Why ship excursions cost what they cost — and what you're actually paying for.
A cruise ship generates revenue from three primary sources: cabin bookings, onboard spending (drinks, spa, casino), and port excursions.
Excursions are unusual in the revenue mix because the cruise line doesn't provide the service — they sell it. A local operator in Naples provides the Pompeii visit. The cruise line adds the booking system, the branding, and the guarantee — and takes a significant margin.
The result: the same Pompeii experience costs €8.50 locally and €164 through the ship. The difference — €155.50 — is the cost of the intermediary.
Ship price vs DIY cost — 8 major ports
Cruise lines don't set excursion prices based on the cost of the service. They set them based on willingness to pay under conditions of information asymmetry.
A passenger on a ship has limited information: unfamiliar city, unfamiliar language, time pressure, and a fear of missing the ship. Under these conditions, paying €164 for what locals provide for €8 seems rational.
Remove the information asymmetry — give the passenger the train time, the price, the return route, and the confirmed timing — and the £164 product becomes indefensible.
This is what PortTrip does.
How much do cruise lines make from excursions?
Cruise excursions are among the highest-margin ancillary revenue streams in the industry. With an average markup of 312% and millions of passengers per year, excursion revenue runs into billions annually for major cruise lines. The economics depend on passengers not knowing that local alternatives exist at 3–15× lower prices.
Are cruise excursion prices negotiable?
No — cruise line excursion prices are fixed and non-negotiable. The alternative is not to negotiate but to book the equivalent locally, where prices are typically 70–90% lower. Local tour operators near cruise terminals often offer identical routes for a fraction of the ship price.
