Alicante cruise port to the city centre: bus, taxi or walk

Quick answer: Ships dock at the cruise terminal on the Muelle de Levante, about 1.5 km from the centre. There is no tender. A free shuttle runs to Plaza Puerta del Mar in a few minutes, or you can walk there in 15–25 minutes on the flat. Taxis wait at the terminal rank. For the castle, the lift costs €2.70 and the CSB castle bus €1.45 (2026). Start back from the Explanada 75 minutes before all-aboard: 16:15 for a 17:30 all-aboard.

Where the cruise ships dock

There is one cruise terminal: Alicante cruise terminal, Muelle 14, on the Muelle de Levante. It sits about 1.5 km from the centre.

The two-floor terminal, run by Global Ports Holding, was refurbished in 2024 and has a café, information desk, toilets and shops. The taxi rank is outside, and the free shuttle leaves from here.

Free port shuttle

  • ·Cost: free.
  • ·Time: a few minutes.
  • ·Where it goes: between the terminal and the Plaza Puerta del Mar area, at the start of the Explanada.
  • ·When it runs: when ships are in.

Plaza Puerta del Mar is a useful place to land. The castle bus starts there, Postiguet beach is just to the east, and the castle lift is opposite the beach.

Walking from the terminal

  • ·Cost: free.
  • ·Time: 15–25 minutes to Plaza Puerta del Mar, depending on your berth.
  • ·Distance: 1–2 km.
  • ·Surface: flat and paved.

From the terminal, follow Calle Muelle Levante past the marina to the roundabout, then carry on to Plaza Puerta del Mar. That is where the Explanada begins. Santa Bárbara Castle stands on a steep hill above the beach, so use the lift or the castle bus to get up there.

Taxi

Taxis wait at the rank by the terminal, and there are ranks in the centre too. We have no checked fare for this short ride, so ask the driver before you set off.

Only use the licensed rank. Unofficial drivers sometimes offer rides at the port. A taxi from a rank in town is also your back-up if you are running late on the way back to the ship.

Getting up to Santa Bárbara Castle

Entry to the castle grounds and the MUSA city museum inside it is free. You only pay to get up the hill.

Castle lift (ascensor)

  • ·Cost: €2.70 general. Retired pensioners ride free with proof (2026).
  • ·Where: Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora, opposite Postiguet beach.
  • ·Time: a short ride inside the rock.
  • ·Tickets: you can buy online in advance, which is recommended.

The lift closes for maintenance from time to time. Check before you rely on it, and keep the castle bus or a taxi as a back-up. The castle opens at 10:00, so ride the lift at opening time on days with two or more ships in port.

Castle bus (line CSB)

  • ·Cost: €1.45 per trip (2026).
  • ·Frequency: every 40 minutes.
  • ·Where to board: Plaza Puerta del Mar.
  • ·Stops: Postiguet-Pasarela, MARQ-Castillo, Plaza del Doctor Gómez Ulla and the castle.

The bus runs on the castle's seasonal hours.

A good plan is to ride up and then walk down through the Barrio de Santa Cruz. The old quarter is steep with many steps, and it is much easier downhill.

TRAM d'Alacant

  • ·Where to board: lines 1–4 start at Luceros in the centre and stop at Mercado near Postiguet.
  • ·Tickets: buy one at the station machine.
  • ·MARQ: the MARQ-Castillo stop serves the archaeology museum.
  • ·Beaches and towns: line 4 runs to Playa de San Juan, line 3 to El Campello and line 1 to Benidorm.

When to head back

The rule is simple. Start back from the Explanada 75 minutes before all-aboard. The walk from Puerta del Mar to the terminal takes 15–25 minutes, and you need time for terminal security.

From Postiguet beach, leave 85 minutes before, since you first walk back to Puerta del Mar. From Playa de San Juan or further along the tram line, leave 90 minutes before, because you add a tram ride into the centre.

If something goes wrong, take a taxi from a rank in the centre to the cruise terminal on Muelle de Levante. If you are delayed out of town, call the port agent number in your daily programme at once. Your times may differ, so plan your day with your own all-aboard time.

Common mistakes

  • ·Climbing to the castle in the midday heat. Take the lift up from Postiguet or the CSB bus, and walk down through Santa Cruz.
  • ·Assuming the castle lift always runs. It closes for maintenance now and then. Have the CSB bus or a taxi as a back-up.
  • ·Booking Tabarca on a short call. The boat takes about an hour each way. Only go on a long call with a fixed return sailing well inside your margin.
  • ·Getting in an unofficial car at the port. Use the licensed taxi rank at the terminal or a rank in town.
