Nice Cruise Port to the Old Town (Vieux Nice): Train, Bus or Walk

Quick answer: Most large ships anchor off Villefranche-sur-Mer, 5 km east of Nice, and tender you to the Port de la Santé. Walk about 10 minutes, with stairs, to Villefranche-sur-Mer station and take the TER train to Nice-Ville: about 5 minutes for €3.60 full fare (2026). From Nice-Ville, Vieux Nice is about 20 minutes on foot or a few stops on tram line 1 (€1.70 Solo ticket). Bus 600 (€2.10 contactless) and Lignes d'Azur bus 15 (€1.70, about 25–30 minutes to Nice port) are slower options. Small ships berth in Nice's Port Lympia, a short, flat walk from the old town. For a 17:30 all-aboard, leave Vieux Nice by 14:55 and be at the tender pier by 15:30.

Where the cruise ships dock

"Nice" on a cruise itinerary almost always means Villefranche-sur-Mer. There are two places your ship can be.

  • ·Villefranche-sur-Mer tender pier (Port de la Santé). Large ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers to this small harbour, which has a tourist information desk and toilets. Nice centre is about 5 km west.
  • ·Port of Nice (Port Lympia). Ships under about 180 m can berth here, below Castle Hill.

Check your daily programme to see which applies. Since a prefectoral order of 9 December 2025, only one ship of more than 1,300 passengers may call per day at Villefranche, so tender piers are less crowded than before.

Can you walk to Vieux Nice?

Only from Port Lympia, where the old town is a short, flat walk west round the harbour. From Villefranche, no: Nice is about 5 km away, so take the train or a bus.

TER train from Villefranche to Nice-Ville

This is the quickest and most reliable way to Nice.

  • ·Cost: €3.60 one way, full fare (2026).
  • ·Journey time: about 5 minutes.
  • ·Frequency: around 60 trains a day, between roughly 06:30 and 23:30.
  • ·Where to board: Villefranche-sur-Mer station, about 10 minutes' walk from the tender pier. The walk includes stairs and a short climb.
  • ·How to pay: buy at the station machine or in the SNCF Connect app before you board.

From Nice-Ville station to Vieux Nice

  • ·Walk: about 20 minutes.
  • ·Tram line 1: board at the Gare Thiers stop and ride a few minutes to Cathédrale–Vieille Ville. A Solo ticket costs €1.70 (2026). Validate each time you board.

Bus 600 (formerly bus 100)

The coastal bus runs Nice–Villefranche–Monaco–Menton. It was renumbered from 100 to 600 in April 2024.

  • ·Cost: €2.10 with a contactless card or phone, or €2.50 cash to the driver (2026).
  • ·Frequency: every 10–15 minutes on weekdays and about every 20 minutes at weekends.
  • ·Journey time: slower than the train, because of traffic on the coast road.

Buses fill up in summer, so the train is safer on a tight schedule. A Lignes d'Azur ticket is not valid for trips into Monaco.

Lignes d'Azur bus 15 to Nice port

  • ·Cost: €1.70 Solo ticket on a rechargeable card (2026). There are no paper tickets; drivers sell a €4 card to passengers without one.
  • ·Journey time: about 25–30 minutes to Nice port.
  • ·Where to board: the Octroi stop, about 7 minutes' walk from the tender pier.

Taxi

Use the official taxi rank and agree the fare before you get in; we have no checked fare for this route. Ignore unlicensed drivers near the tender pier offering "tours" or rides. On the way back, taxis wait at Nice-Ville station.

When to head back

The rule from Villefranche: be at the tender pier two hours before all-aboard if you return by train or bus. For a 17:30 all-aboard, that means 15:30.

The train is short, but the station walk has stairs and tender queues build in the last hour. Leave Vieux Nice 155 minutes before all-aboard, or Nice-Ville station 135 minutes before.

If you miss a train, the next one is rarely more than 20–30 minutes away in the daytime.

Common mistakes

  • ·Assuming the ship docks in Nice. Most ships anchor at Villefranche, 5 km away. Check your daily programme for the tender pier.
  • ·Using a Lignes d'Azur ticket on bus 600 into Monaco. Tap a contactless card instead.
  • ·Forgetting that Villefranche station has stairs. Allow 10 minutes from the station to the pier, more with limited mobility, and add the tender queue on top.
  • ·Leaving your bag open on the train. Pickpockets work the crowded coastal trains and buses. Keep bags in front and stand away from the doors.

Accessibility

Wheelchair transfer to the tenders depends on sea conditions and the tender design, so ask the ship. The walk to Villefranche station includes stairs. In Nice, the tram is step-free.
