day with your own all-aboard time.
Common mistakes
- Planning the day around the cable car. It is closed for rebuilding until 2027. Book a taxi Rock tour or allow at least two hours to walk up.
- Assuming the Upper Rock is free if you walk. The £30 adult Nature Reserve ticket (2026) applies to walkers too.
- Taking a late Rock tour slot on a multi-ship day. Book a morning tour and be back in town by 15:45 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
- Paying in euros. Many shops accept them, but at a poor rate. Use sterling or a card.
- Carrying food openly near the macaques. Pack it away. Feeding them carries a £500 fine.
