Dubrovnik cruise port guide

Most ships dock at Gruž, about 3 km north-west of the Old Town; one ship at a time may anchor off the Old Town and tender passengers into the old harbour. From Gruž, Libertas bus 1A or 1B reaches Pile Gate in 15–20 minutes for €2.50 paid on board (2026). Leave the Old Town at least 75 minutes before all-aboard, because summer traffic on the single road back to Gruž is slow.

Dubrovnik is a short day done well or a long day done badly. The Old Town is compact and car-free, but it sits 3 km from where most ships berth, and the city walls, Stradun and Pile Gate fill fast once the morning buses and shuttles arrive. The port authority allows no more than two ships berthed at once and about 4,000 cruise visitors at a time, so crowds are lower than a decade ago, but the walls still reach peak density between 10:00 and 13:00. Get to the walls early, eat away from Stradun, and treat the bus back to Gruž as the part of the day most likely to go wrong.

When to head back to the ship

For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.

Where people get Dubrovnik wrong: Leaving the bus back to Gruž to the last moment; summer buses fill and traffic stalls.

Docking and getting to town

Under the port's '2+1' arrangement, two ships berth at Gruž and one more may anchor offshore near the Old Town. Passengers from the anchored ship are tendered into the Old Town's old harbour (by Ploče side), a ride of a few minutes. If your ship tenders, you skip the bus entirely but should allow for tender queues on the way back.

Walkable? Partly, about 40 min. You can walk from Gruž to Pile Gate in about 35–45 minutes, mostly along busy roads with traffic and some climbing. It is fine on a cool day if you are fit, but most people take the bus there and save their legs for the walls. Once inside the Old Town everything is on foot; Stradun is flat, but the side streets are steep stairs.

Transport

Return timing

Leave Pile Gate by 15:45 for a 17:30 all-aboard. The bus ride is 15–20 minutes when the road is clear, but in summer the coast road to Gruž backs up and full buses pass the Pile stop. Allow a missed bus, a slow ride and the walk through the port, and you need about 45 minutes. That leaves you on board about an hour before all-aboard, which is where you want to be.

If you are running late: If you are running late, take a taxi from the rank at Pile rather than waiting for a bus. Call the ship's port agent (number on your daily programme) if you will miss all-aboard; ships do not wait for independent passengers, and the next port will be your problem to reach.

Common mistakes

Safety and scams

Dubrovnik is a safe city for visitors. The main risks are heat, dehydration and slips on polished limestone and wall steps, especially in July and August. Carry water on the walls, where there is little shade. Pickpocketing is uncommon but possible in crowds at Pile Gate and on full buses. The Old Town bans wheeled suitcases on its streets and enforces noise limits, which matters only if you are disembarking at the end of a cruise.

Accessibility

Gruž has level access from the ship to the road. Libertas buses can be crowded but Pile is a step-free stop. Inside the Old Town, Stradun and Luža Square are flat and smooth, but most side streets are stepped and Pile Gate has a ramp and some cobbles. The city walls are not wheelchair or pushchair accessible: the route is all steps. The cable car is the easiest way for limited-mobility visitors to see the Old Town from above. If your ship tenders, ask the ship whether wheelchair users can be transferred in that day's sea conditions.

If it rains

Rain turns the walls and Stradun slippery, so swap the walls for the Rector's Palace, the Franciscan Monastery and the Maritime Museum, all covered by the Dubrovnik Pass. The cable car stops in lightning and strong wind, so check before going up.

Crowds

The port authority's 2026 berthing policy caps simultaneous cruise visitors at about 4,000 and allows two ships berthed with one more at anchor. Cruise crowds peak between 09:30 and 13:00 on Stradun and on the walls, and at Pile Gate when shuttles arrive. Start at Ploče rather than Pile, go clockwise from there, and do museums at midday. Lokrum and the cable car are quieter early in the afternoon once tours head back.

Questions cruise passengers ask

Is Dubrovnik cruise port walkable to the Old Town?

It is possible: about 3 km, 35–45 minutes along busy roads. Most people take bus 1A or 1B to Pile Gate, which takes 15–20 minutes.

How do I get from Dubrovnik cruise port to the Old Town?

Take Libertas bus 1A or 1B from outside Gruž port to Pile. Pay €2.50 on board, or €1.73 for a one-hour ticket bought in advance (2026). Taxis and ship shuttles also run.

Is Dubrovnik a tender port?

Usually not. Most ships dock at Gruž. One ship at a time may anchor off the Old Town and tender passengers into the old harbour.

How much are the Dubrovnik city walls?

€40 for adults and €15 for children aged 7–18 in season (2026). The ticket includes Fort Lovrijenac.

Is the Dubrovnik Pass worth it on a cruise day?

Often yes. At €40 for one day (2026) it costs the same as the walls ticket but adds museums and unlimited city buses.

What can I do in Dubrovnik in one day from a cruise ship?

Walls first thing, Stradun and the Rector's Palace, lunch, then the cable car or Lokrum, and back on the bus 75 minutes before all-aboard.

Are there beaches near Dubrovnik cruise port?

Banje Beach is five minutes from Ploče Gate. Lapad Bay is closer to Gruž and easier with children. Lokrum offers rock swimming 15 minutes by boat.

Is Dubrovnik safe for cruise passengers?

Yes. The main risks are heat, slippery stone and missing the ship because of traffic.
