Ibiza Cruise Port to Dalt Vila and the Town: Bus, Taxi or Walk

ElkePublished 2026-10-197 min readUpdated for 2026 cruise season

Quick Answer

Most cruise ships berth at the Botafoc breakwater, about 3 km across the harbour from Ibiza Town. To reach Dalt Vila, take the PortBus shuttle (about 10–15 minutes), the City Boat water taxi (a few minutes' crossing, roughly every 30 minutes) or a taxi (10–15 minutes), or walk 35–40 minutes round the bay. Then allow 15–20 minutes and a steep climb to the cathedral. With the ship at Botafoc, leave Dalt Vila 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Ibiza Cruise Port to Dalt Vila and the Town: Bus, Taxi or Walk

Quick answer: Most cruise ships berth at the Botafoc breakwater, about 3 km across the harbour from Ibiza Town.

Where the cruise ships dock

Botafoc breakwater (Dique del Botafoc / Muelle Ribera Botafoc). This is the main berth for large and medium ships, about 3 km from the old town on the far side of the bay. The port authority map shows a provisional maritime station here, with a tourist information point. Taxis and shuttle buses wait at the terminal, and the City Boat stops at Marina Botafoc.

Town harbour (Muelle de Levante area). Some smaller ships tie up here, near the base of the old town walls, about 0.3 km from the centre. You step ashore in La Marina and can walk to the Dalt Vila gates in 5–10 minutes.

Ibiza is rarely a tender port. Ships normally berth, though tendering can happen when the port is busy.

PortBus shuttle

The PortBus shuttle runs between Botafoc and Ibiza Town during cruise calls. It sets down near the marina below the old town.

  • ·Time: about 10–15 minutes.
  • ·Payment: pay the driver. The fare is not confirmed.
  • ·Ship shuttles: many lines run their own shuttle to the same area. Check your daily programme.
  • ·Queues: longest just after the gangway opens and in the last two hours. Waiting 20 minutes in the morning helps.

City Boat water taxi

City Boat Ibiza links Ibiza Town with Marina Botafoc, with a stop for Talamanca beach. In town, look for the wooden ticket cabin at the port.

  • ·Time: a few minutes' crossing.
  • ·Frequency: roughly every 30 minutes. Timetables change through the season.
  • ·Tickets: at the booth or on board. The fare is not confirmed.
  • ·Botafoc end: the boat stops at Marina Botafoc. Return from the same stop, or from Talamanca if you spend the afternoon on the beach.

Taxi

Taxis wait outside the Botafoc terminal. The ride to town takes 10–15 minutes and is metered, though the fare is not confirmed.

Vehicles cannot enter Dalt Vila. Drivers set down at Portal de ses Taules, the main gate, or near the Hotel Mirador at the top. A tunnel next to the hotel gives access near the top, so you can ride up and walk down.

Walking

From Botafoc, follow the harbour road round the bay. It takes about 35–40 minutes to Ibiza Town, with little shade. Add 15–20 minutes and a steep climb to reach the cathedral at the top of Dalt Vila.

Fine on a cool morning; tiring in July and August.

The Alsa island bus

Alsa runs the island bus network from 2026. An urban trip costs €1.70 by card or QR, or €2.40 in cash. The main bus station, CETIS, is on the edge of town, about 15 minutes' walk from the harbour. It is more useful for trips out of town than for Dalt Vila.

Getting into Dalt Vila

Portal de ses Taules is the main and steepest way in; Portal Nou is gentler. The cobbled lanes are slippery, so wear shoes with grip. Climb first thing and keep La Marina or a beach for the afternoon.

La Marina is flat, but there is no practical step-free route to the cathedral. A taxi to the Hotel Mirador and a walk down is the easiest approach. Ask your ship whether its shuttle is accessible.

When to head back

Shuttle and boat queues grow in the last two hours. The climb down from the cathedral through the lanes takes 15–20 minutes. The guide rule for a ship at Botafoc:

  • ·Leave Dalt Vila 90 minutes before all-aboard.
  • ·Be at the shuttle or City Boat stop in town 75 minutes before all-aboard.
  • ·If you walk back round the bay, leave town 105 minutes before.

If your ship is in the town harbour, being back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard is enough. From Dalt Vila, that means leaving about 80 minutes before.

If you are running late, take a taxi from the rank in La Marina to Botafoc (10–15 minutes). If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once. To work out times for your own call, plan your day with your own all-aboard time.

Common mistakes

  • ·Assuming the ship docks in town. Large ships berth at Botafoc, 3 km away. Plan the shuttle or boat both ways.
  • ·Climbing Dalt Vila at midday in July or August. Go up first thing. There is no shade on the ramparts at midday in summer.
  • ·Paying cash on the bus. Card or QR fares are cheaper: €1.70 instead of €2.40 in town (2026).
  • ·Leaving bags open in crowds. Thieves in Spain often work in teams and use distraction. Keep bags closed in the lanes and on the shuttle.
