Porto Cruise Port to the City Centre: Metro, Bus or Taxi
Quick answer: Ships dock at Leixões in Matosinhos, not in Porto itself. The Ribeira is about 9.5 km away, so you cannot walk there. The easiest way in is a short walk to Matosinhos Sul and metro line A towards Estádio do Dragão to Trindade, about 25 minutes. You need a €0.60 Andante card loaded with single tickets: €1.40 for Z2 or €1.85 for Z3 (2026). STCP bus 500 takes about 40 minutes along the coast to São Bento. A taxi, Uber or Bolt takes about 15–20 minutes outside rush hour. For a 17:30 all-aboard, leave the Ribeira by 15:15.
Where the cruise ships dock
Porto is not a tender port. Ships dock alongside at Leixões, in the seaside town of Matosinhos at the mouth of the river Leça, not on the Douro. There are two terminals.
Porto Cruise Terminal (South terminal, South Mole). The modern terminal on the south breakwater, at Avenida General Norton de Matos 23, Matosinhos, with a 340 m quay for large ships. It is about 800 m out along the breakwater, and a free port shuttle bus runs between the ship and the exit. From the South Gate, Matosinhos beach is about 5 minutes on foot and Matosinhos Sul metro station is a short, flat walk. The building is wheelchair accessible.
North terminal (Dock 1 North). The older terminal on the north side of the harbour, in Leça da Palmeira, with a 300 m quay for ships up to about 250 m. Cross the bridge over the harbour to Mercado metro station in Matosinhos for line A.
Can you walk from the cruise port to Porto?
No. The Ribeira is about 9.5 km from the South terminal. In Porto, the centre is compact but very hilly, with granite cobbles. São Bento station sits at the top and the Ribeira riverfront at the bottom. Going down to the river is easy. Coming back up is a climb.
Buy an Andante card first
The Andante card is a reusable paper card for occasional travellers on the Metro do Porto and STCP buses. Buy it at the machines in the metro station.
- ·Card: €0.60 for the blue card.
- ·Single tickets: Z2 €1.40, Z3 €1.85 (2026). A single is valid for one hour from first validation, including changes.
- ·24-hour tickets: Z2 €5.15, Z3 €6.65 (2026).
- ·One card each: each person needs their own card. A card can be used by only one person per journey.
- ·Zones: check the zone map at the station before buying, because the price depends on how many zones your journey crosses.
- ·Bonus: load ten singles and you get one free.
Metro line A (blue)
This is the best way into Porto for most cruise passengers. It is cheap, direct and avoids road traffic.
- ·Where to board: Matosinhos Sul from the South terminal, or Mercado from the North terminal.
- ·Direction: line A towards Estádio do Dragão.
- ·Time: about 25 minutes from Matosinhos Sul to Trindade.
- ·Cost: an Andante single, Z2 €1.40 or Z3 €1.85 (2026).
- ·Getting to the old town: Trindade is the central interchange. Change to line D for Aliados and São Bento, or walk downhill through Avenida dos Aliados.
Gotcha: validate every time. There are no turnstiles. Tap your card on the yellow validator on the platform before every journey, including changes. Inspectors fine unvalidated riders.
The metro is wheelchair accessible, and the route from Matosinhos Sul is flat.
STCP bus 500
Bus 500 is slower than the metro but scenic. It follows the Atlantic coast and the north bank of the Douro, past Foz, into the centre near São Bento.
- ·Where to board: on the beachfront road outside the port.
- ·Time: about 40 minutes to São Bento, longer in traffic.
- ·How to pay: tap your Andante card on boarding, or buy a ticket from the driver.
- ·Other lines: STCP buses 502, 506 and 507 also serve the terminal area.
Taxi, Uber or Bolt
Taxis queue outside the South terminal on cruise days, and Uber and Bolt operate in Porto and Matosinhos. The ride to the centre takes about 15–20 minutes outside rush hour.
Fares are metered. Use the meter or an app, and do not accept a fixed price from a street driver. A taxi is also the quickest way back if you are running late.
Cruise line shuttle
Some lines sell a coach shuttle to central Porto. It is not a free port service, and the price varies by line, so check your cruise planner. Check the drop-off point and the last return time.
Options compared
| Option | Cost | Time | Where to board | Best for |

| STCP bus 500 | Andante card, or a ticket from the driver | About 40 min to São Bento, longer in traffic | Beachfront road outside the port | The coastal view, metro disruption |
| Taxi, Uber, Bolt | Metered | About 15–20 min outside rush hour | Outside the South terminal | Running late, limited mobility |
| Cruise line shuttle | Varies by line | Depends on traffic | Check your cruise planner | A booked transfer; check the last return time |

When to head back
The rule for a 17:30 all-aboard: leave the Ribeira or Gaia by 15:15 and be on a line A train at Trindade by 15:45.
The climb or line D ride from the Ribeira to Trindade takes 15–20 minutes. Line A to Matosinhos Sul takes about 25 minutes. Then comes the walk to the gate and the port shuttle along the breakwater. That puts you on board about 16:30, 60 minutes before all-aboard, with slack for a missed train.
| All-aboard | Leave the Ribeira or Gaia by | On a line A train at Trindade by | Leave central Porto by taxi by | Leave Matosinhos beach by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17:00 | 14:45 | 15:15 | 15:40 | 15:55 |
| 17:30 | 15:15 | 15:45 | 16:10 | 16:25 |
| 18:00 | 15:45 | 16:15 | 16:40 | 16:55 |
If you are running late, take a taxi, Uber or Bolt from the centre; the ride is about 15–20 minutes outside rush hour. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late. To work it out for your own ship, plan your day with your own all-aboard time.
Common mistakes
- ·Boarding the metro without validating. There are no gates. Tap your Andante card on the yellow validator before each journey and each change.
- ·Sharing one Andante card. Each card can be used by only one person per journey. Buy one card per traveller.
- ·Leaving the climb back from the Ribeira until the last minute. Allow 15–20 minutes to get from the river to Trindade, uphill or by line D, before the 25-minute ride to Matosinhos.
- ·Accepting a fixed taxi price from a street driver. Use the meter or an app.
- ·Using Euronet cash machines. They add high fees. Use a bank's own cash machine (Multibanco) or pay by card.
