Is Hvar a tender port? What it means for your day
Quick answer: Yes. There is no cruise berth at Hvar Town. Ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers to the main tender station on the Riva, the harbour waterfront. From the landing, St Stephen's Square is under 10 minutes' walk on the flat, so you need no transport in town. Fortica is a 20–30 minute climb from the square and costs €12 (2026). Be in the tender queue 90 minutes before all-aboard: by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
Why ships anchor at Hvar
Hvar Town is a small harbour town on the south-west of the island. It has the largest square in Dalmatia running inland from the harbour and the Fortica fortress on the hill above, but no berth for cruise ships. Every ship anchors and tenders.
Ship days are common. Hvar recorded 35 foreign cruise ship calls in the first half of 2026, the same number as Šibenik, and peak season runs from mid-June to August.
Where the tenders land
There is one landing: the tender station on the Riva in Hvar Town harbour. It puts you on the town waterfront, not at a terminal outside town.
- ·Turn right for the Franciscan monastery and a small swimming cove, one to two minutes away.
- ·Turn left for the Jadrolinija office, an ATM, waterfront restaurants and St Stephen's Square.
- ·Taxi-boat kiosks for the Pakleni islands are along the same harbour.
What tendering means for your day
Cruise passengers report the tender operation running smoothly at Hvar. Three things still shape the day.
Everyone comes back through one landing. Queues build in the last two hours before all-aboard. Plan to be in the queue 90 minutes before, not 30.
Weather can affect tender operations. In rough sea, tendering may be disrupted and the taxi boats to the islands may not run either.
Going ashore with a wheelchair depends on the swell. The tender transfer is the main barrier, so ask the ship whether wheelchair users can go ashore that day. On land, the Riva and St Stephen's Square are flat but paved with smooth stone. Fortica is reached only by stepped paths and is not suitable for wheelchairs. Taxi boats have no step-free boarding.
Getting around from the landing
On foot to St Stephen's Square
- ·Cost: free
- ·Time: under 10 minutes
- ·How: walk left along the Riva. The square runs from the Arsenal at the harbour to St Stephen's Cathedral.
The square is quietest before 09:00. The cathedral costs €2 (2026) and opens 09:00–12:30 and 17:00–19:30, so visit in the morning on a cruise day. Cover shoulders and knees.
On foot to Fortica
- ·Cost: free walk; fortress entry €12 (2026), or €15 combined with the theatre, loggia and clock tower
- ·Time: about 20–30 minutes up from St Stephen's Square
- ·How: signposted stone steps climb through the Groda quarter, then a path through pine trees.
The tourist board listed Fortica as open 09:00–18:00 in June 2026. Go at opening. The upper section has no shade, and the polished stone steps can be slippery. Allow 1.5–2 hours including the walk.
Taxi boat to the Pakleni islands
- ·Cost: fares vary by island and season; check the price at the kiosk before you board
- ·Time: about 10 minutes to Jerolim, about 30 minutes to Palmižana
- ·How: kiosks and boats line the main harbour, near the tender landing.
Each boat serves one island only, and there are no boats between islands. Confirm the destination and the return times before you pay. Boats run every 20–30 minutes in peak season, less often outside it and in rough sea.
On foot to the beaches west of town
Bonj is about 10 minutes' walk west along the waterfront past Hotel Amfora. The public pebble area is free; beach-club sunbeds cost €40–60 a pair in July–August (2026). Pokonji Dol is about 25 minutes on a signposted coastal path, with free pebbles, sunbeds for hire and two family-run restaurants. Both paths are uneven.
Options compared
| Option | Cost (2026) | Time from the landing area | Return risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walk to St Stephen's Square | Free | Under 10 min | Low |
| Walk up to Fortica | €12 entry (€15 combined) | 20–30 min from the square | Low, but allow for the walk down |
| Walk to Bonj | Free (sunbeds extra) | About 10 min | Low |
| Walk to Pokonji Dol | Free (sunbeds extra) | About 25 min | Low |
| Taxi boat to Jerolim | Check at the kiosk | About 10 min by boat | Medium |
| Taxi boat to Palmižana | Check at the kiosk | About 30 min by boat | Medium to high |
You do not need a ship tour for Hvar Town itself, as the square, cathedral and Fortica are all within walking distance of the tender landing. A ship tour is worth it for the inland island, such as the lavender areas and Stari Grad, because you would otherwise need a hire car or taxi and a firm plan for getting back. For the Pakleni islands, independent taxi boats work well on a long call, but a ship-run boat trip removes the return-timing risk on a short one.
When to head back
The rule: be in the tender queue on the Riva 90 minutes before all-aboard. If you go to the Pakleni islands, take a return taxi boat that lands you in Hvar harbour by 15:00 at the latest for a 17:30 all-aboard. The next boat may be 20–30 minutes away, and sea conditions can change the timetable.
| All-aboard | Leave Fortica by | Leave Pokonji Dol by | Leave Bonj by | Land from Palmižana by | In the tender queue by |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17:00 | 15:00 | 15:05 | 15:20 | 14:30 | 15:30 |
| 17:30 | 15:30 | 15:35 | 15:50 | 15:00 | 16:00 |
| 18:00 | 16:00 | 16:05 | 16:20 | 15:30 | 16:30 |
If you miss your planned taxi boat, ask the boat crews on the island about the next departure or a private boat. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
For other times, plan your day with your own all-aboard time.
Common mistakes
- ·Returning to the tender landing 30 minutes before all-aboard. Everyone returns at once. Be in the queue 90 minutes before.
- ·Getting on a taxi boat without checking return times. Each boat serves one island. Ask for the return schedule before paying and aim to be back in Hvar by 15:00.
- ·Climbing to Fortica at midday in July or August. Go at opening (09:00) and carry water. The upper section has no shade.
- ·Planning to see the cathedral in the afternoon. It closes 12:30–17:00, which covers most of a cruise afternoon.
- ·Walking through town in swimwear. Hvar's summer public-order package includes clothing rules, so cover up away from the beach.
