Ajaccio cruise port to the old town: walk, bus or taxi
Quick answer: Walk. Most ships dock at the Gare Maritime on Quai L'Herminier or the cruise mole next to it, 0.3–0.5 km from Place Foch and the old town. It is a flat 5–10 minute walk along the waterfront, and it is free. You only need a bus or taxi for places further out: city bus line 5 runs from Place de Gaulle, next to Place Foch, to the Pointe de la Parata, 11 km west. Taxis wait at a rank by the terminal and are metered. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 minutes if your ship is tendering. From La Parata, start back at least 2 hours before all-aboard.
Where the cruise ships dock
Ajaccio's cruise berths sit on the edge of the old town, in the central port area.
- ·Gare Maritime, Quai L'Herminier: a small modern terminal with toilets, ferry booking desks and a taxi rank. It is about 0.3–0.5 km from Place Foch. It is also equipped for tenders.
- ·Môle Croisières: the dedicated cruise berth at the commercial port, in the same central port area.
Ships normally dock, but it depends on the ship's size, berth allocation and other port traffic. Larger ships sometimes anchor in the gulf and tender passengers into the central port area by the Gare Maritime. From there the walk into town is the same. Tendering adds time in each direction, so ask the ship how long to allow. Do not assume your ship will dock because the last one did: check your daily programme.
Walking to Place Foch and the old town
Walking is the right answer for Ajaccio itself. From the pier, head left and follow the waterfront road straight into the centre. You pass the market square and the town hall, then reach Place Foch and the old town. The route is flat and takes 5–10 minutes.
- ·Tourist office: 3 Boulevard du Roi Jérôme, about five minutes from the port. It can also call a taxi.
- ·Market (Place Campinchi): the covered market next to Place Foch and the marina. It runs Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–13:00, with a producers' market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
- ·Maison Bonaparte: Napoleon's birthplace, €7 full price (2026). Closed on Mondays. From 1 April to 30 September it opens 10:00–12:30 and 13:15–17:30.
- ·Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption: free, in the old town lanes.
Some old town streets are stone-paved. Use the crossings on the waterfront roads, as traffic is heavy. Many shops close for lunch, roughly 12:30–14:30, so do your visits in the morning.
City bus line 5 to La Parata
You do not need a bus for the old town. Line 5 is for the Pointe de la Parata, the headland 11 km west with a 17th-century Genoese tower facing the Sanguinaires islands.
- ·Where to board: Place de Gaulle, next to Place Foch, a short walk from the port.
- ·Route: along the coast road to the Pointe de la Parata, passing the western beaches.
- ·Cost: check the current fare with Muvitarra, the city bus operator, or at the tourist office.
- ·Time: allow plenty of time. The coast road is busy.
- ·Gotcha: check the return timetable before you go, and catch an early bus back rather than the last useful one.
At La Parata, a marked trail climbs to the foot of the tower in about 20 minutes. Bring water and shoes with grip. The trail is not step-free.
Lines 2 and 5 also serve Plage du Trottel, a larger beach west of the centre. You can walk there along the waterfront in about 30 minutes instead.
Taxi
There is a taxi rank by the Gare Maritime. You do not need one for the old town. A taxi makes sense for La Parata on a short call or a tender day, or as a fallback if you are running late.
- ·Cost: taxis are metered. A fixed price for a set time can be agreed; do this before setting off.
- ·Booking: the tourist office can call a taxi for you.
- ·Gotcha: traffic in Ajaccio is heavy, so journey times vary.
Tourist train and open-top bus
In season, small tourist trains and double-decker buses run from Place Foch, including towards the Sanguinaires. Check fares and times on board or at Place Foch.
Options compared
| Option | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|

| Bus line 5 | Check with Muvitarra or the tourist office | Allow plenty of time; 11 km | La Parata and the western beaches |
| Taxi | Metered, or a fixed price agreed first | Varies with traffic | La Parata on a short call, or a late return |
| Tourist train or open-top bus | Check on board or at Place Foch | Varies | La Parata in season without the bus |
When to head back
The rule in Ajaccio: be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 minutes if your ship is tendering. From La Parata, start back at least 2 hours before all-aboard.
The centre is a short walk, so the real risks are heavy traffic on the coast road back from La Parata and tender queues on days when a ship anchors. Leave Place Foch 70 minutes before all-aboard if docked, or 100 minutes if tendering. Leave Plage du Trottel 90 minutes before and La Parata 2 hours before.
| All-aboard | Leave Place Foch by (docked) | Leave Place Foch by (tender) | Leave Trottel by | Leave La Parata by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16:30 | 15:20 | 14:50 | 15:00 | 14:30 |
| 17:30 | 16:20 | 15:50 | 16:00 | 15:30 |
| 18:30 | 17:20 | 16:50 | 17:00 | 16:30 |
If you are stuck at La Parata or the western beaches, take a taxi to the port. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
You can plan your day with your own all-aboard time.
Common mistakes
- ·Planning the Maison Bonaparte on a Monday. It is closed on Mondays. Swap in the Palais Fesch or La Parata.
- ·Arriving at shops or the museum at 12:45. Many shops close roughly 12:30–14:30 and the Maison Bonaparte closes 12:30–13:15. Visit in the morning and eat at midday.
- ·Assuming your ship will dock because the last one did. Larger ships sometimes anchor and tender. Add 30 minutes to your return if tendering.
- ·Leaving La Parata on the last bus that might get you back. The coast road is busy. Start back at least 2 hours before all-aboard, or take a taxi.
