Catania Cruise Port to the City Centre: Bus, Taxi or Walk

Quick answer: You do not need a bus or a taxi for the centre. Ships dock in the Port of Catania, at the southern edge of the historic centre. Piazza del Duomo is about 1.2 km away, a flat 15–25 minute walk along Via Dusmet and through Porta Uzeda. Licensed white taxis wait near the port exit and take about 10 minutes; use the meter or agree the fare first. The buses and trains that matter are the ones out of town: the regional train to Taormina-Giardini costs €5.50 one way (2026). For the centre, start walking back 85 minutes before all-aboard.

Where the cruise ships dock

Catania is a docking port, so there are no tenders. The cruise berths are run by Global Ports Holding and sit inside the commercial port. There is no large terminal building.

  • ·Catania Cruise Port berths (including Pier 25). About 1.2 km from the centre. Pier 25, a 405 m berth for the largest ships, reopened as a third cruise berth in July 2025.
  • ·Getting to the gate. Shuttles from the ship to the port gate depend on the berth and the line. Check your daily programme.

Walking: the simplest way in

Walking is free and is the easiest way to the centre, the fish market, the Roman theatre and Castello Ursino.

  • ·Route. From the port gate, walk north along the waterfront road, Via Dusmet. Enter the centre through Porta Uzeda, which opens onto Piazza del Duomo.
  • ·Time. 15–25 minutes, depending on your berth.
  • ·Terrain. The route is flat but crosses busy harbour traffic. Cross at the lights.
  • ·Paving. The centre is paved in smooth black lava stone, which turns slippery in rain. Via Etnea climbs gently north from the Duomo.

Taxi

Licensed white taxis wait near the port exit. The ride to the centre takes about 10 minutes.

  • ·Cost. Use the meter or agree the fare before you get in.
  • ·Gotcha. Some drivers at the port quote a high fixed fare for a short ride. Use a licensed white taxi and ask for the meter.

Buses and trains: for leaving Catania, not for the centre

There is no need to take a bus to the old town. The public transport you may want starts near Catania Centrale station, north of the port along the seafront.

Regional train to Taormina

  • ·Cost. €5.50 one way regional, €8.50 Intercity (2026).
  • ·Time. 36–68 minutes regional, 36–41 minutes Intercity.
  • ·Frequency. Roughly every 30–60 minutes.
  • ·Tickets. Buy in the Trenitalia app or at the machines. A digital regional ticket locks to its train at departure time.
  • ·Gotcha. Taormina-Giardini station is at sea level. Take a local bus up to the Taormina bus terminal, which takes 5–15 minutes.

Etna Trasporti / Interbus coach to Taormina

Line ET07 / IN14 picks up at the Via Archimede bus terminal near Catania Centrale. It takes about 70 minutes and drops you at the Taormina bus terminal on Via Pirandello, in the upper town, so there is no extra climb. Check the fare from the city stops at booking.interbus.it.

AST bus to Etna

This one does not work on a cruise day. It leaves once a day at 08:15 from Piazza Giovanni XXIII, beside Catania Centrale. The only return leaves Rifugio Sapienza at 16:30 and reaches Catania around 18:30, after almost every all-aboard time. For Etna, book a ship tour or a private driver.

When to head back

The ship expects you on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. From the centre, the rule is simple: start walking back from Piazza del Duomo 85 minutes before all-aboard. That covers the 15–25 minute walk and leaves you on board an hour early. From Castello Ursino, which is closer to the port, leave 80 minutes before.

If you go to Taormina, be on a train leaving Taormina-Giardini at least 2.5 hours before all-aboard. From the Taormina bus terminal in the upper town, leave 165 minutes before.

Trains from Taormina are irregular around midday, so check the return in the Trenitalia app before you leave Catania. In the centre you can always walk back. If you miss a train in Taormina, take the next train or coach and call the port agent number in your daily programme straight away. A taxi from Taormina to Catania takes about an hour. Plan your day with your own all-aboard time.

Common mistakes

  • ·Planning to reach Etna on the AST bus. It leaves at 08:15 and returns at 16:30, back in Catania around 18:30. Book a ship tour or a private driver.
  • ·Visiting the fish market in the afternoon or on a Sunday. La Pescheria is a morning market, Monday to Saturday. Go first thing.
  • ·Walking up from Taormina-Giardini station. The town is about 200 m above the station. Take the local bus or a taxi.
  • ·Catching the last workable train back from Taormina. Plan for the train before it, and treat the last one as the fallback.
