Palermo Cruise Port to the Historic Centre: Walk, Bus or Taxi
Quick answer: You do not need transport. Ships dock at the Stazione Marittima on Molo Vittorio Veneto, at the edge of the old town. Quattro Canti is about 20 minutes on foot (1.5 km, flat), and the Cathedral and Palazzo dei Normanni are 25–30 minutes. AMAT city buses cost €1.40 for 90 minutes if you buy the ticket before boarding, or €1.80 on board (2026). Taxis wait at the terminal; agree the fare first. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or allow 2.5 hours if you go up to Monreale by bus.
Where the cruise ships dock
Palermo is a docking port, so there are no tenders. There are two cruise terminals, both run by West Sicily Gate.
- ·Stazione Marittima (Molo Vittorio Veneto). The main cruise terminal, on Via Francesco Crispi. It was rebuilt from the 1950s maritime station and the quay takes two large cruise ships. It is about 1.5 km from the centre. Walk out onto Via Crispi and head for Porta Felice and the Cassaro.
- ·Terminal Sammuzzo. A second cruise terminal for large ships, opened in May 2026. Your daily programme will say which terminal your ship uses.
The layout makes the day simple. One straight street, the Cassaro (Corso Vittorio Emanuele), runs from the waterfront at Porta Felice past Quattro Canti and the Cathedral to the Palazzo dei Normanni. The main sights line up along a single walk.
Walking: the simplest way in
- ·Cost: free.
- ·Time: about 20 minutes to Quattro Canti; 25–30 minutes to the Cathedral and Palazzo dei Normanni.
- ·Route: from the terminal, follow Via Crispi to Porta Felice, then turn up Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Quattro Canti is the baroque crossroads where the Cassaro meets Via Maqueda. Piazza Pretoria, with its fountain, is next door. Carry straight on for the Cathedral, and the Palazzo dei Normanni is about 5 minutes beyond it.
The walk is flat the whole way. The gotchas are the streets themselves. Pavements in the old town are narrow, and traffic and scooters are heavy. Via Maqueda is partly pedestrianised and easier going.
From the Palazzo dei Normanni, Ballarò market is about 5 minutes on foot. Vucciria is about 25 minutes' walk from the terminal and fits in easily on the way back.
AMAT city bus
You will not need a bus for the historic centre itself. Buses are useful for Monreale or the beach at Mondello.
| Ticket | Price (2026) | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|
| 90 minutes | €1.40 | Tobacconists (tabacchi), newsstands, MyAmat and PALERMOBILITA apps |
| Single bought on board | €1.80 | On the bus |
| Day ticket | €3.50 | Tabacchi, newsstands, apps |
Validate your ticket as soon as you board. A 2026–2028 AMAT plan proposes higher fares, so check the price in the app before you travel.
Bus 389 to Monreale
Bus 389 leaves from Piazza Indipendenza, a short walk behind the Palazzo dei Normanni, and terminates near Monreale Cathedral. Check the fare in the MyAmat app. Traffic up the hill is slow, so allow a good margin.
The service has not been fully reliable in 2026. The extension into Monreale was suspended on 16 June 2026 and restored on 18 June 2026. If it stops short again, a local shuttle connects the Rocca area to the town. Check AMAT notices on the day and keep a licensed taxi as your backup.
Bus 806 to Mondello
Bus 806 starts at Piazza Don Sturzo, near Piazza Politeama, and runs up Viale della Libertà to Mondello beach. The fare is €1.40 for 90 minutes (2026). AMAT did not publish a 2026 timetable for this line, so allow at least an hour each way with walking and waiting, and leave plenty of time for the return.
Taxi
Taxis wait at the terminal. Use licensed white taxis. Agree the fare before you get in, or confirm the meter is on. Journey times vary with traffic.
Walk, bus or taxi compared

When to head back
The ship expects you on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. The guide's rule: start walking back from the Cathedral 75 minutes before all-aboard. From Monreale, board a bus back at least 2.5 hours before.
These are the latest times to set off. Leaving earlier is better.
| All-aboard | Leave Quattro Canti | Leave the Cathedral | Leave Palazzo dei Normanni | Board the bus in Monreale |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16:30 | 15:10 | 15:15 | 15:00 | 14:00 |

| 18:00 | 16:40 | 16:45 | 16:30 | 15:30 |
In the centre you can always walk back. From Monreale, take a licensed taxi if the bus does not come, and agree the fare first. If you will be late, call the port agent number in your daily programme. Plan your day with your own all-aboard time.
Common mistakes
- ·Buying the bus ticket on board. It costs €1.80 on board against €1.40 from a tabacchi or the app (2026).
- ·Assuming bus 389 always reaches Monreale. The extension was interrupted in June 2026. Check AMAT notices on the day.
- ·Visiting the Palazzo dei Normanni on a Sunday afternoon. On Sundays and holidays it closes at 12:30. Go first thing, or on another day.
- ·Arriving at the markets in mid-afternoon. Ballarò is a morning market; most stalls wind down after about 14:00.
- ·Wearing shorts or sleeveless tops to the cathedrals. Cover shoulders and knees for Palermo Cathedral, Monreale and the Cappella Palatina.
- ·Taking a taxi without agreeing the price. Some drivers do not start the meter and quote a high fare at the end.
