Stockholm cruise port to Gamla Stan: walk, bus or train

Quick answer: It depends on your berth. From Stadsgården, walk about 2 km (20–30 minutes, all flat) along the water to Slussen and over to Gamla Stan. From Skeppsbron you are already in the old town. From Frihamnen, about 4 km out, take SL bus 1 or a taxi (10–15 minutes). From Nynäshamn, 60 km south, walk 15–20 minutes to the station and take commuter train line 43 to Stockholm City in about 60 minutes. One SL fare is 43 kr (2026), valid 75 minutes with transfers. From Nynäshamn, take a train back no later than 3 hours before all-aboard.

Where the cruise ships dock

Stockholm has three city berths and one port an hour away. Check your itinerary, because the berth decides how your day works. For sights and a full day plan, see the full Stockholm port guide.

  • ·Stadsgården (Södermalm). On the Södermalm waterfront, about 2 km from Gamla Stan. Large cruise ships use it. Fotografiska is beside the quay.
  • ·Frihamnen. Stockholm's largest cruise terminal, used by big ships and turnarounds. It is in the eastern docks, about 4 km from Gamla Stan. Too far to walk comfortably.
  • ·Skeppsbron (Gamla Stan). On the Gamla Stan waterfront, for smaller ships only. The old town starts at the quay.
  • ·Nynäshamn (Seawalk pier). About 60 km south of Stockholm, for ships too large for the city berths. There are 21 calls scheduled in 2026. Most ships use the Seawalk floating pier; on busy days some anchor and tender passengers to the guest harbour (Gästhamnen), about 600 m from the station.

Walking from Stadsgården

This is the easy one. Walk west along the water to Slussen and cross to Gamla Stan. It is about 2 km and takes 20–30 minutes. The route is flat the whole way.

Gamla Stan itself has cobbles and some steep lanes. Go early: the main lane, Västerlånggatan, fills with groups by late morning, while the side lanes stay quieter.

Bus 1 from Frihamnen

Do not try to walk from Frihamnen. It is about 4 km of dockland roads.

  • ·Where to board: bus 1 starts at Frihamnen.
  • ·Route: via Stureplan, Hötorget and Cityterminalen (by Central Station) to Kungsholmen.
  • ·Time: about 15–20 minutes to Stureplan.
  • ·Cost: 43 kr single (2026).
  • ·How to pay: tap a contactless card or phone, or buy in the SL app.

Bus 1 does not go into Gamla Stan. From Stureplan it is about 15 minutes' walk to the old town, or change to the metro on the same ticket. Check the SL app for the day's timetable.

Taxi

A taxi from Frihamnen to Gamla Stan takes about 10–15 minutes. Stockholm taxi firms set their own fares, so there is no fixed price. Every taxi must show a yellow comparison-price label on the rear side window. Read it before you get in, or use a large firm. Pay by card.

Train 43 from Nynäshamn

If your ship docks at Nynäshamn, the city day is shorter. Plan for it.

  1. ·Walk from the Seawalk pier to Nynäshamn station. It is about 1.3 km, 15–20 minutes, and level. Follow the green line painted on the pavement. From the tender landing it is 7–8 minutes.
  2. ·Tap your card at the platform reader before boarding.
  3. ·Commuter train line 43 runs to Stockholm City in about 60 minutes. Trains run about every 30 minutes.

The fare is the same 43 kr single (2026). SL has no zones, so one fare covers Nynäshamn too. The line has single-track sections and delays happen. Allow about 80 minutes each way door to door.

A taxi to Nynäshamn station is an option if the walk is hard for you. Ships that anchor use tenders, which may not suit passengers with reduced mobility.

SL tickets: single or day ticket

One SL fare covers the metro, buses, commuter trains and the Djurgården ferry.

  • ·Single: 43 kr, valid 75 minutes with transfers (2026). Tap a contactless card or phone at the metro gates or platform readers, or buy in the SL app.
  • ·24-hour ticket: 180 kr (2026). It pays for itself after five trips.
  • ·72-hour ticket: 360 kr (2026).
  • ·Under-7s travel free with a paying adult.

The Djurgården ferry (line 82) runs from Slussen via Skeppsholmen to Djurgården for the Vasa Museum and Skansen. It is 43 kr on an SL ticket.

When to head back

The guide's rule depends on your berth:

  • ·Stadsgården: leave Gamla Stan 75 minutes before all-aboard, to be on board 45 minutes early. The walk back is 20–30 minutes.
  • ·Frihamnen: leave the centre 90 minutes before all-aboard, by bus 1 or taxi.
  • ·Nynäshamn: board a train at Stockholm City no later than 3 hours before all-aboard. The trip is about 60 minutes by train plus 15–20 minutes on foot, with a 90-minute margin on top for delays.

If you are running late in the city, take a taxi to the terminal and check the price label first. By road, Stockholm to Nynäshamn takes at least 45 minutes. If you will be late, call the port agent number printed in your daily programme.

To work out times for your own ship, plan your day with your own all-aboard time.

Common mistakes

  • ·Trying to walk from Frihamnen. It is about 4 km of dockland roads. Take bus 1 from the terminal or a taxi.
  • ·Under-estimating Nynäshamn. It is 60 km from Stockholm. Allow about 80 minutes each way and take a train back no later than 3 hours before all-aboard.
  • ·Getting into a taxi without checking the price. Fares are set by each company. Read the yellow label on the rear window.
  • ·Buying several single tickets. At 43 kr a ride, the 24-hour ticket (180 kr) pays for itself after five trips, including ferries.
  • ·Bringing cash. Museums such as the Vasa are cash-free, and SL takes cards and the app.
